Be it known that I, CARL H. KADIE, a citizen oi' the United States, and a resident ot Strasburg, in, the county of Shenandoah and State of Virginia, have made certain newand useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, et which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to vcar couplings of the general type known as Master Car Builders automatic couplings, the general purpose oi which is to reduce to a minimum the dangers peculiar to the coupling of cars and also to save time in coupling.` This is accomplished by rendering the coupling more efficient, reliable, safer and more convenientto operate and to obviate the necessity of train men going between the cars for the purpose of coupling and uncoupling same. f
My invention comprehends a number et improvements in car couplers of this kind, and among the objects sought tobe obtained by these improvements are the following: I. To render the throw or outward swing oi the knuckle completeand positive; that is to insure :that the knuckle, when the lock pin is raised or moved upward willy always swing to a predetermined outer limit. II. To prevent the complete removal of the lock pin 'from its mountings and in so doing to prevent eXcessive travel of the knuckle when thrown open by movement of the pin. III. To support the lock pin in an elevated position, when once raised thereto, until the knuckle isconipletely closed and locked by the dropping' of the pin. IV. To preventthc lock pin, when in its lowermost position,
trom creeping upward in consequence of draw strains upon the knuckle or of slight movement of the knuckle and parts associated therewith while the coupling is in action. V. To insure the complete closure of the knuckle independently ofthe pressure upon its-outer face when a mating knuckle or analogous coupling` member is thrust into the coupling head for the purpose of connecting two pieces or rolling stock together. These objects and others are attained by my invention, as hereinafter more particularly pointed out.
Reference is made to the drawing forming a part of this speciiication, and in which like characters indicate like parts.
Figure -1 is a plan view of my improved coupling, one of the movable knuckles of which is here shown as being closed independently of the pressure upon its outer face. Fig'. 2 is a substantially central hori- Zontal section through one of the draw heads, showing the movable knuckle as open or swung outwardly to its limit of travel. Fig. 3 is a section somewhat similar to Fig'. 2 but showing the knuckle as closed or swung inwardly to its limit ot' travel. Fig'. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of one of the draw bars, certain parts being broken away so as to show how the lock pin is supported in an elevated position except when the knuckle is completely closed. Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line L-4 of Fig. 3 looking in the direction of the arrows. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the movable knuckle, together with the locking pin for controlling' said knuckle. Fig. 6 is a detail view showing in perspective the locking pin. Fig. is a detail showing in perspective the lower portion of the locking pin and also showing fragmentarily the cam controllable by movement of the locking pin, for actuating the movable knuckle.

One side of the longitudinal center of each draw bar is provided with an elongated pocket or way 9 closed at its rear end and movably fitted into this pocket or way is a movable guard arm 10 which may be of the usual or any desired construction. rIhis movable guard arm is provided with a stem 11 which extends through a cylindrical bearing 12 and encircling the stem is a spiral spring 13 abutting at one end against the cylindrical bearing 12 and at its opposite end against the adjacent portion of the movable guard arm 10. The movable guard arm 10 is provided with a shoulder 111 adapted to fit neatly against the locking pin as hereinafter described.
A movable knuckle 15 is journalednupon a knuckle pin 16, this pin extending through a hole 17, with which the knuckle is provided as may be understood from Fig. 5. rFhe knuckle 15 is provided with a tail 18, this tail having a portion 20 of arcuate form and being integral withthe knuckle. The tail 18 is further provided with a lug 19 integral with it, the upper face ofthis lug being inclined as indicated in Fig. et.
