REVERSIBLE PLOW.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILHELM KOEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newkirk, in the county of Kay and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Flows, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention, which generally relates to improvements in reversible plows of that class adapted for being used as breaking plows, more particularly has reference to the form of reversible plow shown in my Patent No. 939,271 dated Nov. 9, 19 09, and my said invention primarily has for its pur pose to simplify the construction of my patented plow and to provide a plow of that kind in which the means for holding the mold board in position, relatively to the standard of the plow, is the more easily and positively manipulated and effective for its intended purpose.
Another object of my invention is to provide a plow of the type shown inmy patent referred to with an improved means of interlocking the reversible mold'board with the turning head, and lever'controlled adjusting devices including a rack and pawl mechanism for holding the said turning head and the rotatively mounted shaft to which it is attached to their several adjusted positions.
With other objects in view, that will here inafter appear my present invention embodies the peculiar construction and novel arrangement of parts, all of which will be hereinafter fully explained, specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, in

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my plow constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, parts beingbroken away and in section to the better illustrate their" cooperative connection. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plow shown in Fig. 1, as seen from the land I a turning shaft. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the lever actuated shifting sleeve that is mounted on the said shaft. Fig. 9 is a detail section on the line 99 on Fig. 2.

In the practical construction of my presout form of reversible plow, but a single combined beam and standard is used, instead of the doublebeam structure shown in my other patent referred to, and the said beam designated 1 has the lower end of its integral standard 2 formed with a horizontal 'bearing'3 that slightly inclines downwardly as is best shown in Fig. 2.
4 designates what I term a supplemental standard andthe same is in the nature of a thick vertically disposed plate provided with a pair of horizontal bearings 5-6 in line with the bearing 3 and adapted for receiving the shaft 7, the rear end of which extends beyond the rear bearing 6, and terminates in a reduced portion 60 to receive a snugly fit up against the rear edge of the standard 2 and its top portion is arc-shaped and provided with a set of front and a set of rear rack notches 4l.42 that cooperate I with the shifting lever devices presently again referred to.
' The lower front edge 43 of the body or plate 4 is inclined and tapered to receive the beveled edge 47 and bracket 48 (see Fig. 6) which features compel the interengagement of the'parts; to the lowermost edge thereof is secured a heel or drag member 5 which is preferably made. fast by a bolt 50that eX- tendstransversely through the front end of the heel and the plate 4 and a bolt 51 that projects longitudinally rearward from the lower rear edge of the plate 4, and which receives a nut 53 having a serrated washer, 54 for engaging the serrated portion of the rear edge 45 of the body plate 4.
The upper end of the supplemental standard 4is firmly attached to the standard 2 by bolts 9 and nuts 90, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, by reference to which it will be also noticed a shifting lever 10 is pivotally secured at its lower end just above the rear end of the drag member 5 (see Fig. 2), and the said lower end of the lever is bifurcated to straddle the sleeve 70, the latter having studs 7 0 for engaging the longitudinal slots 11 in the lever, as shown.
The upper end' of the lever 10 carries a hand controlled spring lever 12, whose lower end terminates in a detent 13 for engaging the rack portions 4l42 ofthe member 4,
the said lever. being so arranged that the detent interlocks with the rear notches 42 when the head 71 that carries the mold board is interlocked with the standard and with the front notches 41 when the said mold board and the head is shifted out of a locked connection with the standard for turning with the shaft 7.
The mold board head 71 in my present construction of plow, and which is best shown in detail in Fig. 6, consists of a coin caved plate or body portion 72 provided at one edge with a wing 73 that extends rearwardly at an acute angle to the body 72, the same forming, as it were, a land side holder, since it is this wing that alines the land side of the plow points when they are attached to the mold board and the head, as will presently more fully appear. At the rear, cen; trally thereof, and at the wing end, the head has an integral hub 78 provided with a non circular socket 74 for receiving the squared front end 7 5 of the shaft 7 locked with the head to turn therewith by the cross pin 76, asshown in the drawings.
It will be noticed by referring to Figs. 2 and 4, the front edge of the lower or bearing end of the standard 2 is tapered to form an interlocking or toe piece 21, the same being so shaped to thereby snugly fit within a like shaped notch 7? formed in the rear end of the hub 7 8 on the turning head (see Figs. 4 and 6). By reason of constructing the head 71 and the front' end of the standard as shown and described, it is obvious that by pulling the notched hub of the head back over the toe portion 21 of the standard, the said head 71 and the shaft 7 are held from turning and the said head to its adjusted po} sition, since the shifting of the head carrying shaft is effected by the lever, which latter is held to its shifted position, when the head is locked on the standard, by reason of its dc tent engaging the rack or notches 42. By arranging the parts in the manner stated, it will be seen the head with the mold board and attached plow .points can be readily changed from one side of the beam (Fig. 1) to the other side, to thereby change the direction in which the soil will be turned during the plowing operation, thus providing either a right or left hand breaking plow.
