BOTTLE-WASHING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1914.
Application filed March 10, 1913. Serial No. 753,212.
To all '1v/mm it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Emi. LINDERMF., a citizen of the United. States of America, residing at l.)hiladclphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful linprovements in Bot.tle\Vasl1ing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to machines for cleaning bottles, jars, and similar articles; and it consists generally of the novel construction and arrangement of the several nirts, and their specific combination, as will e. hereinafter described in this specification. and brietly stated in the claims.
The chiet` object, of the invention is to simplify and cheapeu the oost of production of this class of machines without impairing their effectiveness in operation.
Other objects of the invention will become ap )arent upon a complete disclosure thereof.
n the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved hot.tle-washer, Fig. S2, a horizontal sectional view taken on line 2--2 Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a central vertical section, some of the parts being shown in full lines.
Referring to the several views, the numeral 1 indicates the base provided with suitable supports 2, 3, and 4, in which the drive-shaft ."i is suitably journaled, the supports 2 and 3 being integral in one casting. l`he shaft, is provided with the usual band pulleys, one. of which is loose on the. shaft.
Connected with the support Q-li, by a web, is a support. T which is provided with an aperture tl tluough which passes the internal brash carrying tubular shaft t), surrounded, for a greater portion of its length, h v a sleeve provided at its upper end with a bottle or jar support ll, in which is contained a llexible seat l2, preferably ruhber, to receive the mouth of the bottle or jar. 'lhe ln'ush-carrying shaft. is provided at its lower end with a beveled gear wheel l?) which is in mesh with a similar gearwheel 14 mounted on the drive-shaft 5. The bottle su porting sleeve is provided at its lower ciu with a. cross-bar lo having extensions it', to each of which is attached one end of a cord or chain li', the other end of cach cord or chain passing over a pulley 18, secured to the underside. of the support. t5, and provided with a eounter-lnllanee weight '19. The bottle supporting sleeve is also provided with a cross-bar 20, which serves as a stop to limit the upward movement of said sleeve, the two bars being connected together by rods 21, 21. i
Journaled in suitable bearings in supports 3 and tl is a shaft 9.2, provided at its lower end with ay beveled gear-wheel 23 in mesh with a similar gear wheel Q-l mounted on the drive-shaft 5, and at its upper end with a pinion 25 in mesh with a gear-wheel 26 loosely mounted on the bottle supporting sleeve.
Situated below the gear-wheel QG is a circular rack-bar Q7, which is secured in position to the support (i by screws or bolt 28, as shown in Fig. 3. Passing through the gearwheel Qt, near its periphery, is a brushshaft 2t) and secured to the lower end of said shaft is a pinion B0 which meshes with and travels around said rack-bar as the gearwheel 26 revolves. Also carried by the gearwheel 26 is a brush-shaft 3l, the two brushes bein(r adapted to clean the outer surface of the. iiottle or jar, the brush-shaft 29 receiving a rotation independent of the rotation received by the gear-wheel 26, the upper end of the brush-shaft 29 being loosely 1eurnaled in a cross-bar BQ which connects the two shafts, 2t) and 31, together.
J ournaled on a stud-bolt 33, screwed into the support 3, is a gear-wheel 34 in mesh with a pinion 35 mounted on the drive-shaft Ilceentrically secured to the gear-wheel 34 is a jointed pitman titi, the free. end ot' which is operative through arms 37, 3T ot' a bracket 3S slidable ou a sha l't Ill) secured to the support t and being provided with an adjustable collar titl between the pivoted joint and its upper end to engage the lowermost arm Iii', on the upper stroke of the pitman to lift partI 41, a collar t0 being,r adjustable on said shaft 89 to limit the downward movement of the bracket. 'l'he bracket is provided with an arm 41, the outer end ot' which is provided with a slidable rod 4Q carryingr at its lower end a rubber clamp 42S adapted to engage the bottom of the bottle, the rod being held in adjusted position by screw 44. The upper end of the pitman is provided with a collar -l-5, between which and the arm 3T is a coil spring 4G which serves to keep the arm 41, and clamp-rod 42 pressed downwardly with a yielding pressure. The supports 2 and 3 are provided with suitable ollinp' ducts 4i', and the support 4 with a suitable screw-threaded aperture 48 to receive an oil-cup, not shown.
In the operation of the machine described the shaft 5 is driven by a belt (not shown) which passes over the pulleys on said shaft, the pinlon 235 rotates the gear 34 causing the pitman which is eceentrically mounted on said gear to move upward, on the upward movement of said pitman the collar 3G engages the lower arm 3T ot the bracket B8 raising the arm 4t on bracket 3S and the lo clump arm 42 a distance sulicieut to allow a bottle to be placed upon its seat in the bottle support. 'l` .e spring t6 serves to keep arm il and clamp l2 pressed downwardly with a `vielding prcsure. ABeveled gear 14 rotates l5 the hollow brush carrying shaft E) over the upper end ot' which the bottle is placed, and beveled gear "2l rotates shaft 2Q the upper end oi which is provided witlrpinion 25 meshing with gear 26 loosely mounted on the bottle support to revolve the brushes around the bottle to be cleaned. rl`he pinion mounted upon the lower end of brush shaft Q9 which passes through gear 2G meshes with a circular rack secured to support (3 causing l5 the brush shaft to rotate upon its axis during the rotation of gear QG. During the cleansing operation water is supplied to the interior o the bottle, the interior brush revolved and the outer brushes are given a movement around the bottle and one of them a planetary movement. It will be obvious that any suitable means may be em loyed to su ply a stream of water through t ie tubular s lait 9 to the interior of the bottle.
Ilavin f thus fully described my invention what I c aim is- 1. A bottle cleaner having in combination, a base, upright supports, a drive shaft a counter-lmlanced bottle support, a rotatable shaft provided with a pilnon at its upper end, a hollow rotatable shaft carrying an internal brush and having a gear wheel loosely mounted thereon, a series of brushes mounted on said ear, the shaft of one of the brushes extending through said gear and provided with a pinion, a circular rack with which said pinion meshes, whereby a rotary movement is imparted to one of said brushesl during the revolution of the brushes around the bottle, an adjustably supported bracket t carrying an arm, an adjustable bottle clamping rod mounted in said arm, and means for creating a `yielding pressure upon the arm carrying the clamp rod.
2. A bottle cleaner having, in combination. a counter-lailanced bottle support, a rotaia ble brush for cleaning the interior surface ol' the bottle, a drive shaft, means for rotating the brush, a gear wheel, a jointed pitman pivotally attached to said gear wheel, an ad- Justably supported bracket havinfY an 1nwardly extendin f arm carrying a c amp rod adjustably slidablc therein, and outwardly extending arms provided with openings through which the pitman operates, an adjustable collar below the lower outwardly extending arm, a collar on the upper extremity of said pitman, and a spring surrounding the pit-man between the uppermost ex tending arm and collar for creating a yielding pressure upon the arm carrying the clamping rod.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witmesses.
EMIL LINDERME.
