Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 5 1913. Serial No. 788,283.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN HELLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at 52$ Clinton street, Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter-13oxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
This invention relates to a miter box, and especially to a device of this character having adjustable saw guides for cutting work at any desired angle.
An object of the invention is to provide a miter box with means for conveniently and :uzcurately adjusting the saw guides for cutting various miters, and means for reliably locking the guides in adjusted position.
Another object is to provide a scale operated by the adjustable saw guides for indicating the exact angle at which the latter are set.
In the accompanying drawing wherein is illustrated an approved embodiment of the invention, Figure 1, represents a top plan view of the miter box. Fig. 2, represents a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3, represents a bottom plan view. Fig. 1, represents a top plan view of the miter box, showing the saw guides in normal position. Fig. 5, represents a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6, represents a side elevation of the saw guides detached. Fig. 7, represents a sectional view on the line 7-7 of Fig. (i. Fig. 8, represents a plan view of an instrument for obtaining and indicating angles. Figs. 9, 10, and 11, represent plan views of work sawed in the miter box when the latter is adjusted as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, where in similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 20 indicates the base or bed of the miter box, to one of the longitudinal edges of which is rigidly secured the work rest 21. The opposite longitudinal edge of the bed 20, is provided with a tongue 22, and a bifurcated block 23, through which is rotatably mounted a screw 24:. A hand wheel 25, is keyed to the shaft or screw 21, between the bifurcations of the block 23, and the opposite ends of the screw are oppositely threaded through blocks 26, fixed in the movable members 27., provided with suitable grooves for receiving the tongue 22, of the bed 20. The hand wheel 25, is adapted to be rotated by the operator, to either separate the movable members 27, or move them t0- gethor, for a purpose which will be hereinafter more clearly described.
Suitable spaced openings are formed through the work support 21, and bed 20, for rotatably receiving the stems 31, of the adjustable saw guide blocks 32. The inner and outer faces of the work support 21, are suitably cut away adjacent the openings for the stems 31, so as to permitthe saw to move downwardly the proper distance within the guide blocks 32, and stems 31. Each guide block 32, and stem 31, is provided with vertical slots 33, disposed at right angles to each other, and when said guide blocks are in the normal position as shown in Fig. i, said slots or grooves therein are disposed exactly at an angle of forty-five degrees to the work rest 21. The upper ends of the saw guides are prefe ably faced with metal for increasing the strength of said guides and the life thereof.
Crank arms 34, are keyed to the lower ends of the stems 31, and are slotted at their free extremities to receive the screws 35, fixed through the movable members 27, whereby when the hand wheel 25, is rotated to move the movable members 27, in opposite directions, rotary movement is simultaneously imparted to the stems 31, and the guide blocks 32. Removable plates or covers 36, are secured to the under side of the bed 20, to permit convenient access to the cranks 34, for oiling or adjusting the same.
A .i'novable scale 37, is pivoted at 38, to one end of the bed 20, and is provided with suitable markings 39, working under a suitable indicator hand 10. The adjustable scale member 37, is connected with the adjacent crank arm 34, by a link ll, whereby the said scale is actuated simultaneously with the saw guides 32, to indicate the angle at which the slots of the latter are set.
1 preferably employ the device shown in Fig. 8, for obtaining the angle at which the work is to be cut, and said device consists of a handle 4L2, in the end of which is fixed scale 43, having markings corresponding to those on the scale 37, and having also a piv oted arm id, having a finger 45, which is adapted to work over the scale 43, to indicate the angle at which the arm 44., is set, with respect to the handle 42.
In Figs. 9, 10, and 11, are shown samples of work out by my improved miter box. This work is cut at an angle represented by the adjustment of the miter box shown in Fig. l, and it is apparent that the miters at the opposite ends of the pieces of work are exactly at right angles to each other, and may be fitted together as shown in Fig. 11, with the abutting ends lying in a vertical plane and the free ends in a horizontal plane, or at right angles to the abutting ends.
What I claim is:
l. A miter box comprising a base member having the front longltudinal edge thereof provided with a guide rib, a block secured to the front edge of the base at a central portion thereof, a pair of slides provided with grooves to receive said rib and disposed upon opposite sides of the block, a threaded screw journaled in the block and extending into said slides, a thumb piece upon the screw and within the block for rotating the screw to move said slides, a work rest upon the upper face of the base and adjacent the opposite longitudinal edge thereof, a pair of guide blocks having slots therein at right angles to each other, stems projecting from the guide blocks and intercepting the work rest adjacent its opposite ends and rotatably supported upon said base, said base being formed with a recess in its under face ac jacent said stems, crank arms keyed to the stems and loosely connected with said slides,
plates to cover said recesses in the base, and means for securing the slide in adjusted position.
2. A miter box'comprising a base, guide blocks rotatably mounted upon said base adj acent its opposite ends, slides mounted upon the front longitudinal edge of said base, and means for siniultaneously moving the slides together and away from each other, crank iarms embedded within the base and keyed at an end to said guides, the free end of said crank arms being bifurcated and projecting beyond the front longitudinal edge of the base, pins vertically disposed in the slides and adapted to be loosely engaged by the bifurcations of the extended ends of the arms so that the guides may be rotated, a segmental angle indicator pivoted to one end of the base and adapted to swing with respect thereto, a link connecting the indicator with the pin in one of said slides whereby the angle indicator is swung by the movement fof the slides. v 3. A miter box comprising a base, guides, stems projecting downwardly from the guides and rotatably supporting the same upon the base, said guides being provided with vertical slots therein at right angles to each other, said slots extending into said stems, a metallic casing covering the guides and stems and secured thereto, said casing being provided with slots to correspond with said before mentioned slots, and means for simultaneously rotating said guides.
