UNITED` STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
FREDERICK WILLIAM VICKERY, 0F LONDON, ENGLAND.
SHEET-DELIVERY MECHANISM.
T0 all whom it may concer/n Be it known that I, FREDERICK WILLIAM VICKERY, a. subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Delivery Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to sheet delivery mechanisms. and more especially to that type of delivery mechanism which includes sets of feeding bands, pressing and bending devices for acting on the sheets cooperatively with each other and with said bands, and gages for insuring the proper stacking of the sheets after the latter have passed the aforementioned appliances or instrumentalities.
It comprehends certain.improvements in or relating to the mounting of the feeding appliances, whereby the same may be moved or removed bodily as a whole on and from the machine without interfering with the other parts thereof; further improvements in the construction and arrangement of the said appliances; and still further improvements in or relating to the delivery table and its mounting, all of which improvements are hereinafter described at length.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the improved delivery mechanism; Figs. 2 and 3 are, respectively, a side elevation, likewise with parts in section, and a plan view, of a modified arrangement of the structure shown in Fig. 1; Figs. f1 to 7, inclusive, are detail views of various modifica tion in the construction and arrangement of the appliances and parts thereof included in or associated with the delivery mechanism and the delivery table; Figs. 8 and 9 are detail views of the means for raising the de livery table; and Figs. 10 and 11 are detail views of a further modification.
As shown in said drawings, the improved delivery mechanism consists primarily of one or more sets of bands 1, presser rollers 3, benders 27 and gages 22 connected with a single element, which is preferably in the form of a longitudinally-disposed rod 19 and is itself so supported' in the machine that it may be moved bodily thereon or removed bodily therefrom and, with it, the set or sets 'of appliances above referred to.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 5, 1911.
Then only one sheet of paper is beingdef hvered at a time, in the machine, two of the mechanisms shown in Fig. 1 are employed, with one gage 22 at each side of the sheet; but when `two or more sheets are being delivered side by side at one time, the mechai nism shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is utilized, with one gage between each pair of adjacent sheets, as will he understood. These gages are always `at the sides of the sheets and never at the center thereof.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, each rod 19 carries a socket piccelS held thereon in adjusted position by a set screw 20, which socket piece is pivotally connected to a bracket `15 provided with jaws 1G that straddle a transversely-arranged rod 12, one of said jaws being fastened to said rod 12 by a set screw 17. The rod 12 just mentioned is secured to a pair of brackets 13 which, in turn, are carried by a pair of posts i lll positioned upon opposite sides of the machine. In this construction, each set of appliances is carried by a single supporting rod 19, the number of such sets beingydependent on the number of sheets of paper to be acted upon. These appliances are preferably connected to their rods in the following manner: To the forward portion. of the rod there alixed a pair of spaced brackets 21 provided with pins 24 upon which a gage 22 is suspended, the latter being formed with vertical slots 23, through which the pins project, so as to permit it to move up and down and thus accommodate itself to the height or angle of the receiving table. not shown), the sheets being fed onto said table from delivery table 2, to which latter they are fed from the cutting mechanism, (not shown),` by a belt 38 passing at one end around a roller 9, as is customary. The rear bracket 21 has an extension 25 to which is pivoted at 26 one of the wedge-shaped benders 2T, the extension and bender being provided with stops 28 to limit the downward movement of said bender and insure the proper positioning of its point when the mechanism is ready for use. Adjacent its rear end, rod 19 carries a tubular bracket 28il provided with jaws 29 that strad'dle a second trans-` verse rod 30 employed to steady rod 19. To this bracket QtrL is pivotally connected at 31 the arm l that carries the presser roller 3,- said arm having a forked upper end 32 which engages a stop 33lon said bracket,
whereby the downward movement of the arm is limited, as will be understood. Roller 3 is located at the lower end of arm 4l, and to its supporting shaft is rigidly secured a pulley connected by one of the bands l with a second pulley 7 which is mounted lupon the free upper end of an arm 34, the latter being pivoted at its lower `end to the aforesaid supporting shaft. To control the movement of arm 34, that arm is provided with an extension 36 carrying` a set screw 37 which rests at its lower end upon arm 4. Motion is imparted to roller 3 and pulley 35 (and, from said pulley, by band l to pulley 7), by means of a driving roller 10, with which the former roller contacts, the driving` roller receiving its own motion in any suitable manner, as, for instance, by a belt 888 connecting its supporting shaft with that of the pulley 9.
lhe general ope 1ation is substantially as follows: The paper in sheet form is fed along belt 3S onto the inclined portions of the bender-s 27, (two of which are positionedl at the required distance apart), where it is passed up the inclines and comes in contact with the bands 1, these bands being preferably inclined at about the angle shown, so that the paper is curled upward. This bending or curling of the paper corrects or neutralizes its normal tendency to curve or curl downward, so that the sheets issuing between the rollers 3 and 10 pass between the gages onto the receiving table and, on striking the same, straighten out and lie perfectly flat.
.lt will be seen from the foregoing that when the set screw 17 has been withdrawn the supportingrod 19 may be moved on or removed bodily4 from the machine,.carrying with it the entire set of above-mentioned appliances comprising the delivery mechanism, without interfering with the other parts and instrumentalities comprehended in the machine. This operation, moreover, may be facilitated by attaching a suitable handle 39 to the bracket 15.
in the construction shown in Figs. Q and 3, two sets of arms 4 and 34: are controlled by a single rod 19 and are adjustable as to distance apart to suit the position of the sheets of paper under operation, the presser rollersl 3 being arranged to act on separate sheets, `between which sheets one vbender 9T and a gage 22 are positioned. To effect this control, the rear end of rod 19 is formed with a bearing Ll() and a perforated boss 41. In bearing 40, and upon opposite sides thereof, are journaled intermediate their ends a pair of arms 19a and 19b having divergent rear portions which at their free ends are connected to eyes 42 provided upon the rear ends of the adjacent arms el. rlhe forward portions of the arms 19"L and 19b are provided with slotted quadrants 43 and or the benders and gages may be removedV bodily from tlie machine, in which instance the bracket 15 is disengaged from rod 12 and the ends of arms 19a and 19b removed from eyes 42, as will be understood.
lWhen it is desirable that the presser roller 3 run out of square or line with the driving` roller 10, (and this deviation` need only be rei v slight) the arms il may be permanently set, t. e., initially constructed and arranged at the proper angle to effect the required positioning of said presser rollers, as shown in li` 4, or the same result may be obtained by providing a suitable pivotal mounting for arms ll. The object of this is as follows: `When the sheets reach the delivery mechauism, they sometimes have a fullness, and they are also caused to bulge toward the center at times on passing over the benders; in either instance, a crease is produced in the sheet, and when that part of the sheet reaches the presser rollers, the crease is deepened or made permanent and the sheet `is marked or broken, but by setting the presser rolle-rs slightly out of square or line with the driving roller the former tend to pull out the sheet straight and flat, without causing the tiresl carried thereby to apprcciably wear, mark or injure the thinnest paper.
The arms carrying the pulleys 7 may also carry a series of small wheels 4:5 extending throughout practically their entire length, as sho-wn in Fig. 5, which wheels are normally positioned in close proximity to table but are capable of rising with said arms when the table is raised. The wheels referred to may be driven by the bands 1., or in any other suitable manner.
The table 2 may be replaced by a series of wheels or rollers llG, (see F ig. 6), driven in unison by a band Ma, or may be provided with a series of these wheels or rollers which are set therein, and in either instance the arm may be formed as a smoother, as indicated. by the numeral 47 in Fig. 6, this smoother extending from the presser roller 3 back over the feed belt 38.
The presser rollers may be provided with tires it, as shown in Fig. 7, and since these roller/'f are of slightly larger diameter than the pulleys 35,110 appreciable wear takes place upon the bands which connect said pulleys with the pulleys 7, as said bands are thus maintained ont of frictional engagement with the driving roller 10.
ln practice a considerable amount of damaged paper is fed to the delivery mechanism, especially` when a new set of reels is being' started, When the reels break, and at 'the ends of the reels; these damaged sheets stack unevenly and frequently choke up the delivery mechanism if not full-sized, in which case. they must be pulled out by hand, with the result that the bands are often displaced` from the pulleys and the cutting' mechanism "is stopped. To obviate this defect, means is provided for raising the table E3, such means preferably consisting, as shown in Figs. l and Q, and in detail in Figs. S and 9, of a hand lever 52 connected to said table by a link 5l. When the lever 52 is turned .from its normal position shown in Fig'. S, into the position shown in Fig. 9,
the connecting' link 51 and consequently, the
table are drawn upwardly, the sheets are free to dro-p thereunder into the pit, the elevated end of the table lifts the pulley 7 slightly, and the latter, through a stop G5 on arm 34., raises arm el and thus carries roller 33 out of frictional engagement ivith the driving roller ll).
In certain types of machine, and when Working on certain classes of paper, it is found desirable to make the rollers 3 as light and narrow as possible. In this case, the bands 1 are replaced by endless belts 'lS, (Figs. l0 and 1l), constructed With a gripping' surface of rubber or leather; these belts are preferably of V, D, or analogous section` and t in correspondingly-shaped peripheral ,Qjrooves in the pulleys 7 and 35, to prevent their displacement. y
The operation and advantages of the entire invention are believed to be apparent from the foregoing', and further description thereof is accordingly omitted.
