The corrugations T are preferably terminated a short distance above the bottom edge of the sheet iii order to provide for the rivets .10 which secure the sheet to the mud' ring sheet 13, the curved olset portion is continued so as to increase the flexibility to take care of the aforesaid expansion and contraction, and I have along this portion provided a plurality of reinforcing brackets 14 which are spaced apart a suitable distance and extend throughout substantially the length of the throat sheet 13. These brackets 14 are curved in a manner corresponding to the flanged 'odset 12 and are 'adapted to seat upon the oliset with a snug fit, being either riveted or Welded to the tube sheet 4 and throat sheet 13. In Fig. l Iv have shown the reinforcing brackets 14 riveted as shown at 15, while in Fig. 5 the said brackets are Welded directly to the sheets. The function of 'these brackets 14 is to strengthen the junctionA between the tube sheet and the throat sheet, since it will readily be understood that this portion ot the sheet is not only exposed to the intense heat of the fire box but is also subjected to the Weight of the tubes 6 which are secured to' the tube sheet 4. In effect the offset portion 12 is a curved corrugation which substantially encircles the tubes 6 and has the most unusual and trying conditions to contend With since its normally overheated condition, together with the weight of the tubes renders it exceedingly liable to become distorted or buckled on its lower circumference. providing a plurality of the brackets 14 the corrugation or oli'set 12 is strengthened, at all the necessary points and the aforesaid danger of distortion in use is practically eliminated, while at the saine time the increased heating surface of the Ibackhead is preserved, and there is a decided gain in flexibility. Furthermore, by this construe tion the number of stay-boltsrequired is reduced to a minimum without in any manner impairing the factor of safety of the boiler .tine one and rigidity eliectively maintained at one place while lexibilityis given at another. As a further means for increasing the strength of the throat sheet 13 I have preferred-to provide a plurality of substantially vertical corrugations 16 which extend at suitable intervals from one side of the. sheet to the other beneath the offset corrugation 12.'
Referring novv to the back sheet 3, it will be noted that I have provided the saine with a plurality of corrugations 17 givin iiicreased heating surface to this sheet an also providing flat portions between adjacent corrugations for the Water leg stay-bolts 18.
It` will now be apparent that I have pro vided a com lete unitary structure particularly Well a apted for the presen -day extended lire boxes and which rovides" for a flexibility. not heretofore attained, whereby the tubes have free expansion and contraction Without affecting the supporting sheets or causing distortion thereof, andl without developing Weakness in the surroundingthat my invention is intended for use with all types of tubular boilers, and While I prefer the construction herein disclosed and set forth, the details thereof may be modified `ivithout departing from the spirit .of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a ste'am boiler, a tube sheet having a series of apertures for the tubes' and provided With a corrugation substantiallyencircling the apertured area, and means for reinforcing said tube sheet along said corrugation.
y2. In a steam boiler,a tube sheet having a series of apertures for the tubes-and provided Wit-h a corrugation substantially encirclingsaid apertured area and also having a' plurality of corrugations belowsaid en-,
circling corrugation, and means for reinforcing said tube sheet along said encircling corrugation.
8. In a steam boiler, a tube sheet having a series of apertures for the tubes and provided With a corrugation ,encircling the apeitured area, and a plurality of reinforcing brackets secured to said tubesheet and disposed at suitable intervals along said corrugation.
4.. In a steam boiler, a tube sheet having a series of apertures -for the tubes and provided with a. corrugat-ion substantially enl ranged in. generally vertical direction above und below Seid door aperture and also at circling said apertured area., and a plurality of reinforcing brackets straddhng said corrugation and secured to said tube sheet.
5. In a steam boiler7 e ire'box coinpi'isi f" a tube sheet and e throat sheetj and provid d.
with 'a corrugation having e portion located l at the junction of said tube sheet with said throat sheet and substantially encircling the tube area, said throat shecthaving u plurality of substantially vertically errang rugations, and a plurality of brackets @tra L dling said encirclingconugation and secured ,at one end to saidtube sheet, and at the other end to said throat sii-eet,
ln a boiler, e .tire box having a bac Sheet wider at the bottom than at the top end provided with e fianged re door aperture und a plurality of corrug'etions areach side thereo3 and extending into ciose proximity to the top and bottom ofsuid beck ;:lieet, said corrugations inclining toward each other' at the upper part of the sheet, and all of eaid corrugatione being spaced independently apart and providing between them flat portions of theA Sheet. having a general upright., direction7 combined with etuyfbolts `secured into the Het portions of i the sheets between lthe eorrugations.
ln testimony' of which invent-ion, I hereunto set my hand.
