To all whom it may concernr Be it known that I, FnAnn W. 01.5%, a citizen or the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful I-n'iprovement in Disappearing Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to disappearing beds wherein the bed stead is pivotally secured to a vertical panel which is in turn pivotally secured within the doorway of a closet, the whole device being adapted to fold Within a comparatively small compass and to swing inside of the closet so as to be out of the way and out of sight when the bed is not in use, and the objects of my invention are first, to provide an improved disappearing bed which shall be simple of construction and operatirm: second, to provide a device of the character described which is balanced so that it will not. be necemary for the operator to lift the entire weight of the bed when told 'ing; third, to provide improved means for automatically folding the head of the bed when the bedstead is raised; provide, legs for the foot of will automatically fold when and fourtlnto the bed which the bed is tolded and automatically drop into position and rigidly engage the foot of the bed and form a rigid support therefor. ' propose to provide an improved disappearing bed which shall be easily manipulated and "folded into a conumratively small compass so that the same may be easily turned into a closet when not in use and one which will provide a substantial bed when extended horizontally. Also, a bed of the character described which will not told when in use.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to designate a vertical rod pivotally secured within the doorway of a closet and having lateral or horizontal arms 2 to which is pi votally secured a vertical panel 3. The lower portion of the panel 3 is provided with the brackets 4. The bedstead 5 is provided with lateral members 5 which are pivotally secured to the upper ends of the brackets 4 as at 6. The bed 5 is also provided with the folding head 7 which is maintained in substantially a vertical position at. all times by means of the connection 8 which is pivotally secured to the central top portion of the fol-"ling head 7 and to the panel 3 as at 9. The bed :3 is also provided with the usual foot portion 10 which rests against a suitable bumper 11 secured to the upper portion of the panel The foot portions 10 are provided with slots 12 and pins 14. A slot 15 within the extension 16 of the leg 17 engages the pin 14 ot' the foot it) in such a manner that the. leg 17 depends from the said pin 14 when the bed is an upright position as indicated in Fig". 5, the said extension 16 resting within the slot 12 while in this position.

As the bed 5 is lowered, the le 17 will automatically swing on the pin 14 until the lower end of the said leg 17 touches the floor. when its progress is arrested. As the foot 10 ofthe bed continues its downward movement, the extension 16 enters the interior of the foot 10 until the lower end of the said foot 10 rests on the upper end of the leg 17. which movement is permitted by means of the slot 15 which engages the pin 14. In this manner the extension 16 of the log 17 is held by the foot 10 and a rigid support is provided for the foot end of the bed It is obvious from the foregoing that I have. provided means which will automaticallv drop into place, and support the foot of the bed when the same is lowered to a 1 horizontal position and will automatically fold when the bed is folded or raised into an ur right position.

Counter weights 18 are secured to the head of the bed and at each side of the panel 3 so that as the bed is lowered into position the said counter weights pass on each side of the said panel and do not interfere with the proper operation of the bed. The counter eights are provided so as to counter balance the bed tosuchan extent that the same may be readily and easily lowered without lifting the full weight of the bed. In raising the bed 5 to an upright position, the foot 10 is raised until the top end thereof rests against the bumper 11 at the top of the panel 3, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and in full lines in Figs. 2 and 6 of the drawings. While in this position the bed may be swung on'the pivots on the ends of the arms 2 through an arc of 90 de rees until the bed assumes a position at rig t angles to its first A position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6. The bed is held in this plane and swung into the closet by means of the arms 2 operating on the pivots of the vertical rod 1 as shown by the curved line in Fig. 6 which has the pivot 1 for its center until the bed is entirely within the closet when it may be swung into the position B as indicated'in dotted lines in the said Fig. 6. By reversing the operation the bed will be brought into a position ready for use and the legs 17 will be attracted by gravity until they rest upon the floor when the continued downward movement of the said bed will cause the extensions 16 of the legs 17 to'enter the foot 10 and provide a rigid support as hereinbefore described. 7

It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a disappearing bed that may be easily folded within a comparatively small compass. and swungthrough the door of the closet provided for its reception.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A disappearing bed comprising a panel pivotally secured within the doorway of a closet; a bedstead pivotally secured to the panel; a folding head pivotally secured to the bed: means for maintaining the head of the bed in substantially a vertical position means for counterbalanciug the bed; and automatic means for providing rigid supports for the foot of the bed.

pivotally secured in a vertical position within the doorway of a closet; a panel pivotally secured to the rod by means of vertical pivots; a bed pivotally secured to the lower end of the panel by means of horizontal pivots; a folding. head pivotally secured to the bed; means operatively connected to the head and to the panel and adapted to maintain the head in substantially a vertical position; means for counterbalancing the bed; and automatic means for providing a rigid support for the foot of the bed when the same is lowered to a horizontal position.

A disappearing bed comprising a vertical rod rotatably secured within the doorway of a closet and having horizontal arms secured thereto; a vertical panel pivotally secured to the ends of the arms; suitable brackets secured to the lower end of the panel; a suitable bumper secured tothe upper end of the panel;-'a bedstead pivotally secured to the ends of the brackets and adapted to support the head end of the bed;

a folding heachpivotally secured to the bed; a suitable connection pivotally secured to the folding head and to the panel and adapted to maintain the said folding head in substantially a vertical position; counterweights secured to the head of the bed; and legs pivotally .secured to the bed and adapted to support the foot thereof when the same is lowered to a horizontal. position.
