'To all whom it may concern Los Angeles and State of'California, have' invented a new and luseful Water-Grate, of which the followingis a specification..

The invention relates to systemsof hot water heating, and has for its principal object the provision of' awater grate which has alarge heating surface and which can be applied, or buit in, to anordinary gas range so that the flame of the gas range may be used for heating water and for other purposes simultaneously.

In the ordinary form of water heater using a gas Haine, the hot gases are allowed to escape after having heated the water, and these gases contain a considerable number of heat units. By' using the means disclosed in this application, these gases may be used for cooking purposes and for keeping foods, or other materials, in a warm condition.

Other objects and advantages will be evident hereinafter.

Referring to the drawings, which are. for` 4is a water tank supplied from an external source with cold water through a pipe 2 and having a hot water pipe 3 through which hot water may be drawn off. 4 is an ordinary gas range having burners 5, 6, 7 and,8 fed with gas from a pipe 9 as is common practice in gas ranges. A water grate 10, consisting of?l` a hot water head 11 and a cold waterhead 1Q, connected by suitable water legs'13, may be placed in the top of the rangeover the burners 5 and 6, approximately as illustrated in Fig. 1. A cold water inlet pipe 14 and a hot water outlet pipe 15 are provided communicating with the heads 12 and 11 respectively. The pipe 15 is connected by a union 16 to pipes 1'7 and 18 and .with the tank 1 near its upper end, and the cold Specification of Letters Patent.

The method of operation of.,our -invention is as follows: The heater being in place as shown in the drawings, the gas ,in either or both of the burners 5- and 6 is lighted, andthe heat therefrom, ascending, heats the Water in the water blegs 13, and passing upwardly mayn heat cookin utensils placed on the upper surface of t e legs are similar to those illus- 13, these legs not. only forming a heating medium but also forming a supporting medium upon which cooking utensils may be placed. 'This heatino` of the water in the legs 13 causes a circulatlon of Water throu h these legs, thus supplying hot water to t e tank 1 through the pipe -18 and drawing colder water from the bottom of the tank 1 through the pipe 20. There is thus a continual circulation of water downwardly through the tank 1 and upwardly through the legs 13 dur-in the time that these pipes are heated by the ame. A considerable economy results from this construction on account of the fact that in ordinary cooking operations it is not generally necessary to have all of thc burners going at full blastA at one time, and the burners 5 and 6 may be turned relatively low and yet be hot enough to supply plenty of heat for heating thewater in the tank 1 and in addition keeping the contents of utensils placed thereon .at a moderate heat.

The water grate 10 may be permanently installed in the range, or it may be made removable and used interchangeably with a standard top.

Various types of water grates have been developed in which the gas burner is simultaneously used to act upon cooking utensils or the like and heat Water in the grate. None of these, so far as we are aware, employ hot and cold water head connected by a plurality of water legs and none of them luse these legs as the actual, support for the utensils. v We claim as our invention:
