Be it known that I, V'RICHARD G. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bearden, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Miners7 Lamps, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to improvements in miners lamps and has particular application to a combination lamp and cap.
AIn carrying out the present invention, it
is my purpose to provide a combination miners lamp and cap wherein the lamp and cap will be connected to each other in such manner as to present a unitary structure and wherein the connection between the cap and the lamp will be fixed so that accidental disconnection of the parts is eliminated.
It is also my purpose to'provide a device of the class described Vwhich will embody an electric lamp and a cap so constructed and varranged that the device may bereadily and conveniently handled and worn, while derangement of the parts incident to jarring and thelike is avoided.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention'consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling Within ythe scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance ,with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the exible covering of the cap being removed. Fig.. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view through the lamp and connections between the lamp and the frame of the cap, the parts being shown enlarged. .Fig 4 is a transverse sectional view through the lamp structure.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a cap plate of cylindrical outline and having a series of apertures 2 formed therein adjacent tothe periphery thereof, while 3 indicates a series of 'ribs each having one end :fastened in one of the apertures 2 in the cap plate and the opposite end secured to an annular ring-or band 4. The band 4, ribs 3 and the cap plate 1 constitute -a metallic framework for the cap structure and such framework conforms to the contour of the head and is .incased in a cloth covering 5. The band 4 is preferably provided with an outwardly extending peaklike frame 6 covered with suitable-cloth and forming the peak of the cap.
At diametrically opposite points, the cap plate 1 is formed with connecting ears v7, '7
and soldered or otherwisejconnected to such ears and disposed upon the under surface of the cap plate is a cylindrical tube 8 projectlng through the cap structure at the front. and rear thereof'and having the front end suitably connected with a socket 9 carrying a reflector 10 and a-lamp bulb 11 within such retlector.` The rear end of the tube 8 is threaded interiorly to receive a plug 12 connected through the medium of a chain 13 with a but-ton 14 on the upper su'rface of the cap plate, the chain serving to prevent loss ofthe plug when the latter is remove f-romthe tube.
Slidably mounted withinv the tube 8 is a container 15 carryinga battery 16 and provided with a laterally projecting pin 18 working within a slot 19 form'pd in the tube 8, the opposite ends of the slot being arranged at right angles to the center portion thereof as at 20. The forward end of the slidable container 15 is provided with contacts 21 connected with the terminals of the battery 16 and designed to engage the terminals of the lamp socket 9 when the battery and -container aremoved toward the forward end of the tube 8 so as to energize the lamp.
In practice, the parts are assembled as aoA illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 and when theminer desires to illuminate the lampv the pin' 18 is moved from the rear end of the slot 19 toward the front end thereof and disposed ar portion of the slot 19 serving to prevent the breaking of thecircuit.
