To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, HARRY M. ANnnnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bil-Well Swabs; and l do declare the following to be I a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v
This invention relates to improvements in oil well swabs,
One objectof the invention is to provide an oil well swab having an improned'construction and arrangement of valve which is disposed at the lower end of the swab and has its stem extending entirely through the body of the swab and provided with means for regulating the opening movement of the valve.
- Another object is to provide a swab oi the character described having an improved construction and arrangement of resilient pack 25 mg rings or sleeves and means for holding the same in position on the swab.
With these and other objects on view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully describedand claimed.

My improved swab comprise: a tubular body or core 1 having an exteriorly threaded upper end and having its lower end. also threaded exteriorly and screwed into the threaded upper end of a passage formed in a lower sleeve supporting disk 2 on the upper end of which is formed an annular upwardly projecting flange 3. I Said passage is reduced at about its midlength and shouldered as at 1 so. that the lower end of the core rests upon the shoulder, and at the lower extremity of the reduced portion of the passage is formed a valve seat 4 to receive a valve hereinafter described. Arranged on the core or body 1 immediately above and in engagement with the flanged upper side of the disk 2 is a lower packing ring or sleeve 5 which may be of any suitable width and which is preferably formed of rubber or similar resilient material. The sleeve 5 has on its lower end a circular boss 6 which fits into the space formed by the flange 3 on the upper end of the disk 2 and on .the upper end of the sleeve 5 is a boss 7 which fits into the space formed by the flanged lower end of an intermediate'disk 8 which is also arranged on the core 1. The disk 8 is also' provided with a flanged upper end with which is engaged a boss 9-on a second or upper packing ring or sleeve 10. The sleeve 10 preferably corresponds in size to the lower sleeve 5 and is also constructed of rubber or similar material. 011 the upper end of the sleeve 10 is a. centrally disposed boss 11 with which is engaged an upper clamping disk 12 having on its lower side an annular flange which forms a space to receive the boss 11 on the upper sleeve or ring. The packing rings or sleeves 5 and 10 have a slightly larger diameter than the disks 2 and 12 arranged above and below the same and the intermediate disk 8, so that the outer sides of thesleeves or ring project a slight distance beyond the outer sides of the disks as shown.
On the threaded upper end of the core or body 1 of the swab is screwed a hollow-head 13 the lower end of which forms a stop between which and the upper disk 12 is arranged a coiled spring 14: the pressure of which is exerted to yieldingly clamp the sleeves or rings 5 and 10 between the disks as will be readily understood. By screwing the head 13 downwardly on the threaded upper end of the core 1 the tension or pressure of the spring may be regulated. The upper portion of the hollow head 13 is preferably of less diameter than the lower portion and in said upper portion are formed a series of radially disposed oil discharging passages 15 through which the oil or other fluid passing upwardly in the tubular core 'or body of the swab is discharged from the head above the swab as will be readily understood. Arranged in the core or body 1 of the swab is a valve stem 16 which is of greater length than the core 1 and extends upwardly through a centrally disposed aperture 17 formed in the upper end of the head 13. This aperture 17 is of a diameter smaller than the diameter of the bore of the core or per end of the stem 16 is threaded and as hereinbofore stated, projects a considerable distance above the upper end of the head 13. On the projecting threaded end of the valve stem is arranged a stop nut which when screwed upwardly or downwardly on the threaded end of the stem will regulate the opening movement of the valve on the lower end of the stem, said stop nut engaging the upper end of the head when the valve stem is lowered and the valve opened and thus limiting the lowering of the stem and the opening of the valve. Also screwed onto the upper threaded end of the valve stem 16 is a. coupling head 20 which may be of any suitable construction and which is provided on its upper end with a tapered threaded nipple 21 onto which is adapted to be screwed the threaded lower end of a cable connecting member by means'of which the swab is connected to its operating cable.
In the operation of my improved swab it will be seen that when the latter is lowered into the well, the valve 18 in the lower end of the core will be automatically opened, thus permitting the oil or other fluid to flow upwardly through the core 1 and into the hollow head 13 from which it is dis charged through the apertures 15 as will be readily understood; As soon as an upward pull is applied to the swab operating cable, the valve 18 will be immediately closed against its seat thereby preventing any of the fluid above the swab from passing back through the core of the swab.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the of the core, said bore of the disk being offset to provide a shoulder for. engagement with the peripheral edge of the core to limit the movement of the-disk thereon, aseries of packing rings and spacing disks loosely applied on the core and supported on the first mentioned disk, a hollow head engaged with the upper threaded end of said core, the upper portion of said head being reduced and provided with a plurality of radial channels, the outer ends thereof terminating in the outer wall of the head and said head also having the upper end thereof provided with a reduced central aperture of srnaller diameter than the diameter ofthe bore of said core, a coil spring encircling the core between the series of packing rings and disks and the hollow head, a stem guided through the core and the aperture in said hollow head, the upper end of said stem being threaded and the lower end thereof provided with a valve head, a coupling head engaged with the upper threaded end of said stem, and means to lock said coupling head in various adjusted positions on the threaded end of the stem.
