In a calculating machine, a plurality of wheels each carrying a series of numbers, means for rotating the wheels for bringing the desired numbers thereon to the printing point, a movable frame, a rock shaft mounted therein, a series of pawls mounted on said shaft movable therewith and movable independently thereof to occupy two positions, one in and the other out of engagement with the wheels, cooperating means between said shaft and pawls for limiting the extent of such independent movement, springs tending to retain the pawls at either end of the path of said independent movement, each; of said pawls cooperating with one of said wheels, and being movable therebytoward its disengaged position, means operating on the movement of one of said pawls into disengaged position for correspondingly shifting the pawls associated with the wheels of lower denomination than the wheel lastnamed, and means for moving said frame to shift through the remaining pawls the wheels with which they are associated for bringing blank spaces thereon to the printing point, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
40. In a calculating machine, a shaft, a plurality of wheels mounted thereon and each provided with a plurality of numerical characters, connection between the shaft and the wheels for permitting the rotation of the latter about the shaft for bringing desired characters to the printing line, and for rotating the wheels when unretarded with the shaft in the rotation of the latter, and a total indicating character connected to the shaft for rotation therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
41. In a calculating machine, a shaft, a series of movable recording elements mounted on and movable about the shaft, each element having type representing numerals and the elements being movable about the shaft into numerical positions. an arm mounted .on and movable with the shaft, said arm '4 from numerical positions tor their-normal positions,"substantially as and for :tli'e pur 1 pose specified ,1
