Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 25, 1914-.
Application filed December 6, 1913. Serial No. 805,104.
has particular application to a device of the class described whereby the motorman of a car may throw the switch point or points to the desired position without descending from the car.
In carrying out the present invention, it
, is my purpose to provide a switch throwing device of the class described which may be rendered active and inactive with ease and facility and which will be maintained in inactive position automatically and within convenient reach of the motorman of the car. I
It is also my purpose to provide a devic of the type set forth which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efliciency and durability and which may be installed and maintained at a minimum expense.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing; Figure 1 is a cross sectional view through a trackway at the switch showing a car approaching the switch and equipped with a switch operating device constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a frag mentary side elevation of a car, the switch throwing device being shown in inactive position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the switch throwing device showing the same on an enlarged scale.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, 1 designates a movable switch point controlling traflic from the main line to a branch line or siding and capable of swinging movement to open the main line to the siding and close the main line so that traffic may continue thereover past the siding.
Each motor car operating over the line is equipped with a switch throwing device constructed in accordance with my present in vention and such device comprises a vertical rod 2 journaled in vertically alining bearings 3, 3 carried by the outer surface of the dashboard of the car. This rod is capable of vertical sliding movement and has the lower end thereof bent at right angles to itself and extended forwardly as at I and thence bent downwardly to form a pointed foot 5 adapted when the rod is moved downwardly to engage the switch point so that the latter may be shifted to the desired position. The upper end of the rod 2 is extended rearwardly a slight distance as at 6 and pivotally connected to the rearwardly projecting end is an appropriate form of handle or operating lever 7. Loosely surrounding the rod 2 and suitably held against verticalmovement is a collar 8 resting upon the upper edge of the dashboard and pivotally connected to pivot ears 9 carried by the collar is one end of a link 10, such link having the opposite end thereof pivotally connected to the handle or operating lever 7 at a point beyond the pivotal connection between the lever and the rearwardly extending end of the vertical rod 2.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. When it is desired to throw the switch point, the operator of the car swings the operating lever or handle 7 upwardly and owing to the collar 8 being held against vertical movement and connected with the handle through the medium of the link 10, the rod 2 moves downwardly and the foot 5 engages the switch point. By moving the handle horizontally the vertical rod 2 is locked within its bearings and the switch point thrown to the desired position. To elevate the rod 2 the handle 7 is depressed and in the continued downward movement of the handle the pivotal connection between the link and the handle passes the connection between the rearwardly projecting end of the rod and the handle so that the rod is maintained elevated.
I claim:
A switch throwing device comprising a vertically movable rod having the upper end thereof bent rearwardly, a foot on the lower end of said rod adapted to engage the switchpoint in the downward movement of said rod, an operating handle pivotally connected to the rearwardly extending end of said rod, a collar surrounding said rod be low the upper end thereof, and a link cen- In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature nect'ion between said collar and handle in presence of two Witnesses. whereby in the downward movement of said handle the rod will be elevated and the link i ELI ANDREWS" 5 thrown by the pivotal connection between I WVitnesses:
