MICHAEL ZI. CONNERTON, OF DANVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SWITCH-CHAIR.
Application led November 4, 1913.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. CONNER- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Boyle and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Switch- Chairs, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention is an improved joint and ller block for use in a standard railroad switch to effect a solid connection between the heel of the switch and the stock rail, at the joint where the switch point is connected to the main track rail or lead rail, to hold the track at the heel of the switch to the proper gage and prevent spreading and also prevent the rail from cutting into the ties, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter describedand claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a plan of the heelportion of a standard railroad switch provided with a joint and filler block constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sec tional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a--a of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same on the plane indicated by the line b-ZJ of Fig. 1.
For the purposes of this specification, I show a main track or lead rail at 1 and a Stock or switch rail at 2. In accordance with my invention, I provide a supporting plate 3 which is arranged under the said rails at the joint, and is provided with a longitudinal wedge-shaped wall 4 on its upper side, which separates and abuts against the opposing base flanges 5-6 of the said rails. This wall is wedge-shaped longitudinally, its sides converging in one direction, as shown in Fig. 1, and indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, and the base plate 3 is also correspondingly shaped and is narrower at one end than at the other. The plate is also provided with web walls 7 8 which con* verge in one direction and bea-r respectively against the opposing webs of the rails 1 2 and are provided with base portions 9-10, respectively, which overhang and bear on the up er sides of the inner base flanges of the rai s and are formed integrally with and connect the said web walls to the said wall Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jury 21, 1914..
Serial No. 799,172.
4, the plate, with its wall 4, web walls 7 8 and base portions 9-10 being integral and being preferably rolled. The plate 3 bears on the upper sides of the cross ties and is secured thereto by means of suitable spikes and serves to prevent the rails from cutting into the ties.
On the outer sides of the rails are fish plates 11 which are of the usual construction and which are secured to the web walls of the joint and filler block, and are also secured to the respective rails by means of suitable bolts, such as indicated at 12 in Figs. 3 and 4.
It will be understood that my improved joint and filler block effects a solid connection between the heel of the switch and the stock rail, at. the joint where the switch point is connected to the main track rail or lead rail, serves to hold the track at the heel of the switch to the proper gage and prevents spreading of the rails in addition to preventing the rails from cutting into the ties.
I claim:-
1. As an article of manufacture a joint and filler block comprising a supporting plate for arrangement under the rails of a railway switch at the joint and provided on its upper side at its center with an integral longitudinal wedge shaped wall to separate and abut against the opposing base flanges of the rails and also provided with integral web walls converging in the same direction as the sides of the first-named wall, said web walls serving to bear against the opposling webs of the rails and having base portions to overhang the inner base flanges of the rails, the side portions of said plate being unobstructed and extending outwardly in opposite directions from said wedge shaped wall.
2. In combination with the lead and stock rails of a railway switch, a joint and liller block comprising a supporting plate arranged under said rails at the oint and provided with an integral longitudinal wedge shaped wall on its upper side separating and abutting against the opposing base Iianges of the rai s and also provided with integral web walls converging in one direction, bearing against the opposing webs of said rails and having base portions overhanging the inner base flanges of the rails and connecting the said Web Walls to the irst-named and filler blocks, the rails and sh plates t0- gether. 10
In testimony whereof I afx my signature Walls, the side portions of said plate being in r plesenceof; two Witnesses.
y5 unobstructed and extendingoutwardly beyond the outer sides of the said rails, fish plates on theiouter sides of said rails and .1 bolts connecting the Web Walls of the joint MICHAEL J. GONNERTGN. IVitnesses:
