3 wm/avitos lOl isfixed to the ladder H, while its opposit. end carries a balancing weight 2Q, and in this manner the trap door E and the ladder 'l1 are properly balanced for the convenient working` of the saine when the said trap door is opened or closed.
Carried at the inner face of one side rail 12 of the ladder H at the foot end thereof is a catch 21. the saine being pivotally snp- )orte'd and is adapted to engagea keeper plate 22 mounted onthe inner face of the trap door E so that the ladder 'H can be looked against lowering movement on the opening of the trap door until the catch '21 has been released from the plate Q2, whereupon the said ladder H can be extended into the rooin so that a person can ascend the saine for entrance to the attic B from the said rooln A, or 'rice Versa.
It will be apparent that when the trap door E has been closed, the ladder H is projected into the attic and is invisible from the rooin A, and also will be ont of the way so as not to occupy any space therein.

2. The conibination'with a trap doorway and swinging` door therefor, of a ladder movable through the doorway, guide cleats fixed tothe door and engageable with the side rails of the ladder, a railing iXed to the doorway and rising above the plane thereof,
vertical posts rising` haring cnt-away portions for receiving the and forming ahntinents therefor' when the ladder has been extended through opened.y weighted balancing means support-- ed by the nprights and connectedwith the ladder, slotted keeperplates mounted in the inner face of the door` and gravity catches pivotally mounted on the side rails of the ladder for engagement in the keeper plates to look the ladder against sliding movement in the guide cleats on the opening of the door.
