To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER S. LISTER, a
citizen of the United States, resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Type Setting and Distributing Machines, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present invention, while it relates to printing machines of the kind now quite extensively employed in ofiices and like situations for printing in imitation of type-Writing, has more particular reg d to the provision of type setting and dis ibuting means for use in connection with such machines.
In what is perhaps the best known form of the above class of printing machines there are combined in a unitary structure a type holding member, a printing member, said members being respectively provided with parallel open ended grooves along which the type may be shoved, ing a permanent part of the machine and arranged to occupy such grooves and to be transferable between them from either member to the other, the type holding member being movable in order properly to cooperate with the printing member when it is desired to brin selected type-rows thereon into position w ere such transfer may be effected. In the machine under consideration such transfer of the type from one member to the other, involving as stated the movement of one member into a proper cooperative position with respect to the other, although some- ,times characterized as automatic, is in effect manual in its operation, the movement of the member and the subsequent transfer of the type, furthermore, being independent operations. The desirability of combining these operations and particularly of efl'ecting them through suitable key-board mechanism whereby the selective positioning of the typeholding member may be automatically effected by striking the proper key of such mechanism, has been recognized before, and one form 't' machine illustrative of this principle is sl own and claimed in a pending ap plication f Wiliam A. In the machine herewith illustrated, the printin member is shown as being in the form 0 a drum A permanently mounted in brackets or standards I) constituting a part of the gfneral machin frame B. This drum being t us a part of the unitary structure is designed to coiiperate, for the purpose of pg'inting, with a platen, likewise embodied the construction of the machine, but not here shown inasmuch as it constitutes no partlof the present invention and the arrangementthereof, as also of inking means for the drum, are both familiar features in the art of printing. It may here be further stated that it is a matter of general indifi'erence whether such printing drum be thus incorporated in the machine structure or not, as also whether it be a rotatable drum or not, the operation of the parts constituting the invention proper being identical whatever the form, or more of use, of the rinting member. Such member is provide whatever its form, with a plurality of transversely disposed, undercut grooves or channels (1 within which type of suitable eonformation may be received and held by reason of their engagement therewith as will be readily understood. In the course of the rotation of the drum these type holding channels or ways a are adapted to be brought successively into alinement with a type discharge point, by which term I shall designate the position of operative relation ship of a groove on the printing member with the type discharge, and transferring, mechanism, presently to be described. Before taking up, however, the construction of this mechanism it is convenient to consider the construction of the type case C from which type are designed to be transferred to the printing member, just described, and thence received again, in the operations of composing and distributing,respectively. As
has been indicated in connection with the general description of the figures of the drawings, this case is made up of two parts or members, an outermost supporting member C rigidly mounted in the machine frame B, and in effect a part thereof, and an inner vertically movable case 0 held in such outer case. In connection with each typegroove in the respective trays 0 there is provided an alined feed-rack, or bar, 0 disposed directly above the groove, the respective ends of each series of bars being slotted and surrounding rods 0 extending transversely of the end of the case, whereby such bars are supported. The conformation of the slots 0 is such that when any raclr is given an inward longitudinal movement, it will be lowered and then advanced horizontally. Springs 0" normallyretain the racks o in their outer raised positions. The effect of the movement just described is the engagement of the teeth 0 on the underside of the rack with a chaser 0", one of which is slidably carried in each of the channels or ways of the type case. Operation of a feedbar is designed to effect a sufficient n'lovcment of the particular chaser engaged thereby, to advance the line of type, against which the latter presses, one type space, or i in other words to discharge a type from the inner end of the roove. The disposition of the type thus discharged will be taken up in a subsequent paragraph. I

The combination of two members adapted to carry type in rows, one of said members being a type-supply member and the other a printing member, a shuttle member movable transversely of the rows of said typo-supply member and adapted to receive type from such rows, respectively, means normally positioning said shuttle member in alinemcnt with a relatively fixed dis charge point. and means adapted to discharge type from said shuttle to said printing member when the former is thus normally positioned. 7

The combination of two members 120 adapted to carry type in rows, one o t said members being a type-supply member. and the other a printing member, a shuttle member movable transversely of the rows of said type-supply member and adapted to receive 12% type from such rows, respectively, means normally positioning said shuttle member in -alinement with a relatively fixed discharge normally positioning said s said shuttle member .when the latter is moved into proper relation thereto, other means adapted automatically to discharge type from said shuttle to said printing member upon return of said shuttle member to its normal position, and key-board mechanism adapted to move said shuttle member into operative relation with any desired Y, row on said type-holding member and thereupon to actuate said transfer means.

The combination of two members adapted to carry type in rows, one of said members being a type-supply member and the other a printing member, a shuttle member movable transversely of the rows of said type-supply member and adapted toreceive type from such rows, res ectively, means normally positioning said shuttle member in alinement with a relatively fixed discharge point, said printing member being also movable to bring successive rows thereon into alinement with such point, and means adapted to transfer type from said printing member to said shuttle when the latter is thus normally positioned.

The combination of two members adapted to carry type in rows, one of said membe being a type-supply member and the th r a printing member, a shuttle member mo able transversely of the rows of said type-su ply member and adapted to receive type om such rows, respectively, means uttle member in almemqnt with a relatively fixed discharge point, said printing member being also movable to bring successive rows thereon into alinement with such point, and means adapted automatically to transfer type from said printing member to said shuttle when the latter is thus normally positioned.

The combination of two members adapted to carry type in rows, one of said members being, a type-supply member and the other a printing member, a shuttle member movable transversely of the rows of said type-supply member and adapted to receive type from such rows, respectively, means normally positioning said shuttle member in alinem ent with a relatively fixed discharge point, said printing member being also movable to bring successive rows there on into alinement with such point, means adapted to transfer type from said printing member to said shuttle when the latter is thus positioned, and other means adapted to discharge type from said shuttle into a selected type row of said type-holding member when said shuttle is moved into proper relation thereto.

The combination of two members adapted to carry type in rows, one of said members being a type-supply member and the other a printing member, a shuttle member movable transversely of the rows of said type-supply member and adapted to receive type from such rows, respectively, means normally positioning said shuttle member in alinement with a relatively fixed discharge point, said printing member being also movable to bring successive rows thereon into alinement with such point, means adapted to transfer type from said printing member to said shuttle when the latter is thus positioned, other means adapted to discharge type from said shuttle into a selected type row of said type-holding member when said shuttle is moved into proper relation thereto, and key-board mechanism adapted to move'said shuttle member into operative relation with any desired row on said typeholding member and thereupon to actuate said transfer means.
53. The combination of a type case arranged in a plurality of banks, a cooperating type eonveyer, means for distributing type from the come er to either bank, a keyboard cooperatab o with either bank, and a shift for determining the bank with which the keyboard is cooperating.
54. The combination of a series of parallel typeholders, a type carrier adapted to move across the ends of said typeholders from a central position in either direction to various positions and back, means for forcing type from the carrier to any of the holders, and a finger key for causing the said movement of the type carrier.
55. In a type distributing machine, the combination of a type case haying a plurality of typeholders,a type conveyeradapt ed to move across the end of said case, a common typeholder on the other side of said conveyer, means for feeding type in such common typeholder toward the conveyer and into it, and means for moving the conveyer.
