To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, PETER lVUKsTIGI-I, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at East Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Escapes, ofwhich the following is a specification. V
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fire escapes.
An object of the invention is to provide a fire escape for apartment houses or other large buildings and 0f the endless ladder type to be positioned in a Well or shaft and which communicates with each apartment or room facing the well in the building.
A still further ob ect of the invention is to provide a lire escape in the form of an endless ladder and connecting to the outer face thereof baskets or carriages for the convenience of babies or invalids.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention will be more specifically described in detail and then claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings by like characters throughout the several views and wherein V Figure l is a vertical cross-sectional view of my improved fire escape. Referring more specifically to the drawings, the reference letter A designates a shaft or well formed in a building and opening into the well arethe several rooms or apartments B. Each room is provided with a fire door 0.
The form of ladder shown is of the endless type and is generally designated 10. A pair of shafts 11 and 12 are j ournaled in the bearings 13 at the upper and lower ends respectively, one end of the shaft 12 being mounted in the standard 1e and extending a slight distance beyond the same. Each of the shafts 11 and 12 adjacent the ends thereof is provided with sprocket wheels 15 which are fixed thereto, said shafts further carrying a plurality of spaced pulleys 16.

travels over the sprocket wheels 15 and is connected to the longitudinal strands 17 by oppositely inclined reinforcing stay members 20, looped around the outer longitudinal strands as shown, to provide diagonal braces for the chains which will tend to prevent all lateral movement and cause the same to work in a more efficient manner. These stay members 20 consist of wires bent around the longitudinal and transverse strands 17 and 18, at the points of juncture of the ends of the strands 18 with the strands 17. After being bent around the ladder strands, the stays 20 diverge and are bent around or otherwise firmly secured to the inner sides of the sprocket chains 19, thus insuring a secure connection of the ladder with the sprocket chains, so that the movement of said chains moves the ladder upon its revo- I luble supports, and the pulleys 16. The sprocket chains 19 travel over sheave rollers 21 which may be adjusted to take up the slack in the ladder. The outer face of the ladder carries a number of baskets or carriages 22.
Each carriage comprises a. box-like structure with a relatively low front wall 23 and a high rear wall 2% with partially closed sides as at 25. These carriages may be con nected to the ladder in any suitable manner, but preferably as shown, the rear wall adjacent the upper end thereof is provided with a pair of spaced openings through which the transverse strands 18 pass. The lower end of the carriage is connected thereto in a similar manner.
The end of the shaft 12 which extends through the standard 1 1 carries a gear wheel 26 fixedly secured thereto and meshes with a pinion 27 mounted upon one end of the shaft 28, the shaft 28 being mounted in the bearings 29. The other end of this shaft carries a pulley 30 which establishes communication with the fly wheel 31 of the motor 32 tirough the medium of the belt drive 33, although any other form of communication could be utilized.
It is of course understood that the endless ladder is disposed near enough to the apartments or rooms to permit the occupants to readily step from said rooms on to the ladder and that the baskets or carriages carried by the ladder also travel near enough thereto to permit an invalid or baby to be readily placed therein and carried to safety to a point below, there being an attendant at the bottom to remove the persons from the carriages and carry them through the exit door tl to the'outside of the building.
