State of New York, have invented new and in Pump-Actuating useful Improvements of which Means for Type-Casting Machines, the "following is a specification:
The present invention relates to improvements in casting mechanism as employed in connection with type casting machines and is particularly applicable to casting mechanisms of the character used in machines of the well known linotype class Heretofore, it has been customary in machines of that class to actuate the plunger oi' the metal pump by a coiled compression spring placed above the pump lever, but experience has shownthat springs of that type are liable to lyuckle unless guiding means is provided to retain the spring" in proper form. it has also been proposed to use tension springs, to actuate the pump, but those springs were not positioned directly above the pump lever Where they would, act with the greatest eiiiciency.
It is the object of the present invention to provide novel spring actuating-means for the pump which embodies a. helical tension spring which will always retain its proper form and is placed directly above the pump lever whereit will act with the greatest efficiency to effect the working strokes of the pump when permitted to do so by the pumpcontrolling cam.
The present invention also provides simple and improved means for connecting the spring to the pump lever whereby the tension of the spring may be adjusted quickly and easily and without displacing the spring, and this connection can be removed it necessary without disturbing the spring.
To this end, the invention consists in certain improvements, and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully desc ibed, the novel features, being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.

The roller 7 on the pump lever is forced against the cam 8 by spring pressure, and the cam is so shaped that it will permit the spring pressure acting on the pump lever to force the pump plunger downwardly to eject a supply of metal from the pump and will lift the nump plunger to produce the return stroke thereof at appropriate intervals.

To adjust the tension of the spring action on the pump, it is only necessary to loosen the lock nut 18 and to turn the rod 15 in an appropriate direction. Also, the rod 15 maybe removed by unscrewing itand witlulrawing it upwardly through the head 13 without disturbing the spring. The

In casting mechanism-of the class described, the combination of a metal pump, a member for operating it, a helical tensi n spring having its lower end figicd directly above said pump-operating member, and a rod connected to the upper end of the spring and extending downwardly through the spring and bearing on said operating member, said rod being removable. while the spring remains in position.

In a machine of the linotyp-e class, the combination of the metal pump lever, the supporting frame or bracket, and an exr landed helicalspring mounted on the supporting frame above the pump lever having its lower end fastened to the frame and having means connecting its upper endto the pump lever, the connectin means passing through the spring Where y a downward pressure is exerted upon the pump lever, and said connecting means being removable. while the spring remains in position.
