fcan-snar To all whom it may concerm',
Be it known that I, HENRY JWVARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Indiana Harbor, countyyof Lake, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inCarSe'als, of which the following istya specificatiom-and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. I v The invention relates to car seals an more particularlyto those of-the type known as automatic seals. and, comprising a chamberedhead ajnd a'shacklefand provision for securing an end ofthe shackle "within the chamber of the head in such a manner that it cannot be withdrawn without destroying the seal, I
The object of the invention is to provide.
improved means for preventing the insertion of a cutting tool into the chamber of the head along the path-of the shackle and thus opening the seal by severing'the locking instrumentalities; I i I To this end the invention use of abutting transverse shoulders formed upon a wall of the head, and upon the shackle and in order that these shoulders maybe efiective in'preventing the insertion of a cutting tool,,,the invention further contemplates a form 'of locking means constructed to hold the end of theshackle in fixed position within the chamber of {the head.
In the accompanying drawings,'Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional view of a seal embodying the features of improvement provided by, the invention, the parts being shown, in closed position; Fig. I2iis adetail plan View showing a blank of sheetmetal from which the partsof the seal may be tional view taken on the line ei-toffiFig. 1, Fig. 5, is a detail perspective viewshowing the end of the'shackle, and Fig. 6 is aidetail perspective view showing a modified form of an endaof the shackle. I g The seal is conveniently formed from a single piece of sheet metal, as 10; This sheet metal blank may be transversely folded upon thelines 00-40 andy-y to" provide a chambered'head,1 1,a tongue 12 within the chamber of the head and a str'apor shackle 13. When. formed in this way the end 14 of the chambered head 11, is left open for contemplates the the insertion of'the free end 'ofthe strap, 13, when the seal is .to be closed. The margins of the parts, as 15 and 16,-which form the base and cover plates respectivelyof' the cated at 31, 32, Fig.4.
beredfhead 1-1, is depressedfor aport-ionof 'its' length, forming a longitudinal channel,
17. The part. formingthe tongue,f12,' is

similarly depressed toforma channel 18,
which receives the depressed portion 17,0f
the cover. plate 16. The end of the chan- 'v an outwardly facing transverse shoulder," 19, eXtendin'g part way across the chamber of the head. For engagement with this shoulder, a part ofthe strap, 13, adjacent its free end is depressed in the form of a channeledl ortion 18, of the tongue 12, provides tending partway across the strap and abutting against'the transverse shoulder l9 when the end ofthe strap is thru'sti-nto the'cham ber of the head. The side portions 22, 23
of the strap :fit against the under side ofthe tongue 12, at each side ofits channel 18.
:Any convenient means may be employed for locking theend of the strap'within the chamber of the head. Preferablyithis will take the form ofa shoulder, 24, struck up wardly from the floor of the channel, 20,
of the strap, in position for engagement with the end of the tongue, 12. To insure" I the shoulders 19 and=21 being held in contact when the seal is closed, the shoulder 245'is so positioned as to justpass the end ofthe tongue 12, Whenthe shoulder 21,-"comesinto engagement with the shoulder 19. The free tongue and by" sufliciently curving, the
tongue to'cause its end to elastically enter of the "strap. The contacting shoulders 19 and 21 serve to effectually prevent the insertion-of a tool over the strap 13, for rais this pocket until-the insertion of the end I nel 20, the inner end, 21,' of the channel bee-7 mg in the form ofia transverse ShOulder'eX- I neled portion of the strap, insuresthat the engagement of the tongue with the shoulder cannot be disturbed by the insertion of a tool either below or about the sides of the strap. The engagement of the tongue, 12, with the shoulder 24, when the shoulders 19and 21 are in contact firmly holds the end of the strap against longitudinal length as to engage the shoulder, 24, when p the .shoulders, 19 and 21, are exactly in con-. tact, it will be understood that when the seal is to be formed by automatic machinery the parts will be so proportioned aspto permit the shoulder 24 to pass ashort distance be yond the end of the tongue, 12., This is for the purpose of preventing slight differ.
ences in the proportions of the parts which may occur from interferingwith the opera-' tion of the seal.
In order that cutting through the tongue at'the shoulder, 1-9, by the insertion of-a cutting tool above the strap 13, may not serve to open the seal, the margins of the tongue, 12, are preferably.interfolded with the margins of the base and cover plates, 15., 16 of the head. As shown, the tongue,
-12, is provided with lateralprojections, 26, v '27,' and the margins ofthe coverplate 16,
of the head are provided with notches 28 and 29. hen the parts are folded together upon the line w:r, the projections 26 and 27 enter the notches 28 and 29, respectively, and are interfolded with the margins of the floor plate 15-. As the base of the tongue, 12, must be separated from the floor plate 15 of the head a suflicient distance .to permit the shoulder 24 .to pass between these parts, a rib, 80,is preferably struck up from the floor of the channeled portion 20 of the tongue to fill the space between these'parts when the'seal is closed. If desired, this space may be filled by raising the floor of the channel 20 throughout a portion of the length of the channel for its entire width, as indicated at 33 in Fig. 6.
I claim as my invention, 1. In .a car seal, in combination, a chambered head having top and bottom walls and an open end, one of the said walls of the head being longitudinally channeled for a portion of its length only to provide an outwardly facing transverse shoulder extending only part way across the said wall intermediate its ends, a strap adapted-to enter the chamber of the head through its said open end, the strap being channeled to provide a transverse shoulder complementary to the said shoulder on the wall of the head, and a cooperating spring tongue and stop shoulder, one of said parts beingmounted in the chamberof the head beyond the said transverse shoulder on the wall of the head and the other being carried by the tongue and the parts being so proportioned that the spring tongue is operatively engaged with the stop shoulder to hold the shackle against movement when the said two transverse shoulders are in contact.
2. In a 'car seal, in combination, a chamberedhead'having an open end and comprising a base plate and a cover plate having interfolded margins and one of said plates having an outwardly facing transverse shoulder. intermediate its ends, a'shackle adapted to enter the chamber of the head through its said open end and having a transverse shoulder complementary to the said shoulder on one of the plates of the head and an intermediate plate engageable with the shackle to hold the sam'e'within thechamber of the head, the intermediate plate having one ofits margins interfolded with the margins of the said base and cover plates at 'a point beyond the saidtransverse shoulder on oneof the plates of the'head from the said open end of the head.
'3. In a car seal, in combination, a chambered head having an open end, one wall of the head being depressed throughout a portion of its length, a tongue formed integral with the wall of the head and being depressed to form a channel throughout a por tion of its length, ter the head through its openend to engage the tongue, the shackle being of channel shape at the end which enters said head, the depressed portions of the head, tongue and end of the shackle being'of complementary a shackle adapted to en form and nested'together when the endv of itself to form :a chambered head and shackle,
