WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented A11 4,1914.
Application filed. April 14, 1914. Serial No. 831,777.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY C. FInon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hayfield, in the county of Bayfield and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wagons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in wagons and more particularly to an improved form of wagon reach.
It is the object of this invention to provide an extensible wagon reach and so connect the parts to each other that a limited amount of rotation between the parts is provided to allow the wagon to travel over obstructions or unevenness in the road without torsional strain upon the reach, and it is also a further object of this invention to place the adjustment upon the upper side of the reach to be readily accessible and yet prevent the accumulation of dirt or foreign matter within the adjitlsting parts.
While the preferred form of this invention is illustrated upon the accompanying sheets of drawing, yet it is to be understood that minor detail changes may be made without departing from the scope thereof.
Figure 1 is a top plan View of the running gear of a wagon with the front and rear bolsters broken away in each end, illustrating this improved form of reach, with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of Fig. 1 partly in section. Fig. is an enlarged detail view in side elevation of the attaching means. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail bottom plan view of Fig. 3.
The wagon bolsters, front hound circle, and rear hounds are all of the usual construction. The reach comprises two tclescoping members 1 and 2, preferably of metal. tubing, the forward end of forward member 1 having an eye socket 3 welded thereto for receiving the usual king bolt. The rear and larger reach member 2 is secured at its rear end to the rear bolster and projects a short distance to the rear thereof. The front end of the rear member is secured to the rear hounds 4: by upper and lower hound plates 5 and 6, which are provided with longitudinal curved depressions to receive and embrace the outer surface of the rear member 2 with their side edges brought together in horizontal plane and secured by bolts to the rear hounds. The lower hound plate adjacent the forward end is provided with a transverse slot 7 and the corresponding portion of the reach is correspondingly slotted.
To strengthen the forward reach member 1 a steel rod 8 is placed in the forward end extending from the welded socket 3 beyond the portion of the reach contacting with the wear plate upon the hound circle. It is preferable to secure the rod in place by a transverse bolt.
The reach members are secured to each other by a clamp comprising a split ring 9 having upstanding cars 10 at the ends adapted to be brought together by a bolt and double tail nut, readily operatable by the skeimvrench, to securely grip the forward or inner reach member. The side of the split ring opposite the upstanding cars is provided with an integral extension 11. provided at its free end with an upturned lip 12 which is adapted to engage in the longitudinal slots in the under side of the lower hound. plate and rear reach member. This lip is of less width than the length of the slot, whereby a limited amount of rotation of the inner reach member is provided. The rear end of the rear reach member is preferably covered by a screw-threaded cap 13. It is therefore seen that the adjusting nut is always on the upper side of the reach and readily accessible. The longitudinal slot being upon the under side forms no pocket or recess for dirt or other foreign matters to lodge and as the rear end of the rear reach member is closed by the screw cap and the forward end of the forward reach member is closed by the eye socket dirt or other foreign matter can not lodge within the telescoping members to interfere with the operation.
l/Vhat I claim is:-
1. In a wagon, a reach comprising two telescoping tubular members, and means adjustably engaging the smaller member exterior of the surrounding member and having a transverse sliding connection with the exterior member.
2. In a wagon having bolsters and hounds, a reach comprising two telescoping tubular members, the forward member entering with the rear member, said rear member being rigidly secured by the hounds to the rear bolster and provided with a transverse slot adjacent its forward end, and means exterior the rear member adjustably engaging the forward member having an extension loosely engaging and slidable within the slot of the rear member.
3. In a wagon having bolsters and hounds, a reach comprising two telescoping tubular members the forward member entering within the rear member, said rear member engaged by the rear bolster, hound plates securing the forward end of the rear member to the rear hounds, the under side ofthe rear member and the under hound plate pro-' vided with registering transverse slots, an adjusting clamp about the forward member having a rearward extension and means thereon loosely engaging within the slots.
l. In a wagon, having bolsters and hounds, a reach comprising two telescoping tubular lnembers, the, forward member entering within the rear member, said rear member engaged by the bolster, hound plates securing the rear member-to the rear hounds, the under side of the rear member and under hound plate provided with registering transverse slots, and an adjusting clamp comprising a split ring surrounding the forward member having clamping means upon the upper side and a rearward extension upon the under side provided with a lip of less width than the transverse length of the slots loosely engaging thereon.
