Description
W. B. BARNES.
GARMENT.
APPLICIATIOH nun JAN. 23. 1905.
Patented Aug. 25, 1914v j 536% MM in twi -in the manufacture of iii no. no i119 WALTER E. BARNES, 0F BEIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSILWPJR no onion sen-elem l Application filed January To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WAL'inR E. BARNES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairi'ielel, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gern'ients, of which the following is a description, reference being hat]. to the accompanying Grew ing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to on improvement garments, and particularly to a seam for use in the manufacture of ladies shirt waists; night gowns, elder-clown seeks, kimonos, Wrappers and (lill'eren't garments of this nature, in. sewing and binding the sleeves onto the body portion, or in sewing and binding the shoulders or the sides thereof. Heretofore in the ll'HU'HlfHCtUIQ ofsnoh garments a series of i'iperations has been necessary to accomplish the work" of taping the seam, and when the edges of two pieces of fabric have been hound and sewed, an objectionable and bulky and on thin goods an unsightly, seam has resulted.
It is the object of my invention to provide a simple, cheap, strong" and ornamental swim for the piiirpose mentioned, and the invention therefore, consists in the matters hereinafter described and rewrred to in the appended claim.
The invention is illustrated in the soooni panyingr drawings, in which- Figure 1 on exnggerelwl VlGW ot' a portion of a garment shown 5 the shoulrlor seam and the sleeve united. to the garment,
SzllIl garment being turned wrong Fin. 2 a similar View on :1 small illustrating some of the garment, l :1 (-ross section of the seam, Fig. l pm'spoeti\e \lOW of the s:
in these drawings, A rep (shots the onto rial of \\'lll(ll the sleeve of e hillfs shirtwnis-tt is romposetl, it being ru'lllml. as shown at intervals. in the Well known manner to make it lit the sleeve opening.
ll represents the holly of the shirt waist. 'lho'mljnrent raw edges of the material are su iorposml :iml oversennieil joy stitches how in; thi'rz'iils a, covering the edges shove eml holow, and n tape U, herein shown of greater 'wiilth than. the Width of the oversezim is specification of lfistent.
upon the material, and it row of loops 0 pessecl-throngh the same, and the two thielniesses of meter-i2 leaving a portion of the tape exposed .beyoncl the line of stitching, to give neat appearance and strength and suitable hight in the tape for seicl stitches, the overeclge threads lying above the edge.
it will he note l that the loops 5 pass through the superposed parts and terminate at the opp 't" and lower faces the parts By iBiTLlS construction these oops b of needle thread will operate to firmly secure the two superposed parts together, While the loops running to the edge of fabric will cover the edge of the t'ahrie'anol bind the tape about the edge of the fabric.-
l' have provided at seem which be nsecl for connecting various parts of a ger mom, and the raw edges will. he completely covered and the ports firmly seo'nretl to get-her.
'Hziiving' thus described my invention, whet I claim as new enelelesire to secure by Letters Potent, is:--
edge or one of the sorts being si'iperiinposed upon and ei'iineiding with the edge of the other part, e tape open the outer nice and adjacent the (wlgo of one or said-parts, e securing thread extending along the faoe one of said p: ls and having loops eX- tending through the to at a lii-;tnnee irom ti e ease of the unitetl ports s21i l loops terniinaitii substantially at the outer face of the to? s, second thread hav ng loops passing tnroiigl'i the loops in 'oaineil thread and lorking the some, too loops in the second tread l loops in the second thread, the loops of the i lhir l threntl lying on the opposite time of lthe united ports and being looked by the l loops tormerl in the first manned thread. In. testimony Where shin: my siginitnre, I ll? nee o't two Witnesses Wil. l'ill? hill 1? ll A ll till [I Witnesses:
