To alt whom may concern;
lie it known that 1, Jumps DORNWPH, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Berlin, Germany, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Matrix-Line Setting and (lasting llilachines, of which the following is a specification.
ln matrix-line setting and casting inachines having matrices guided on wires, the line, after it is cast, is freed from the bur adheringto it at the upper portion carrying the characters, by passing between two. adjustable knives. The holder carrying the knives, is secured to a slide block which is arranged near the casting point coinciding X with the setting point. At this point however there are arrtnged in a very limited space, various other parts, so that this part of the machine is not easily accessible for thevarious manipulations which have tobe effected. When the line is cast, the casting mold holder with the finished line and the casting pot are moved to their originalpd sition. Before however the casting mold holder reaches its initial position, the slide block carrying the knifeholder passes over the partly ejected line still contained in the lasting mold, in order to remove the bur adhering to it. The opening of the casting pot filled with liquid, lead, is, in the advanced position. of theslide block, exactly above it, that the compositor, when Loosening the a screw by means of which the knife holder is f secured to the slide block, is liable to in ure himself by contact with the hot casting pot.
Another disadvantage is that thismethod of securing is very tedious and lei'igthy.
'.l;he invention is intended toobviate these and to enable the knlle the knife holder is not firmly screwed to the slide block as hitherto, but is loosely mounted in a slot or a guide of the slide block and held therein by an easily folding bracket which. is pivotally mounted on the slide block. p
A construction according to this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which, i

Figures 1 and 2 show it respectively in side elevation and plan, Fig. 3 in end elevation seen l l'lllll the left, with the bracket on'litted, and .llig. t shows the arrangement on the machine.
'lhe [mi-lie holder o is mounted on a slide block 5 which is reciprocated inthe known n'ianncr over the type line (Z by an oscillating lever ll: from the main spindlco'l?" the mal lit provided with adjustable knives the upper portion of the type line (Z; Above the knife holder (1,, a set screw 6 is mounted which is introduced into the slot j open in front, oil the slide block 9 In the end or working position of the knife holder (4, a bracket h pivotally mounted onthe slide block 9, is placed around the saidscrew (5, whereby the knife holder at is hold. fast in that position. The bracket 72 is held in the closing position by a spring controlled pin 2' (Fig. 2). lhe compositor there'lf'ore merely has to raise the bracket (Fig. l) with one hand and then the knife holder (15 can be removed easily with the other hand from the slide block g.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. In apparatus for triinn'iingftype lines 1 in matrix line so log and casting machines,
the combination or two knives located one on each. side of: the type line to be trimmed, a holder for said knives, means to reciprocate said holder, and a detachable device to connect the holder to the reciprocating means.
2. ln apparatus for trimming type lines on cachiside oi. the type line to be trimmed,
a holder for said knives, a rod to carry said holder, a hook pivoted to said rod, a promy name in the presence of two subscribing jection on the holder adapted to detaohably Witnesses. engage the hook means to reciprocate said JULIUS DORNETH. rod, ande locking pin in the hook for the v 5 purpose set forth.
In Witness whereof, Ihave hereunto signed \Vitnesses WVOLDEMAR I-Lxmrr, HENRY HAsPER.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,.by addressing the Coinmissioner of Patents.
