F. C. GRIMM. SANITARY LOOKING BOTTLE HOLDER. APPLIOATION rum rm.7,.1o14.

FRANK C. GRIMM, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
SANITARY LOCKING BOTTLE-HOLDER.
Specification. of Letters Patent.
Patented Angie, 1914.
Application filed February 7, 1914. Serial No. 817,122.'
To all whom it may conce/m Be it known that 4I, FRANK C. GRIMM, a citizen ot' the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county ot Cuyahoga, and State ot` Ohio, have invented a new and useful Ylininovernent in Sanitary Locking llott-le-l'lolders, ofwhioh the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I `have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present invention relates to a holder adapted to receive bottles and the like and to prevent unauthorized removal ot' the same. A device 0i' this sort is quite gein erally needed in cities, where the loss by theft of milk usually deposited on doorsteps, porches and similar places has reached considerable proportions, and the present device intended as a simple and effective check against any such' unlawful removal oi bottles o-r similar articles.
.l`o,the accomplishment oi these and related ends said invention then consists ot the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
vThe annexed drawings and the following' description set forth in detail certain mechl anism embodying' the invention, such dis-ll closed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the, principle ot' the invention may be used. i Figure l is a view in perspective of' my y l l l device; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with the cover plate of the bracket removed; Fig'. Irl is a section on the line 5l-tl in Fig'. 2; and Fig. il is a plan view indicatingthe method by which the device may be enlarged to take 'are ot a greater number ot' bottles.
ln Fig'. l there is shown a hollow bracket e 1 formed ot' a bottom portion .2 and a rev movable cover plate il. This bracket is adapted to be attached by any suitablemeans to the side of a house or the side of steps or the like in a horizontal position. The bracket is provided with'- three spaced tongues 4f, 5, and (i, thus proyidinp; between such tongues two recesses 7 and S which are formed preferably semi-circular and are adapted to receive the neck of the standard form ot' milk bottle. `Pivotally attached to the central tongue 5 is a retaining membc: l
9 which is provided with two diver-gently extending,r arms l0 and 1l, each of such arms being formed to cooperate with the ,nearest adjacent recess in the bracket to hold therebetween a milk bottle as stated. lt will be understood that the precise form of the reis unimportant, it being;- only necessary that the recess and the adjacent arm be t'ormed to cooperatively provide an openingr adapted to receive the neck of a bottle and prevent the bottle 'from disengagement while the arln is in its cooperative position.
The arms are provided at their extremity with latch members l2 and l5 respectively adapted to be resiliently and automatically engaged by lockingr lugs 1B and lll attached Ito resilient metal strips lsland 1.7 suitably mounted in the tongues tand 6. 'lhese locking members l.-l and 1T are rendered iuoperative by means of two slidably mounted plates lh and it) which are inclosed in the bracket, the plate .lo normally extending' into the recess h and the plate 19 similarly extending: into theI recess 7. These two plates are maintained in such normal position by means olf springs 20 and .l suitably mounted in the bracket. Movement oi the plate lt) is normally prevented by means ot' a pivoted locking lug' 2; which engages in a slot or recess 23 Alormed in the top ot' such plate, being maintained therein by means of a spring This lock s rendered inoperative only when a key is inserted in the key-hole '25 'formed in the upper surface oft the bracket and turned, thus swingriincr the lu; 22 ont ol' the recess .'l. spring` l is attached to the bracketY and to the retaining' member il and is adapted to normally position the latter, as shown in Fic'. Any
suitable lock may be provided ior this purpose as a combination lock may serve equally well although in ,general a lock ol" the present type will be sullicient. \ny suits able number o'lE tumblers may he used instead ot but one (the lug '22) as here illuslratcd.`
ln operation` an empty bottle will be placed in the recess T, the bottle beingV preterably inverted, where it will be held by the.,
arm 10. the retaining' member being' in position shown in Fig'. l. lVhen the milkman brings a full bottle he forces the same into therecess o. thus displacing' the plate 1S to the `'left` and releasing' the locking' lucV lil from the latch l2. rl`he sprincr 2G thereupon throws the retaining' member into its other position, thus locking the l'ull bottle into the, recess The 'full bottle can then be removed from the recess S by first inserting,r
feg.' in the keyhole and releasing the "o .'lo.
by the hand until 'this plate is dis- 1 toward the right, thus causing the .locking lue; 'i6 viirom the latch illustrated .a construction be used when more than one e held a time. The arms 30 are double, each being adapted with tiro recesses 3l in the t will. be understood that more 'than 'two recesses may be 'provided on either side off the cante of the bracket if desired although, in any case, but one set of locking means will probably be provided and these obviously be most lconveniently disposed in the two center recesses and on the cooperating; portions of the two arms.
liormer devices designed for similar purposes have been. complicated in construction, involving' the use of complete inclosures for the bottles, such as bones, cabinets and the like, Without giving es much actual security against theft as the present device'. The latter is very simple and compact, provides a secure means for holdingone or more bot tles, and is convenient to operate.
leither modesoi applying the principle of mv invention ma be em lo ed instead 'of the one exolained chanO-e bein@ made as p orided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such .elated means be employed.
