Be it lmownthatfl', HARRISON L. STALEY, a citizen of the United, States, residing at Martinsville, in the county of Morgan and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Motion-Augmenting Pendulum-Gearing, of which the following is a specification,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to pendulum gear- 111g that is des gned for producing motion,

The primary object of the invention is to provide improvements in motion augment- I ing gearing, especially of the pendulum. .I type, ,to the end that such gearing shall be adaptedto be operated with the minimum bodily movable rotary fgearing for storing energy imparted thereto and giving off the 'energyfor the actuation of other gearing;

lower end portion having also a relatively shorter portion 31 extend ngfrom the ex tension 31 around the end .portion of the journal box. A crank shaft 32 is mounted uprightly in the journal box 30 and extends therethr-ough, the upper end of the shaft having a crank arm 33 thereon provided with a ball shaped crank pin 34, and

nected to a pivotblock 40. A pivot head 41 is secured to the under side of the bottom 2 of thetub and provided with a vertical pivot pin 42 whereby the pivot block 40 is connected to the pivot head. It will be clear from the foregoing that when the lever 20 is rocked on its supporting pivot the 'sha-ft32 ismoved axially toward or from the pivothead 41, but the crank pin 34 is held against movement in that direct on, and consequently'the shaft is caused to rotate and carry the crank pin transversely "in an are about the pivot pin 42, the pivot and pendulum arm in mid position when at rest, and so that the crank arm 33 ex tends:transversely or at quarter position in order that when the lever again is moved, the crank arm not being on dead center must cause rotation of the shaft 32. A suitable gear case. is provided which preferably comprises an appertured plate 46 extending about the extensions on the lower end of the pendulum and suitably secured thereto, the plate having a flange 47 thereon extending downwardly about the gear wheelv 35 and the pinion 44. The pendulum is provided with push bars 48 and 48 which preferablyare cast on or otherwise fixedly connected to they plate 46 of the gear case, to enable the operator to use his feet when in sitting position to assist inoperating the pendulum gearing, by placing the feet upon the push bars.
It should be understood that the pendulum and the gearing may be variously modified indetail and may, be adapted to be used in connection with various types of other gearing. It IS obvious also that the balance wheel may be variously arranged on the pendulum arm as may be most convenient, in order to obtain gyroscopic effect in steadying themotionof the operating lever, especially during the periods when the direction of movement of the lever is reversed.
In practical use the" handle portion 27 of the lever is moved so that the rack bar 23 is given reciprocating movement for op- "erating the shaft 12, the lever atj'thesaine time causing the pendulum arm to swing to and fro so as to cause"rotation of the shaft which in turn'drives the wheels connectedtherewith while the wheels are moved .bodilywiththe pendulum and serve as weighting material, while at the same: time acting, to continuelthe motion, not only over the dead centers ofthe crank, but for a time after having. been manually put in" motion, the gearing therefore enabling the operating lever-to'be easily kept in motion. In washing machine gearing, the com bination with a supporting structure, reciprocatory gearingmounted upon the top of the structure, and an actuating lever pivotally supported on one side of thestructure and operatively connected with the gearing, of motion augmenting pendulum gearing including swinging and also rotatable means movably supported and actuated by the lever to swing under the structure, and means cooperating with the supporting structure andthe gearing for rotating the rotatable means on swinging movement of the swinging means.
24. In washing machine gearing, a swingingly supported pendulum device provided on its free end portion with relatively highspeed rotary motion augmenting and weighting appliances having means connected therewith for rotating the appliances on swinging movement of the pendulum device.
