Y neat, elicient but cheap and simple device for the vending of articles, more particularly small boxes of matches.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

In the drawingsfl indicates a hollow base having coin pockets- 11, l1 separated by a pedestal 12 having a transverse coin groove 13 in its upper end.

Erected from the base 10 is a reservoir 14 provided with two storage compartments 15, 15 which are defined by the outer walls 16, 16 andthe intermediate wall 17 all of which, at their lower ends, terminate in a plane some distance above the base so as to form a transverse passageway or pocket in which is mounted a slide 18. The slide 18 comprises a' main bottom plate provided at its middle with a raised platform 19, the width of which is greater than half the width of one of the storage compartments. At each end of the main bottom plate of the slide is erected a guard flange 20 and along one side is a wall 21 which connects the anges 20 with the platform 19 and thus forms two delivery recesses 22, 22 each having an open end which, in the present em bodiment of my invention, opensv rearwardly. The storage- compartments 15, 15 are closed by means of a removable back plate 23 which is conveniently perforated in order that the articles within the storage compartments may be readily viewed and this back plate near its lower end is provided with side notches 24, 24 which are in alinement with the delivery pockets 22, 22

but are so proportioned that only one of the delivery pockets may fully register with an adjacent notch 2i at one time. lower end of plate 23 is projected down-v wardly behind lugs 26, 26 carried by the base 10 and the upper end of plate 23 is perforated to receive a perforated ear 27 carried by the casing 14 and arranged to reeeive a suitable lock 28.

In order to carry the delivery slide fully to either of its delivery positions, I provide said slide with two downwardly projecting pins `30, 30. In the base I arrange two upwardly projecting standards 31, 31 to the upper end 0f each of which is pivoted a lever 32. The two levers are arranged to -operateupon the opposite sides of the two pins 30, 30 and are provided with a surface 34 which, when the lever is swung to the relative position shown at the left of Fig. 6 engages the adjacent pin 30 at such angle as to have no shifting effect upon the slide but, when the slide has been moved materially in the direction toward its next delivery position, the adjacent pin 30 will be carried beyond the surface 34 and into con tactl with an adjacent portion of the lever the angle of which is such as to have a stron driving effect upon the slide to drive it to 1ts full delivery position.

By removing the cover plate'23, the storage compartments 15 may be filled with the articles to be delivered, such, for instance, as the small match boxes 35, said articles having a vertical height a trifle less than the distance between the upper face of the bottom plate of the slide 18 and the lower ends of the partitions 16 and 17 and a little greater than the height of platform 19 above the upper face of the bottom plate of the slide. The slide 18 is of such length that, in its two extreme positions its end walls 20 wlll alternately register, or substantially register, with the side walls 16 of the storage compartments and only one of the del1very recesses will ever be fully exposed opposite the notches 24. 4

.If it is desired t0 prevent actuation of the slide 18 except upon deposit of the proper coin, the slide 18 is provided at its front with a horizontal fiange 39 through which extend two coin slots 110 which may be brought into alternate registry above the coin slot 13 of the pedestal 12. 4The flange 39 is provided at its outer edge with an upstanding flange 41 which is provided yat its opposite .ends with oppositely arranged ratchet teeth 42 adapted to be engaged by The pawls 43 which are urged. into active position by light springs da. A limited amount of play of the slide may be had before the main pawl 4:2 engages the first shoulder of the adjacent ratchet d2 and each p'awl is' adapted to rest upon the upper face of the first tooth of the adjacent ratchet and be thereby supported at such distance from the bottom of the coin groove i3 that, when a coin is introduced through the receivin slot and drops by gravity into the aline slot 4:0 and rests in the bottom of groove 13, the `'end of the adjacent pawl 43 will lie close to the periphery of the coin and somewhat above, the center of the coin so that, when a pusli"is\ei;erted in the proper direc tion upon the slide 18 the coin will be driven under the adjacent pawl i3 so as to lift it free from the adjacent ratchet 42 and permit the slide to be projected laterally as indcated by dotted lines in Fig. 3. This ejection of the slide will cause the platform 19 to strip the lowermost box 35 from the formenigeen tal 12 and drops into one of the pockets 1l and when the slide has been fully projected, the article which has been stripped from the bottom of the forward stack is brought into registry with the adjacent notch 24 so that it can be readily withdrawn from the slot.

have its periphery driven beneath the active pawl to shift the same out of the path of 55 movement of the adjacent ratchet.
