UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. NESBITT, 0F' ELOS- ANGELES, CALIFORNA.
v HEEL-CUTTING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 1, 1914.
Application filed April 6, 1914. Serial No'. 830,063.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that 1, VViLLrAM J. Nnsrr'r, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Heel-Cutting Apparatus; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art Ato which it a-ppertains to make and use the same. f
This invention relates to heel cutting apparatus; more particularly to improvements in the heel cutting apparatus disclosed in my applications for patent filed October 4, 1913, and November 28, 1913, Serial Numbers 7 93,476 and 803,616.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construct-ion of the apparatus specified whereby the heel of a shoe may be moved against the saw at the desired angle to the saw.
Further objects are to provide a novel and improved construction for adjusting and moving the heel at an angle to the saw, which 'is simple, easy and convenient to use and effective in action.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent from a careful consideration of the following description of the preferred form of the construction embodying it, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure -1 is a plan view of the apparatus showing the improved construction; Fig. 2 is a similar view, with parts in section and parts in changed position; Fig. 3 is another plan view, with parts omitted and parts in section; Fig. 4 is a partly broken sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. '8; Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the top of the frame; Fig. 6 is a plan view of one of the tables; Fig. 7 is a plan view form; Fig. S is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
The frame of the apparatus has thereon a preferably flat support 10` and the standard 11 which latter extends upwardly above the support 10l at one side of said support.
`ed a platform platform 19 the of the` platwheels 14 and 15 on shafts 16 and 17 which latter are mounted in suitable bearings on the standard 11 and the frame of the apparatus.
On a pivot 18 on the support 10 is mount- 19. Between guide bars 20 hich extend longitudinally of and are suitably secured kto the platform 19 is slidably arranged a table 20 which. latter is provided with guide bars 21 extending transversely and having slidably mounted thereon the table 22 which has a cutaway portion 23 on the underside thereof. Any suitable means may be employed to turn the platform 19 on the pivot 18, that shown consisting of a lever 24 which is mounted on a pivot 25 on the support 10 and has its rear end pivotally connected to a link 26 which is pivotally connected to the platform 19. The forward end portion of the lever 24 is provided witha projection 27 which is adapted to t in any one of notches 28 in the bar 2S on the support 10 to hold the platform 19 in adjusted position. Vhen the platform 19 is parallel to the saw the lever 24 abuts against a stop 29. The means for moving the table 20 on the platform 19 preferably consists of an angular lever 80 which is mounted on a pivot 31 between the projections 32 which extend `downwardly at the sides of a slot 33 in the forward end of the forward end of the table 2O having thereon a projection 34 to which is secured by a strap 35 the bolt 36 which latter passes through a slot 38 in the end portion of the lever 30. The slotted end portion of the lever 30 passes throughand may be moved transversely in an opening 39 in the forward' end portion of the support` 10.
Any suitable orv approved means may be employed for holding and clamping the heel of a shoe in position on the table 22, that shown consisting of a heel rest 40, and a spring-pressed lever 41 having its rear end pivotally mounted on a bifurcated standard 42 on the rear part having thereon a curved blade 43 which is adapted to iit in the hollow between the heel 44 and the insole or upper leather of a shoe 45 so that when the heel is placed on the heel rest the lever 41 may be moved downwardly and held to clamp the heel in position. The lever 41 may have pivotally mounted thereon an angular lever 46 which is adapted to engage the forward part of the heel of a shoe.
of the table 22 and f may be moved to the The table 22 may be moved toward or away from the cutter or saw 13 by swinging lever 47 which is mounted on pivot 4S on an arm 49 suitably secured to the table 20, and which has its rear end pivotally connected with one end of a link 50 which latter extends into the cutaway portion and is pivotally connected with the table 22. The table 22 may be automatically locked in adjusted position by means of a screw 51 which latter is turned, by a spring 52 connected to an arm 53 thereon, to bear against a block 54 resting on the table 20 and thereby raise the table 22 into fric tional engagement with the guide bars 21. The screw 51 may be turned to unlock the table 22 by pressing the handle 55 which is disposed adjacent to the handle 56 of the lever 47 and has thereon a bell crank 57 which latter is pivotally mounted on the lever 47 and operatively connected with the arm 53 by the connecting rod 58.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with my applications for patent above referred to, it will be understood that in use the heel of a shoe having been clamped in position by the means therefor on the table 22, the latter may be adjusted to the desired degree to bring the heel into the path of the cutter or saw 13 by pressing the handle toward the handle 56 of the lever 47 and swinging the latter to the left, when, if it is desired to make an angular or inclined out through the heel, the lever 24 right to turn the platform 19 and consequently the tables 20 and 22 until the heel is disposed at the desired angle to the cutter or saw 13, whereupon the handle 30 of the lever 30 may be pulled upwardly to move the tables 20 and 22 rearwardly and thereby cause movement of the heel past the cutter or saw 13 to cut away a part of the heel.
The form of the construction which has been particularly illustratedand described admits of many minor changes and modifications, wherefore the right is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing' the Commissioner of Patents not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a support, a pivot on the support, a platform mounted on the pivot, means for adjusting the platform on the pivot, a table movable longitudinally on the platform, a second table movable transversely on the first mentioned table, means on the second table for clamping the heel of a shoe, a saw, and means for operating the l'irst mentioned table to move the heel past the saw to cut away a part of the heel.
2. In heel cutting apparatus, the combination of a support, a pivot on the support, a platform mounted on the pivot, a saw, means including a on the support for adjusting the platform angularly to the saw, a table movable longitudinally on the platform, a second table adjustable transversely on the first mentioned table, clamping the heel of a shoe, and means including a lever pivotally mounted on the platform for operating the first mentioned table to move the heel past the saw to cut away a part of the heel.
lever pivotally mounted means on the second table fory Y 3, In heel cutting apparatus, the combi- A nation of a support, a cutter, a platform mounted on the support, means for adjusting the platform angularly to the cutter, adjustable means on the clamping the heel of a shoe, and means including a lever pivotally moimted on the platform for operating the second mentioned means to move the heel against the cutter to cut away a part of the heel.
platform for` The testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, this 31st day of March, A. D. 1914.
