Description

H, L. EGGLESTON.
ROAD DRBSSER.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914 To all whom it may concern HARVEY L. EGGLESTON, 0F TULABE, CALIFORNIA.
RoAD-DREssEB.
Specication of Letters Patent. i
Patented Aug. 18, 1914.'
Y Application filed June 23, 1913. Serial No. 7275.212.
Beit known that I, HARVEY L. Eccnns'ro'N, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Tulare, in the county of Tulare, Sta-te of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Dressers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying,r drawingsI and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
his invention relates to improvements in road treating implements and particu larly to a road dresserA adapted to be.used
to scarify the road, level and roll it, all in one continuous ope-ration.
The invention also involvesa series of adjustments for the -scarifying and leveling means and also a coperating structure .be-
tween the two, all for the purpose of per- 'mitting the implement to do fine work upon 30 'such structure and relative arrangement of the road surface.
A further object ofthe invention is tov produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which. itis designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of the parts as will fully appear by aperusal .7 of the following specification and claim.
On the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views. l
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device. F igfQ is a iop plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a detached view of a spring adjustment means. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a swiveled Abearing for a threaded adjusting rod.
Referring now more particularly. t-o the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the main suspending beams for the platforms of the device, such beams each being provided with a front platform 2 and a rear platform 3 or such other platforms as maybe desired. The forward part of the members 1 are suspended upon wheels L1 being suitably provided wit-h a fifth wheel or other similar turning mechanism The rear end of the device is suite lly supported by brackets 6 mounted on a oller 7 of suitable size and weight to roll the road surface after it has been scarified and leveled as will appear.
The numeral 8 designates a. scarifying device of the type shown in my APatent No. 969,850 und dated Septembeu 13th, 1910, hence no specific Adescription of the same will be hereentered into. In my improved device this scarifier is suspended .on four upright members 9 provided with gear racks 10 engaging gears 11 on shafts 12, each shaft having a pinion 13 engaging a worm gear on ahorizontal shaft 15 provided with an operating wheel 16 disposed Within reach of a seat 17 on the rear platform 3 or at other suitable location. Hence, by the operation of the wheel 1G, the scarifying device may be raised or lowered to adjust it at theproper height to do the desired quality of work. In order to permit the searifier to compensate for unusual yunevcnncss in the road surface, I provideithe following resilient means, namely: On the lower ends of the members 9 are pins 18 projecting in a movable manner through plates 19 secured to the scarifier, said pins having heads 20 engaging the underside of said plates 19 to suspend said plates and incidentally thescarifier thereon. At a spaced distance from the plates 19 I provide collars- 21 and interposc springs 22 between said collars 21 andsaid plates 19. By means of this struct 1re, lthe scarifierl may move slightly up and down on the pins 18 against the resistance of' the springs'22 which will allow them to ride over unusual rough places in the road and vthen resume their normal position with the tension of the springs 22.
Hinged to the rear of the scarier 8 is a frame 23 pivotally mounted on which, as at 24, is a downwardly. projecting leveling beam 25 extending from-side to side of the frame 23. This beam 25 is provided with a quadrant 26 having an adjustment wheel operated set screw 27 whereby the beam 25 v may be turnel to any angle desired and then fixed in that position by means of the wheel 27. The frame 23 and incidentally the beam 25 is adjustable vertically by means of a pin 27 connected therewith and projecting `105 through a swiveled bearing 28 and provided on its upper end with an operating wheel 29, said pin 27 being threaded at 30 to be screw mounted through the bearing 28. The member 27 has atits lower end, as atl,
n connection similar to the connection 18 to 22 on the members 9 and for a similar fune tion. The purpose of the Swiveled bearing 2 is to compensate forthe hinged swinging movement of the frame on the scarilier 8. ln operation the 4seerifier 8 scailies the road, the level beam 25 levels it and the roller 26 rolls it,' all in one continuous operation from which it Will be apparent that the implement provides e very eilicient means for the treat-ment of road surfaces.
The numeral 32 designates hinged scrapers bearingr against the top of the roller 7 and held in such position by Weights 33 lfor the purpose of keeping the roller free of dirt, mud, etc. Y
From the foregoing'description it 'will be readily seenthat lhave produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
AWhile this speciieetion sets forth in deu tail the ,present and preferred eonsrucion A of the device, still in practice, such deviel tions from such det-ail may be resorted te as do not form ey departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what'. l claim new and useful and desire to secure by lief-ters Patent ist- The combination with a, wheel mounted frame having escarier and a roller mounted thereon in spaced relation of eleveling frame disposed between said scarier and said roller and hinged to said searii'er, e bearing snfivelly rmounted on said Wheel mounted frame, a vertical rod screw mounted through seid bearing and connected with said leveling frame, -amd an operating; Wheel on sind roth as described.
ln testnnony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
