UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EVERITT CATHEY, OF NEW EDINBURG, ARKANSAS.
NUT-LO CK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Evnnrr'r CATHEY, a citizen of the United States, resident of New Edinburg, in the county of Cleveland and State of Arkansas, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Nut-Locks; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention as applied. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 -2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail face view of one of the caps or adjustable locking devices. Fig. 1 is a detail face View of the coupling plate.
The invention has relation to nut locks, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention in application to a railway rail joint, the numeral 2, indicates the end of a rail; 3, a fish plate or coupling plate; and 5, a locking device receiving the bolt end and nut.
The coupling or fish plate is provided with a number of bolt holes Leach being surrounded by a number, usually four, of small holes 8, at equal distances radially from the center of the bolt hole. Through these small holes are passed, from the inner side of the coupling plate outward, a plurality of pins 9, usually two in number, of wrought iron or other flexible metal. The inner ends of the pins are headed to engage the plate 3, which should be countersunk to receive the heads.
The nut 1, on the end of the bolt, having been turned to proper place with relation to the base plate, or the coupling plate, and being in position for locking, the adjustable locking device or plate 5, is applied. This device consists of a circular plate having a central rounded portion 14:, and a concentric circumscribing flange 15, projecting from its front or outer end. Through the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 23, 1913.

Serial No. 796,908.
central. portion of the plate is a central opening 16, which is of angular contour to engage the nut. The flange 15, of this device, is provided with a circular series of small holes 17 which are adjacent to the cylinder or wall of the rear portion 14, and at the same distance from the axial center of the device, as are the holes 8, from the center of the bolt holes in the plate 3.
As the portion 1 1, of the locking plate, is of less diameter than that of the series of holes 17, its cylinder wall being adjacent to their margins, the pins 9, of the coupling plate, are exposed around this portion, and by means of a slight circular adjustment of the plate, are passed through two of these holes 17. In this adjustment the cylindrical wall of this portion is a guide for the pins, and the circumferential channel or recess in rear of the flange facilitates any slight movement of the pins that may be required. These headed pins are of suflicient length to extend outward along portion 14, and to project outward beyond the surface of the flange, and are designed to be turned down thereon, in such wise as to lock the cap in position on the nut. In case readjustment is required, the pins can be straightened and the locking cap removed.
I claim:
In a nut-lock, a locking plate having a circular front flange and a concentric cylindrical portion of less diameter, projecting in.
rear, said plate being provided with a central angular opening for the nut extending.
through said cylindrical portion, and said flange having a series of small holes circumferentlally arranged around and ad acent to said cylindrical portion, a base plate having a bolt hole, and locking pins engaging the base plate, exposed along the cylindrical portions of the locking plate and passing through holes of said flange.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
