Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN MARION BRAS- INGTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bennettsville, in the county of Marlboro and State of South Carolina, have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in plows.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of plows, and to provide a simple and inexpensive plow of great strength and durability, designed principally for the cultivation of cotton and corn, and equipped with means for rigidly connecting the standard to the beam, and adapted to enable the handles to be rigidly mounted on it without the use of the braces that are ordinarily employed for connecting the handles with the plOW beam.
A further object of the invention is to obviate the necessity of piercing the plow beam at the front of the standard, and to brace the beam at this point where it is subjected to the greatest strain and is most liable to break- With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a plow, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4c isa detail perspective View of the upper portion of the standard.

In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the plow beam is composed of spaced rear bars 1 and a front adjustable bar or member 2, pivoted by a transverse bolt 3 between the front ends of the spaced bars 1. The bolt 3, which pierces the front ends of the spaced bars 1, passes through the pivoted bar 2 at a point intermediate of the ends thereof, and the said bar 2 has a rear upwardly curved portion 4, extending above the upper edges of the spaced bars 1 and having its rear edge resting against an adjustable clamp. The adjustable clamp is composed of an approximately U-shaped yoke 5 and a bolt 6. The yoke extends across and is seated upon the upper edges of the spaced bars 1, and its side portions fit against the outer faces of the bars 1. The bolt 6, which is arranged vertically, pierces the yoke and extends through the space be tween the bars 1. The headof the bolt is arranged against the upper face of the yoke 5, and the lower end of the bolt, which is threaded receives a nut 7, a washer 8 being interposed between the nut and the lower edges of the bars 1. The clamp performs the double function of connecting the bars 1 and forming a stop for supporting the rear end of the pivoted bar or member 2, and by adjusting the clamp forwardly or rearwardly, the position of the bar or member 2 is changed, as illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The adjustment of the bar or member 2 enables the plow to be arranged to run at the proper depth. The yoke 5 of the clamp prevents the bars 1 from spreading, and the pivoted bar is provided at its front end with an opening 2 adapted to receive a suitable draft device for enabling a swingletree to be connected to the front end of the plow beam.
The rear portions of the spaced bars 1 are secured to the top of a standard 9, which is in the form of a frame, being composed of horizontal. top and bottom bars or portions 10 and 11, front and rear upright bars 12 and 13, and'an inclined brace 14. The horizontal top bar fits against the lower edges of the spaced bars 1, and is provided with front and rear vertical flanges 15 and 16, arranged midway between the side faces of the top bar 10, and fitting between and spacing the bars 1 of the beam. The front flange 15 is provided in its upper edge with a notch or recess 17 for the reception of a transverse bolt 18, extending across the upper edge of the bars 1 and passing through vertical side plates 19, which are secured at their lower ends to the standard at opposite sides thereof by a bolt 20. The bolt 20 pierces the standard at the top portion thereof, and the side plates and bolts obviate the necessity of piercing the bars 1 of the beam at the front of the standard where the beam is subjected 1 the rigid'ba'rs 1 of the beam, 7
wardly from the beam at a point in advance of the standard and having its front end secured between the spaced bars 1 of the beam by means of a bolt 22. The rear portion 23' of the brace or bar 21 is curved downwardly and rearwardly and extends between the bar 2 and is secured to thesame at apoint n rear of the'flange 15 bya transverse bolt 2t.
The brace or bar 21 also assists in spacing Thebrace l fiof the standa rd is centrally arranged and inclined. It extends upwardly and forwardly from the horizontalbottom portion 11 at a point near thece-nter thereof, and it is connected at thetop with the ,up: per portion of the frontbar 12 and with the adjacent portion of the top bar 10. The central brace is provided at opposite sides with spaced tapering lugs 25, provided at their inner ends with straight parallel inclined 1 edges 26 and forming recesses for the reception of'the lower ends 27 of handles28, which are/secured to the central brace by a transverse'bolt 29. The handles are inclined and extend upwardly and rearwardlyifrom the central brace 14,,a'ndare secured to the rear portion of the rear flange 16. The rear flange 16 is provided with front and rear perforations 30 and 31 for ,the reception of bolts 32 and 33, which pierce the rear ends of the bars 1 and the handles. The flange 16 extends rearwardlybeyond the rear terminals of the bars 1 to enable the handles to be secured to it. By securing the handles t0 thecentr'al brace and to the rear flange of the standard, the handles are rigidly supported and the braces usually employed for connecting the handles witlr'the beam are eliminated. The upper and lo-wer lugs 25 fit against the upper and lower edges of the handles at the lower ends thereof, and they co -act with the bolt 29 for holding the ban dles, and they effectually prevent the samef from tilting on the bolt 33. Having thus fully describedmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
'1. A plow comprising a standard, and a beam including spaced rear bars secured to the standard, a front bar pivoted at a point intermediate of its ends between the front portion of the spaced rear bars and having its rear portions extended, upwardly and r'earwardly, and means adjustable'along the spaced bars and receiving and supporting the' rear portion of the front pivoted bar.

A plow comprising a standard having a top bar provided with a vertical flange, a beam including spaced bars seated upon the top bar of the standard and receiving the flange thereof between them, side plates located at opposite sides of the beam and the standard, upper and lower fastening devices connecting the side plates, the lower fastening device being passed through the standard and the upper fastening device being arranged above the beam and engaged with the flange at the top thereof.
8. A plow comprising a standard having a top bar provided with a Vertical flange, a beam including spaced bars seated upon the top bar of the standard and receiving the flange thereof between them, side plates located at. opposite sides of the beam and the standard, upper and lower fastening devices connecting the side plates, the lower fastening device being passed through the standard and the upper fastening device being arranged above the beam and engaged with the flange at the top thereof, and an inclined brace secured at its lower front end between the bars of the beam at a point in advance of the standard and having a rear curved portion extending downwardly and secured to the bars of the beam in rear of the said flange.
9. A plow comprising a standard composed of horizontal top and bottom bars, the top bar being provided at its rear end with a vertical flange, front and rear bars connecting the top and bottom bars, and a central inclined brace extending from the bottom bar to the top of the standard, a beam in cluding spaced bars seated upon the top bar of the standard and receiving the said flange between them and secured to the same, and inclined handles also secured to the said flanges and extending downwardly and forwardly therefrom and secured to the central brace of the standard at opposite sides thereof.
10. A plow comprising a standard composed of horizontal top and bottom bars, the top bar being provided at its rear end with a vertical flange, front and rear bars connecting the top and bottom bars, and a central inclined brace extending from the bottom bar to the top of the standard and provided at opposite sides with spaced upper and lower lugs forming intervening recesses, a beam including spaced bars seated upon the top bar of the standard at opposite sides of the flange and secured to the same, said flange being extended in rear of the beam, and inclined handles secured to the extended portion of the flange and having their lower ends fitted in the recesses of the central brace and secured to the latter.
