' Beit known that I, WILLIAM H. Hnnnsr,
and useful Improvements in Means Cleaning and Turning by declare l and exact -10 UNITED s;i nN Fn1oE.
WILLIAM nanny rrnnnsir, or DEDHAM, massnonusn'r'rs.
mnans non CLEANING AND TURNING BAGS.
citizen, of the United States, residing at Dedham, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain nfew or Bags; and I do herethe following to be a full, clear, description of the invention, such as. will enable others skilled'in the a'rt'to which it appertains to make and .use the same.- I
- This invention relates to means for cleaning and turning bags.
The'object is to provide a device of simple construction which will do the work of more-elaborate machines, which shall be efficient in performing the turning operation, and whichwill then thoroughly clean the bag, the air having access to all portions of the latter while it is being held by suction in an expanded form against walls of screenlike formation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter set forth and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the construction in side elevation, with parts in section. Figs. 2 and 3 show details of the device.
In carrying out my invention, I employ .a tubular member 10 which has connection with an exhaust fan 15 mounted on any suitable supporting structure 16. The duct constituting the dust outlet from the fan is shown at 17.
It is obvious that the member 10, which will be termed a suction pipe, may be 10- cated in any manner desired. but it is found convenient to have it depend vertically, and
terminate at a convenient distance above the floor, so that an operator may readily place the bags to be turned and cleaned, at the mouth of the pipe.
Especial importance is attached to the means for retaining the bag in a suitable position to be cleaned after it has been placed at the mouth of the pipe and turned by suction while the edges are being'held by the operator against the edge of the pipe.
A cylindrical screen of suitable mesh is placed within pipe 10, and provides an annular air space 18 between the two members.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
this air space having direct communication with a larger air chamber 19 beyond the end of the screen, the latter being indicated .by the number 20. In order to hold the screen suitably spaced from pipe 10, spacing members 21 are provided, of such character as to" admit of the free passageof the air. It will be noticed that the suction is direct between all portions of the annular air space 18 and-the exhaust device.
In order that the screen may be removed for any purpose, as for instance to permit the substitution of a screen of another size, tube 10 is provided with a telescoping collar member 22 which is secured in position by devices 23. This collar is madeto taper and is provided with a rolled edge 24:.
Screen member 20 is secured to collar 22. so that whenthe latter is removed the screen may be withdrawn at the same time.
Itwill be observed that the main portion of pipe 10 is of uniform cross section and that there are. no obstructions to engage the screen spacing members when they pass the mouth of the pipe.
The end portion 25 of screen 20 is of larger mesh and retains the bag, preventing it from. being drawn into the fan casing. Screens of difl'erent mesh and of difierent cross section may be employed.
The device contains no valves, nor any moving parts other than the fan, the latter operating continuously to produce constant suction suflicient for the purpose, and for whipping the sides of the bag against the screen. X
If the bag is right side out at the beginning, it is first turned, then cleaned, the cleaning operation beginning during the turning operation, and is then again turned to bring the bag to the right side. In the event that the user has turned the bag in emptying it, the first turning in the machine leaves the bag right side out, and it is cleaned in that position, and while being turned.
. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a bag cleaning Patented July 21, 1914.

In a bag cleaning device, a duct, meansv for partially exhausting air therefrom, a tnbular member Within the duct and provided with openings for the passage of any and means for spacing the said member and the sides of a bag received thereby from the walls ofthe duct, said means last mentioned beingslidable With reference to the Walls.