23 designates the mold board which in my present construction is double edged like the mold board in my patent referredto, it, in the present case being, however, bolted to the upper and lower ends of the head, (see Fig. 4) and since the latter, in my present board and the head is provided for without the need of the brace bolt shown in my patented plow construction. The plow points in my presentform of plow are secured at their land side or penetrating end by bolting to the extreme outer ends of the head (see Figs. 2 and 3) and at their mold board side they are secured by the bolts 26 to the mold board wing extension of the mold board, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4. I
In my patented plow referred to, the reversible mold board has a relatively fixed relation to the standard, that is, it hasno longitudinal movement with respect to the standard as is the case in my present type of plow; hence in the said patented construction, I employ a shiftable lockingdevice, composed of a pair of rods pendent from a hand lever pivotally secured to the main beam that pass down through fixed guides on the main beam, and when to their down position, they hold the mold board and the plows to their right or left hand swing position. Since my present plow themold board and the plow have a limited longitudinal movement, and which is utilized to effect the desired interlocking or separation of the mold board and the standard, the said looking devices are dispensed with, and the operation of turning over the mold board with the plow is rendered the more convenient, exp editious and positive, as all that is necessary to disconnect the mold board from the standard is to throw the hand lever forwardly until its detent engagesthe front notches 41. Since the mold board is held loose to turn freely with the shaft 7 when the lever is shifted as stated and since inhandlingthe plow it is essential that the mold board with the plows does not drop over after it is disengaged from the standard, I provide a simple and 1I16XP11S1V0 supplemental locking device in the nature of a stout finger rod 35 pivotally hung from a bracket cultivating rolling or hilly land, canbe utilized for nearly allpurposes for which plows are needed, and the mold board quickly and conveniently shifted to produce a right or left hand plow.
What I claim is 1. In a plow of the class described, the combination witha beam having apendent standard, and an auxiliary standard in the rear thereof; of a shaft rotatably mounted in the lower. ends of the said standards, and
longitudinally shiftable with respect to the standards, a mold board carrying member on one end of the shaft, said member and the standards having opposing interlocking faces adapted to engage each other when the shaft is shifted toits innermost part, and means for holding the said shaft and the mold board carrying member to its shifted position.
2. In a plow of the class described, the combination with a beam having a pendent standard, and an auxiliary standard in the rear thereof; of a shaft rotatably mounted in the lower ends of the said standards; and longitudinally shiftable with respect to the standards, a mold board carrying member on one end of the shaft, said member and the standards having opposing interlocking faces adapted to engage each other when the shaft is shifted to its innermost part, means for holding the said shaft and the said member to its shifted position, and means for.
holding the shaft to either of its longitudinally shifted positions, said means including a pivotedlever having a movable connection with the shaft and rack and detent devices for holding the lever to either of its shifted positions.
3. In a plow of the class described, the combination with a beam having a pendent standard, and an auxiliary standard in the rear thereof; of a shaft rotatably mounted in the lower ends of the said standards and longitudinally shiftable with respect to the standards, a mold board carrying member on one end of the shaft, said member and the standards having opposing interlocking faces adapted to engage each other when the shaft is shifted to its innermost part, means for holding the said shaft and the said member to its shifted position, means for holding the shaft to either of its longitudinally shifted positions, said means including a pivoted lever having a movable connection with the shaft and rack and detent devices for holding the lever to either of its shifted positions, and other means for holding the mold board and its carrying member and shaft from turning when the said carrying member is shifted out of a locked engagement with the standard.
4. In a plow of the class described, the combination with a beam having a pendent standard, and an auxiliary standard in the rear thereof; of ashaft rotatably mounted in the lower ends of the said standards and longitudinally shiftable with respect to the standards, a mold board carrying member on one end of the shaft, said head and the standard having opposing interlocking faces ada ted to engage each other when the shaft is shifted to; its innermost part, means for holding the said shaft and the carrying member to its shifted position,"means for holding the shaft to either of its longitudinally shifted positions, said means including a pivoted lever having a movable connection with the shaft,rack and detent devices for-holding the lever to either of its shifted positions, other means for holding the mold board and its carrying member and shaft from turning when the said head member is shifted out of a locked. engagement With the standard, said means consisting of I a member freely hung from the plow beam to drop down between the crotch end of the uppermost plow secured on the mold board.
5. In a plow construction, the combination with a beam, a standard connected with the beam whose front edge terminates in a toelike projection, a shaft rotatably mounted in the standard and having longitudinal movement in its bearings, a mold board carrying member fixedly mounted on the outer end of the shaft to move therewith, said carrying member having a rearwardly extended wing and a hub having a socket and notched end, the standard having a toeportion shaped to interlock with the said notched end when the shaft is moved to its rearmost limit, a double ended mold board mounted on the said carrying member to turn therewith, plow shares connected to the said mold board and the wings of the head; a lever and pawl,.and ratchet devices cooperating therevvith for shifting the shaft and its head into and out of locked engagement with the standard, and a supplemental locking device loosely engaging the uppermost of the plow shares for holding the mold board and its carrying member from turning when at the outer or released position.
