CONTROLLING APPARATUS FOR SE1VAGE-DISPOSAL PLANTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 24, 1913.
Patented Aug. 18,1914:
Serial No. 791,502.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, AUoUs'r IleLLMU'rIr and SEBASTIAN lrlAuLBnoK, citizens of Germany and the United States, respectively, and residents of West Hoboken, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have jointly invented a new and useful Controlling Apparatus for Sewage-Dis )0sal Plants, of which the follmving is a specification.
This invention relates to a device of novel construction, designed more particularly to normally lead the sewage into depositing troughs of suitable construction, while upon an excessive flooding of the sewer, the sow age is cut off from such troughs and caused to run off unhindered. As soon as the normal liquid level in the sewer has been reestablished the sewage is again automatically admitted to the troughs.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a sectional plan of a sewage controlling apparatus embodying our invention; Fig. 2 a cross section on line 7-7, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a vertical section on line 8-8, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a section on line 9-9, Fig, 1, and Fig. a detail of the gate guiding means.
It is preferred to arrange one of a pair of depositing troughs A at each side of the main sewer 39 near the discharge end thereof. Across the sewer extends a weir 40 in front of which branches 4L1 lead from the sewer to the troughs, and through which, under normal conditions, the sewage is by the weir diverted into said troughs. Each branch i1 is controlled by a gate 42 guided by rollers 43 along upright tapering rails 414:. Gate 41-2 is by rope 4L5 running over idler-s 416 connected to a pocket l7 having a perforated bottom 48, and adapted to be cl'larged with the sewage from a spout 49 40 whenever the water rises to a level above the top of the weir. In this way, the pocket l7 will be filled with water until it overbal ances gate 42 and causes the same to close its branch 41.
Thus in case of an excessive rail fall and a consequent flooding of the sewer, the water is excluded from troughs A and caused to run oil' direct] y over the weir. Upon a subsequent decrease of the water level, the water 50 will cease to be discharged into pockets 47 and the latter will become emptied through their perforated bottoms, until the gates again overbalance the pockets and will thus open.
WVe claim:
A device of the character described, comprising a sewer, a sludge trough, a branch intermediate sewer and trough, a weir within the sewer at a point beyond the branch, 60 a gate controlling said branch, a perforated pocket operatively connected to the gate, and means for discharging the sewage from the sewer into said pocket.
