CORPORATION OF OEIO, TRUSTEE.
MAGNETO-ARMATURE.
Specification of Letters P2: tent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1914'.
To all whom it may concern p is it kn wn that l, Don; B. llt'ioin-ts. a citizen of the linited Stet-es. residing at New York, in the, county oi hen York and State of New York. have invented a certain new and useful linproveuient in h'lagneto-.s\rimilures. oi" which the tolloiving is a full, clear, and exact descripti-ztn.
This. invention relates to magneto armatures and has tor its objects the provision of an armature which is strong mechanically, and stlieient from electrical and magnetic stand-points: "Wnich enables the use of a form-Wound coil: which is moisture proo'i. I
and proof against injury by coil destruction or? injury due to insulation puncturing and which not diilicult or expensive to manunet-m and assemhlen The shove and other objects are accomplished by 111:? invention which may be briefly summarized consisting in certain novel details of construction and combinalions and arrangements of parts which will he described in the" specification and set forth in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation on a reduced scale of an armature construeted in accordance with my invention;
2 is a longitudinal stantially along the line sectional View, subof Fig. 1; Fig. is a similar sectional View, the section being taken at right angles to the section 0t Fig. l; and Fig. is a transverse sectional View throughthe center of the armature.
The magneto armature constructed in accordance with my invention includes a core 10 formed from a bundle of straight laminae of the same dimensions transversely Erom one end to the other. These laminae are held between side plates 11 by rivets 12, or other suitable means. A form Wound coil 13 is placed about this straight bar of laminae, and thence the coil and all but the ends of core are inclosed Within a nonmagnetic is composed of two parts 14 and li are pro ided respectively "with into ions 1-3 and 16. lhese, two parts of the casing are cupshaped, and are firmly clamped together by screws 17 which may extend through the casing alongside the coil from one end of the casing to the other, as best shown in Figs. 3- and 4-.- The casing is notchedat dianie .rically opposite points, and the ends of the core 10 extend outwardly through the openings thus fornied. In case I l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l the casing is divided at the the core. ooth parts of the casing will he notched. but I do not regard it as essential that the casing be divided alongihe line's which prevent an endu'ise movement of the core relative. to the casing.
Secured to the outside of the casing centrallj with respect to the core, are two tips 13 of steel or other magnetic material, Which have openings shaped to receive. the ends at the core, these tips being are shaped and of a thickness such that the ends of the core are dush with the outer surfaces ot the tips. The tips may be secured to the casing by screws or equivalent means. l ret rahly, the circuniferential lengths of the tips are such that when the armature neutral position. with reference to the field magnets (not shown) these tips will bridge the gaps hetwren the tips of the field poles.
After the parts are assembled, the unoccupied spaces Within the casing are preferahl completely filled with some Water-proof substance or composition which can he forced into the casing through any suitable opening which ma he provided for that purpose.
it is believed to he unnecessary to explain the advantag) further than to say that this construction answers the requirements of av magneto ai'nmturc \ery effectively, and with it the adrantz previously referred to are obtained. Additionally, attention might be called to the fact that there. is no driving stresses transmitted from one part of the casing to the other through the laminated core. Consequently it will he unnecessary that. the laminae be pressed together by hydraulic pressure or other means, as is frequently required in other machines of this character, wherein driving stresses are trans mitted through the laminae. Further, it may be notcdthat economy of space is effected by reason of the fact that the coil occupies practically all of the available space in the casing, the core being formed so that it will center line ot' ends of the side 3 rou ndir arr:
extend well up under the pole tips or conforms to the shape of the casing opposite the pole tips.
Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim is:
l. A magneto armature comprising a tWopart casing 0t non-magnetic material provided w th shaft extensions, a core of laminm extending transrersel across said casing, a
1n coil surrounding the core, and means for lannnng together the two parts of the casing.
2. A magneto arniature comprising a tWopart casing, each partcylindrical in shape l and 1 r0rided with a shaft extension, a core comprising a bundle of laminae extending 1 transversely across the casing and through the Walls thereof at dian'ietrically opposite points, a coil surrounding the core nri hill the casing, and means for clamping together the two parts of the casing.
3. A magneto armature comprising a twopart casing having integral shaft extensions,
a core comprising a bundle of laminae projet-ting! transversely across the casing and tl'irough the Walls thcreot at diametrically f opposite points, means for clan'iping together the 'i 1 parts of the casing, and pole tips on the :terzor oi the casing and surie ends of the core.
t. it rto a rm ature comprising a twopart cit-'1 provided with shalt extensions,
ring a bundle of laminae exl l l l l l l l l tending transversely of the casing" and through the Wall thereof at diametrically opposite points, said core having shoulders or abutments engaging the inner Wall of both parts of the casing, so as to prevent endwise movement of the core relative to the casing, a coil within the casing surrounding the core, and means for clamping t0- ;rether the two, parts of the casing.
5. A magneto armature comprising a tWopart casing of non-magnetic material pr0- vided with integral shaft extensions, :1 core comprising a lnunlle of laminae extending transversely of the casing and through the wall thereof at diametrically opposite points, said core having shoulders or ahutinents e11- ga n'ing the inner wall of both parts of the V r i casing, so as to prevent endwise movement of the core relative to the casing, a coil within the casing surrounding the core, means for clamping together adjacent taces of the two parts oi the casing, and pole tips'o'lf magnetic material secured to the exterior of the casing centrally with respect to the core and having openings through which the ends of the core extendv g In testin'njmy wl'iereot I hereunto ailiz; my signature in the presence oi two Witnesses.
