To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELLIS LINDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Spool for Music-Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a new and improved spool for music rolls. These spools consist'of a cylindrical body portion having end flanges. It is common to make the righthand flange rigid with the body portion, and to make the left-hand flange adjustable moving lengthwise of the spool body to allow for expansion of the paper roll in moist atmospheres.
The invention relates to an improved construction for a spool of this class.
The invention comprises in substance a spool having a hollow cylindrical body portion on which the right-hand flange is formed or secured and a left-hand end flange having a projecting hub reduced in crosssection between the flange and the end thereof, as by forming a suitablegroove therein, the body portion of the spool being depressed inwardly to engage the groove. By this construction a spool of this character can be made very cheaply. The material preferably employed is of a non-hydroscopic nature, such as rubber fiber or rubber c0mposition.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawing in which,
Figure l is a partial end view ofa spool partly in section, illustrating the flange separated from the body portion of the spool; Fig. 2 is a similar'view illustrating the hub of the flange inserted in the body portion of the spool; Fig. 3 is a similar view, the flange and hub being shown in section, illustrating the manner in which the body portion is depressed to hold the flange to the spool; and Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the complete spool.
Referring to the drawing and in detail, A designates the cylindrical body portion of the spool which has a flange B formed or secured on the right-hand end thereof.
C designates the other or left-hand flange. This flange has a projecting hub. The cylindrical body portion A is made hollow and said-hub is of a diameter to fit therein. The hub is provided with a groove D formed at a distance from the flange and from the end of the hub so as to leave two full-sized sections E and F of the hub. The hub is inserted into the end of the body portion, as shown in Fig. 2, and then the material of the body portion is depressed inwardly as at G so that the material thereof will engage into the groove D on the hub. This inwardly depressed portion G on the body portion is preferably made annular and the depressed portion is less in width than the groove D in the hub, whereby the end flange is held in place relatively to the booty portion so as to be free to move lengthwise with respect thereto for a slight distance. It also will be noticed that the end flange is capable of rotation independently of the body portion.
By this construction, the spool can be very cheaply manufactured and the left-hand flange of the spool is free to move lengthwise of the spool a slight distance so as to accommodate music sheets of slightly varying widths, and so as to allow for the expanding or contracting of the music sheet caused by atmospheric changes. The parts can be very easily manufactured and assembled by suitable machinery.
The details and arrangements herein shown and described may be greatly varied by a skilled mechanic without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown, but what I do claim is 1. A spool for music rolls, comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion, and an end flange having a hub projecting within said body portion and reduced in cross section at a point between its ends, said body portion having a depression formed therein engaging said reduced portion to limit endwise movements of said flange relative to said body portion.
2. A spool for music rolls, comprising a hollow cylindrical body portion, and a flange having a projecting hub with an annular groove formed therein, said hub projecting within the body portion and the body portion having an annular depression engaging the annular groove of said hub.
3.
