JGLT RAMMING-MACHNE.
T0 u?? /r/zom muy concern.'
Be it knovrn that I, EDGAR H. Muirronn, a citizen of the United States. residing at Plainfield. in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plolt Ramming- Machines, of which the following is a speciication. Y
My invention relates to molding machines, and has special reference to what are known .as jolting or jarring machines for Jforming sand molds.
One of the primary objects of my invention is to provideI a cheap, simple, and eilicient form of controlling device to govern the movement ot' such machines in their olting operation, and one which will he auto-` matic in operation and constructed of few and durable parts so that there Wilbe practically no danger of said device getting out of order. A
The foregoing, together with such other objects as may hereinafter appear or are incident to my invention l vattain hy i leans or a construction, a preferred embodiment of which l have shown in the accompanying drawings, Wherein i Figure l is a perspective view of a jolt ramining machine having applied thereto my improved controlling device; Figs. 2 and 8 are sectional views drawn somewhat in diagrammatic character for` purposes of illustration of the operation ofthe various parte7 Fig. 3 showing the controlling device in vertical instead of horizontal position.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 7 indicates the: cylinder in which the usual plunger 8 is mounted. The plunger carries the .mold table 8a and impacts in the usual manner. In the bottom of the cylinder isa port 9 by means offivhich the iiuid pressure is admitted into the cylinder to raise the plunger and exhausted out or the cylinder to permit the' plunger to drop'. laocated'in the cylinder Wall above the port 9 isan open ing 10.
The controlling device comprises the easing 1l having a valve chamber lla,V one end of which is in communication with the opening'lO hy means of aconnecting pipe 13, and the other end of which is in communication during the short period of ramming, with a source of constant airv pressure th The casing is provided Wi let port le to which live pressa duct-ed by means of the pipe l5; with a pair" Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led March 9, 1914.
against the lower face of the plunge:
sugli the i 4shifts the valyeto the left and. th-
tion is repeated. It kthecylinder' pressure is the port 9.
Mounted Within the casing is a valve 20,` one end of which is 'connected with a piston 2l and the other end with a piston rlhe 7g valve 20 controls the port 9a and the exhaust ports 16 and 16". The leaiage port 18 i-s-so proportioned relative zo ipe l2 that the face' of the piston that a relatively srn- "l pressure on the'p'iston 21 is required to shirt the valve to the left inasmuch as the pressure from the pipe l5, which normally is preferably in the neighborhood of from 5G 'to 6G. ponndsfae s against both the valve 20 and the piston The operation of the device is as follows: The pressure against the face of Ythe piston 2l moves thev valve 2O to the left so *aste* cover th'eexhaust port l''and the port 16 anduncover the port Qjat which time pres-- vsure' from the vpipe l5 and port le'i'lows through the port 9, pipe Quand port 9 into the hottom ofj the cylinder Where it. acts and nas raises theplunger. When' the plaag reached its raised orgtop position an covers the openingvlO,I the pressur cylinder flows-through the Aopening- EL connecting pipe liinto the oppo the casing Where it acts against the face of the -piston22 and shifts the valve 'to the right, uncovering theports 16d and i6 and covering the vport 922', The air is thus eX- hausted from the cylinder via the port 9,
kpipe 9',- port la, exhaust port it?, anden- `haust pipe 17. The plunger' then falls lay the action of gravity. The pressure re maining in the chamber to the'left'o the pist-on 22`exhausts throu` h the leakage port 19 and the pressure on piston 2l again will he a .L
iee-
vice is automatic in operation upon the'open'- img ,of ,the valve 12,V and thatit'is simplein velvet() `the Iright Vagainst the pressure on the piston 21, andthat this action may be obtained by' any one o fa number of ways, such for example, in the manner just'de'- scribed in which 'the pressure in the pipe 12 is less than that in the main supplypipe' '15, `orin'so proportioning the leakageports that the cylinder ressure willnot exhaust through the leakage port 19 as 'astas live pressure exhausts through 'the leakageport 18. The operation is controlled by the valve ,121L in the pipe'12which may also be used to throttle the pressure inthe Vpipe. Y12 .t o.a.1 iy
`in vertical position. In'this case Ipreferdesired degree. f l 1 'f It Willbe :obvious that vvthe controlling deconstruction wherebythe parts are not liable to get out of order.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the Vyalvefvvorking of a connecting pipe such as 9b, shown in- Fig. 2.l In the construction of Fig. 3 the' chamber of the valve 'casing extends above ing having a valve chamber extending yon i and below the port 9, The operation is the same. f lVhat I claim is 1. In combination with a jarring machine having a cylinder provided with a port therein and a plunger l*within said cylinder,
a valve casing connecting with said port the' valve chamber of which extends on both sides of said port, and a. valve in said casing for allowing vthe admission of operating; fluid to said cylinder through said port for raisingvsaid plunger and adapted to be re# versed by means of a piston at one end of and connected to said valve when said plunger has reached its raised position', thereby vcuttingl olf the admission of fluid to said, cylinder to allow the {iuid therein to exhaust through' said port and permit. said plunger to drop in said cylinder.
. 2. In combination with a jarring machine having a cylinder provided with a port .therein -with an opening above the same and a plunger within said cylinder, a valve casing connecting with said port andsaid openeach side ofA thelport, and a-valve in said port for raising said 'plunger and adapted.
'to be reversed by means of a piston at one endof and connected 'tosaid valve when f sai-d" plunger has reached its raised Yposition, by the uid passing through said opening, thereby cutting off the admission of fluid to said cylinder toallow the Hui-d therefin togexhaust through said port and permit said plunger tti-drop' in said cylinder.
3.l -In cbmbination with ajarring machine having a cylinder rovided ywith a 'port therein ywith an opening above said port and a plunger within said cylinder, a valve casing ,connecting with said port and opening having a valve chambervextending on each side o fsaid port, and a valve within said casing having a piston connected to an end thereof, said valve allowing the admission-of operating fluid tosaid cylinder through said port for raising said plunger and adapted" ,to be reversed when said plunger has reached its raised position by theA fiuid passing through said opening and to one end of said piston, thereby cutting' oiiz' the admission of Huidto said cylinderto allow the luid'therein to exhaustthrough saidport and permit said plunger to' drop in said cylinder.
4.' Incombination with a jarring machine having a cylinder provided with a port therein with an opening above Asaid port and a'plunger in said cylinder, a valve casing connecting with said port, and a valve in lsaid casing for allowing the admission of :operating fluid to saidcylinder through said port for raising said plunger and adapted to be reversed by differential pressure when the plunger uncovers said opening on its upward stroke;I thereby cuttingof the admission of fluid to said cylinder to allow4 the fluid therein to exhaust through said'port "and permit saidplunger to drop in said cylinder.
In testimony whereof I have'hereunto signed .my name in the presence of the two subscribed Witnesses.
Copies of this" patent may be obtained for five' cents' each, `by addressing 'the Commissioner of Patenti,
` Washington, 11C."
