To all whom 'it may come/rn Be it known that I, WILLIAM l. 'nwitnm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pueblo, in the county' ot Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Derailing capable opt being easily transported, adapted 1 to beconnected t0 4a rail at any desired point, and having means Jtor checking and eraling a car at any predetermined point to protect car repairs, inspectors, or track ends, and having means for supporting a flag or other signall In the drawings z-Figure l isa perspective View of the device in place, Fig. 2 is an end view of the derailing device with the rail in section, Fig. 3 is a side view from the inner side of the rail, Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device in place, and Fig. 5 a side View on the outer side of the rail.
The resent embodiment of the invention is shown-1n connection with a rail l,supported by the usual ties 2, and the device comprises a casting or forging, consisting of a plate 3, adapted to rest on the tread of the rail and of a Width corresponding to the width of the tread, each end of the said .late being bevcled or inclined as indicate( at 4 and Il rcspectve'ly, to provide an` easy approach `from the rail to the top of the plate. At the end adjacent to the incline 4l, the )late is extended as indicated at 5, the sai extension being'of 'much less thickness than the end 4, and a 4flange (5 is provided at the said y end, the said flange extending from the highest portion. oit' the plate to the outer end oi' the extension 5 and the said flange 6 is inclined'with respect tothe rail as indicated more particularly in Fig. 4 The plate is also provided with a depending web T on the inner side olf the rail, the said web being of a length to extend from thiA tread of the rail, that is, `from thel under face of the plate 3, to the base flange of the rail, and the lower edge of the said web rests upon the base flan-:3. as shown more particularly in Fig. 2.

The lug 'l0 extends thc full width of the web 9, and at its lower end the said lu` is provided with a perforated ear 17. he gripping jaw l2 curves downwardly and inwardly, thc free end thereof being adapted to engage the web o'f the rail below the point ol engagement ot' the portion 16 of the web 9, and when in such position an opening 18 in the said jaw will register with the opening of the ar 1T, and the said openings are adapted for engagement b v the shackle o'l a padlock lf), to prevent outward movement of the. lgripping jaw.

The portion 16 ot the web 9a engages the outer face of the web of the rail, and when the gripping-jawL l2 is secured to the lug 1l by the pad lock 19, the said device is locked firmly yin place on the rail. movement with respect to the rail. When a car engages the inclined end 4 of the plate 3, the'wheel isllifted above the tread and the flange .thereof enters the groove 8 at the top of the web 7. As the wheel travels along the plate 3,1`the flange 6 by its engagement with thefiange of the car wheel, gradually moves thefwhee'l laterally over the rail, so that when the wheel-leaves the device, the car is derailed, that is, the leading wheels of the car are oi' the rails. lIt the movement of the car =continues the rear wheels of tbi front truck will also be derailed. The derailing of the car however, will check the movement of the same.
AThe legend on the plate 24 is a suiiicient warning to persons in charge of rollingI stock tostop the same before engagement with the derailing device. It will be yevident that the device may be easily transported and may be applied at any position on the rail. The device is then turned over into place on the rail. It will be noted that there is a sufficient space between the portion 16 of the derailer and the under face ot' the tread, to permit this movement.
