citizen of the United States. residing at Grand Rapids, hiliohigan, have invented certain new and nset'nl Improvements in Item- Counters for Calcnlating-Machines, of which' the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to iminoyements in item Counters for calculating 11iachine:-. and an object is to provide an item counter on any standard style of ealenlai machine by setting aside, as desired. ce1- tain recording dials and their actuating means for the purpose.
A further object is to provide means whereby a eonnter section may be thrown in 0r out of operative engagement Withont disturbing the readingI on said dials.
'Further objects, and objects pertaining to details and economies of construction and operation will definitely appear from the dctailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means-described .in the. following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

ln a mechanism of-this sort, each dial lends to rotate at each stroke of the handle one space morethan the number of spaces indicated by the depressed finger key corresponding to said dial. This is normally prevented by means of a. stop which limits the rotation of the dial to the nnmberoi" spaces yre])resented hy the'Cooperatingr depressed linger key. It ,is an object oi" my invention to overcome a diliicnlty in such a structure. If the counter be made operative when the machine is normal, one extra '1 will be registered on the counting dial by reason of throwing: ont the normal stop. n

My invention may be applied to any member having a reciprocating movement in synchrony with the handle, but l ind it convenient in this instance, to coperate with the part 14. The connections back to the shaft 6 maybe traced through the connect ing parts 18, 12, 11, 10, 9 and.8, all of which are fully described in my said patent.
The keys and their connections and stops and the actuating handle, and the variousv means making up such a machine are here illustrated, but not particularly described.

15 is a lever with an arm extending through a slot 14 in the link 1% During every movement of the handle 7, link i1 moves toward the rear ot the machine and the forward portion of its slot 14: contacts with the lever 15, causing the latter to swing on the vertical pivot 16 against the tension of the spring 17 provided to hold the same in normal positionu A support 21is provided for the lever 15 and pivot or fulorum 16 and is secured to the side of the case. At the other extremity of the lever 15 is the sliding member 18 adaptedv to slide under the shouldered rivet 20. One end of this slide 18 is bifurcated to guide it and keep its position on the lever 15. Extending from slide 18 is an ear 25 which is adapted to be -rec eived by the bifurcated end of 19 18 is a portion of 18 which adapted to strike 3 when in operative position at each movement of the handle; hence movement of the link lll. Extending through the keyboard of the machine is the item counter switch finger piece 22 and connecting parts to the switch 19.

When the ringer piece is normal, as shown in Fig. l, 18 misses 3 during each handle movement. When the linger piece is moved to the left, then 18 falls behind 3, and whenv 1&1 strikes 15, 3 is forced toward the front of the machine, thus givingits coperating dial a transfer movement of one space. Thus it will be readily enden stood that a movement of 18 back and forth, actuated by 22 as described,"will in no way affect 3 assuming that the operating handle is in normal position, and that it is-the movement of this handle which trips the transfer stop.
This item counter switch and finger piece may be placed anywhere on the keyboard, but l have chosen to place it between the second and third column from the left, thus making the last two dials counters, which record every handle stroke.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Fatent is:
1. ln` a calculating machine having handle operating mechanism, dial mechanism with transfer devices, the combination of movable transfer stops; dial actuating reciprocating members normally arrested by said stops, a leverpivotally mounted adjacent to one oi said movable transfer stops; contact connection between said lever' and said handle operating mechanism; a spring for returning said lever to normal position; a sliding, tripping member carried by one end cts-aid lever adapted to slide inand out oi Contact relation with movable transfer stop; a switch1 member adapted to contact with said slid tripping member; a linger piece on the keyboard of said adding machine andsuitable connections between said finger piece and said switching member, substantially as described.
2. ln a calculating machine having a keyboard and handle operating mechanism, and dial mechanism with transfer devices, the combination of movable transfer stops; dial actuating reciprocating members normally arrested by said stops; a lever pivotally mounted in said calculating machine; connections between said lever and said handle operating mechanism; a movable tripping member carried-by one extremity of said lever, and adapted to move in and out of operative relation to said movable transfer stop; a switching member connected to said movable tripping m'ember; a linger piece on the key-board of said 'adding machine and suitable connections between said finger piece an" switching member. substantially as c.
3. In a calculating machine having a keyboard and handle operating mechanism, the combination of movable transfer stops; dial actuating reciprocating members normally arrested by said stops; a lever pivotally mounted in said calculating machine; connections between said lever and said handle operating mechanism; a movable tripping member carried by said lever normally out -of operative position with reference to said movable transfer stops; and means connected to the keyboard of said calculating machine for throwing said tripping mem ber into operative position with reference to one of said movable stops, substantially as described.
4. In a. calculating machinehaving handle operating means and dial mechanism f with transfer means, the lcombination of movable transfer stops; dial actuating reciprocating members normally arrested by said stops; a movable member normally out of engaging relation With said transfer 'stops' actuating connection between said movable member' and said handle operating mea-ns; and means connected to the keyboard of said calculating machine for lthrowing said movable member into engagsubstantially as described.
