To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTON C. SoHUEn- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Closing Cocks or Faucets, of which the following is -a specification.
This invention has reference to self-closing cocks wherein the valve is normally held closed-against the pressure, andv has for an object to provide a cock composed of relatively few parts, each one of which is of a substantial nature and so peculiarly formed that when the parts are assembled a compact device is roduced capable of perform; ing all of the functions demanded of a cock of this nature.
The invention further aims at a compact cock structure admitting of the ready removal and replacement of its several parts, wherein the casing or body of the cock has a straight central passage with an outwardly facing valve seat at its inner end, wherein the valve member is carried in the passage in line with the seat, and is normally held in the seat by a spring pressing against the outer end of the valve member and supported in a suitable cap, the cap closing the outer end of the passage and retaining the member in place, wherein the casing has a second passage intersecting the central passage and having one end communicating with an outlet spout, while its other end is closed by an operating stem, and wherein the valve seat may be easily ground by re-- moving the'cap and the valve memberw ereby the grinding instrument may be inserted in the central passage in line with the seat.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will appear from the following detail description of the present embodiment of the invention, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal and central section through the improved cock,
Fig. 2-is a horizontal longitudinal section ,Referring to-the drawing, 10 designates the casing or body of the cock which is preferably of s herical form and provided with a rearward y extending shank or barrel portion 11. The shank 11 is threaded exteriorly at its extremity and is provided with an exterior annular shoulder 12, in the usual manner. Within the shank 11 and in alinement with the shoulder 12 is a valve seat 13 facing outwardly toward the casing 10. The casing 10 is formed with a central longitudinal bore closed at its outer end by a cap 14 threaded in the casing and in direct line with the Valve seat 13. The upper and lower sides of the casing 10 are provided with registering openings forming a channel through the casing at right angles to the central passage. A spout 15 is carried upon the under side of the casing and communicates with the lower end of the channel while a stem guide 16 is carried in the upper side of the casing to close the up er end of the channel.
l ocated within the central passage or channel of the casing 10 and shank 11 is a valve member, the same comprising a cylindrical block 17 having a reduced disk portion 18. The disk portion 18 is recessed at it outer side or face for the reception of a suitable packing 19, held within the disk by-a screw 20 or like member-engaging centrally in the block. The disk portion 18 and the packing 19 form the valve. An annu lar groove 21 is formed in the block immediately in front of the valve, and provides a passage for the fluid passing through the shank 11 about the valve. The block 1'? is provided in its lower side with a groove or channel 22 communicating at its rear end with the annular groove 21, and at its forward end with the spout 15. A groove 23 is formed in the upper side of the block 17 communicating with the annular groove 21 and with the lower groove or channel 22, through an opening or bore 245 formed vertically through the block 17 intermediate its ends. The forward end of the block is recessed transversely to provide a lip 25 and a pair of shoulders 26, the lip 25 extending across the entire width of the blockwhile the shoulders are positioned adjacent the sides of the block ahd at the sides ofthe upper groove or channel 23.
The cap 14 is hollowed and carries a compression member 27 in the form of an expanding ends against the head of the cap and the forward extremity of the valve member or block 17, respectively.
The stem guide 16, carried in the up er side of the casing 10, supports a rotata le operating stem 28, terminating at its inner end in a disk 29 movable against the lower extremity of the stem guide 16. The disk 29 is of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the lower end of the stem guide 16 to admit of the removal of the disk and the stem 28 with the cap, and at the same time holds the stem 28 in position through the stem guide. A substantially triangularly shaped cam 30 is formed against the under side of the disk 29 at its rear portion, two of the angular sides or faces of thecam 30 extending backwardly within the casing 10 for alternate engagement with the shoulders 26, as the operating stem 28 is oscillated. The disk 29 is cut away at its rear edge to provide continuations of the said two angular faces of the cam. The other side of the cam faces outwardly and is adapted to receive thereagainst the lipl 25, the cam 30 bearing against the lip w en the operating stem 28 is turned to move the valve member forwardly against the compression member 27. The stem guide 16 carries, upon its upper end, a packing gland 31, compressing a suitable packing 32 in the recessed upper end of the stem guide-16 and against the stem 28. A handle 33, preferably of disk form, is carried upon the upper end of the stem 28, the handle 33 having a dependin apertured boss 34 receiving the stem 28 an held thereto by a set screw 35.
In operation, the compression member or spring 27 yieldingly holds the valve member 17 back within the casing 10 to normally seat the valve against the valve seat 13. When it is desired to open the valve the stem 28 is turned to move one end cam 30 against the lip 25, such movement sllding the valve member 17 forwardly in the'casing against the tension of the spring 27, and moving the valve away from the seat 13. The shoulders 26 engage against the inclined faces of the cam 30 and limit the turning movement of the stem 28, reventmg the cam 30 from moving on to cad center with respect to the valve member. As soon as the stem 28 is released the compress1on member 27 forces the valve member back in the casing, turning the cam 30 and stem 28 to neutral position, and seats the valve against the valve seat 13. If it is de- .sired to grind the' valve seat 13 it is only necessary to remove the detachable stem guide 16 and the cap 14 from the casing, the stem guide 16 carrying the cam 30 away from the valve member while the cap 14 releases thecompression member and admits of the sliding. of the operating member for spring, engaging at its opposite the turnin of the upon the o ening wardly through the casing. A straight passage or channel is thereby had in directline with the valve seat 13, and a suitable grinding instrument may be readily inserted in the casing and against the valve seat. It is thus seen that the packing 19 for the valve may be easily renewed when the valve member is withdrawn from the cock. When the valve is advanced forwardly from the valve seat 13 the fluid enters the casing or shank or barrel portion 11 around the sides of the valve and out through the depending spout 15. The fluid passing around the upper side of the valve flows into groove 23 and down through the opening or bore. 24:v into the lower portion of the barrel portion 11 and out through the spout. By t e provision of this opening or bore 24 an uninterrupted flow of the casing.
Having fully explained my invention, what Iclaim as new is:
1. In a self closlng .cock, an 'elongated casing having a valve seat at its inner endv and a spout at its outer end, a valve member slidable in the casing, a valve on the inner end of said valve member, a spring in the outer end of said casing bearin against the valve member to normally seat t e valve, the forward end of said valve member having a transverse recessacross its u per side with parallel walls, the forwar one of which constitutes an abutment, and an operatin stem projecting down into the cas ng and aving a cam on its lower end engaglng in the recess, said cam having a flat outer face normally engaging said abutment wall and having oplpositely inclined faces at its inner side, eit er of which is adapted to engage the inner wall of said recess upon of the cam whereby to limit the rotation o the cam. 2. In a self closing cock, an elongated casing havin a valve seat at its inner end and a depen g spout at its outer end, a valve member in said casing bearing against the walls thereof whereby to guide the valve member: and prevent vibration of the same, a valve on the inner end of the valve member, a spring in the outer end of the said fluid is had through the entire casing engaging said member whereby to normally seat said valve, having longitudinal grooves in the upper and lower sides thereof and a central opening intercommunicating the grooves adapted to permit the unrestricted flow of fluid through the casing to the dependin spout end ofsai valve member having a transverse recess across its upper side with parallel walls the forward .one of which constitutes an abutment,and an operating stem projecting down into said casing and having a cam on its lower endengagingin the resaid valve member of the valve, the orward eess, said -cam having a flat outer face nor 18'0 mally engaging said ebutment wall and havmy hand in presence of tW ing oppositely inclined faces at its inner side newes.
