To all whom it may concern:
Be i "known that I, THOMAS DONALD ADAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorchester, Boston, in: the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improve- 'ments. in Gasolene and Water Separators;
and I do hereby declare the following to be I a full, cleagl, and exact description of the invention, s ch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
consists in the separator hereinafter de- .scribed and particularly defined in the claim.
The present invention relates to an improvement in gasolene and water separators.
The object of the present invention is to produce an improved gasolene and water separator adapted for use in a gasolene supply pipe,-which is simple and cheap in construction and eflicient in operation.
To the above'ends the present invention In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the separator; Fig. 2 is a top plan with the head removed; and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention is described as follows :'-The separator in general consists of a cylindrical body having heads by which it is adapted to be attached to the inlet and outlet pipes, the
. gasolene flowing in at one end and out at the: other, and the water carried with it being separated from the gasolene during its passage through the device.
The body of the device consists of a tubular shell 1. This shell is closed at the lower end by the bottom 2 sweated in place, and having a screw-threaded nipple 3 thereon adapted to receive the sleeve nut of the union by which it is attached tothe' gasolene supplypipe. The'bottom is provided with three drain screws l having leather washers 5 under their heads to render them gasolene tight. These screws screw into three holes culty, so three screws are provided.
in the bottom 2. y,
In assembling this separator with a carbureter or other apparatus, if only one drain screw were provided it would sometimes happen to come in such a position as to be inaccessible, or accessible only with difii- Rising from the bottom 2.is a delivery pipe 10 which is driven with a drive fit into the bottom,- and at its u'pper end. is
provided with a deflector 11 which rises rom. one side of the delivery pipe 10 and extends transversely across and beyond the mouth of the. delivery pipe When. asolene containing water flows in through t is pipe it strikesthe-baflie-ll and any entrained water or particles of Water carried along with the gasolene which strikes the bafiie is 7 arrested in its movement-thereby and permitted to fall through the body of gasolene in the separator to the bottom of the separator. In this way the direct flow of gasolene from the delivery pipe to the outlet is prevented, and the water is permitted the opportunity to separate itself from the moving gasolene and to drop out of the current thereof. The top 12 of the separator consists of a conical head which is adapted to be forced into the upperend of the cylindrical shell of the body 1 of the separator and to be sweated into place. The upper end of the head forms a union to screw on to a threaded pipe connection similar to 3, to which gasolene is delivered from the separator. In the neck of'the head 12 a fine wire gauze diaphragm 13 is provided which is held against a shoulder by the follower 14 which 1s forced with a driving fit against the inside of the wire netting 13. This wire netting affords a further preventive for the escape of water from the separator.
\ It will be observed that the mouth of the delivery pipe 10 is located at-a considerable distance above the bottom of the separator, so therefore a large quantity of water may collect in the separator without bringing it to. such a level as to make its escape from the separator possible. 4 will be opened from time to time to draw olf any water which may have collected in the In use, a drain screw separator. In the preferred construction the templates a delivery pipe entering a separating chamber provide near its mouth with a baflie arranged at right angles to the direction of the delivery pipe. Thus, viewed in its broader aspects, the invention eontemplates the use of the separator in horizontal position or in any position between the vertical and the horizontal. The present invention is not limited to the illustrated embodiment, as it may be embodied in other forms within the scope of the following claim.
I claim:
A gasolene and water separator consisting of a-body having a bottom provided with an inte al asolene inlet, a delive i e supportg d in side the inlet and. ext n i g upward from the bottom and having a mouth at some elevation thereabove provided with a portion bent at right an les to the direction of the delivery pipe to cm a bafile extending across and covering but not closing the mouth of the delivery pipe, and a top having a discharge openmg for the gasolene, substantially as described.
