Description

J. M. TWEITv n-J. O. WISE. WASHING MACHINE. APPLIUATIQILIILBD HAY 5, 1911.
Jin-amid: firm UNITED STATJLTENT carica- JACOB M. TWEIT AND JEREMIAH 0. WISE, OF ERICSON, MONTANA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB M. Twnrr and Jn'REMIAH O. WISE, citizens of the United States, residing at Ericson, in the county of Custer and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vashing-Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in washing machines of that class adapted to be used in connection with an ordinary Wash-tub, boiler and the like.
The object of this invention is to provide roller beaters for a machine of this character to take the place of paddles now in use and of cheap and simple construction and adapted to be operated with a minimum amount of power and which in' their operation will be capable of thoroughl eradicating the dirt from the clothes wit out the necessity of any extreme agitation calculated to tear or otherwise injure the garments.
With these and other objects of the inven tion in view it consists of a novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter described in the following description and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a section of one form of a washing machine withthe improved roller applied, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Referring now to one form of the washing machine to which our improved roller is applied as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, 1 designates a tub which may be of any ordinary construction such as a wash-tub, boiler or the like. Upon the tub 1 is mounted a circular cover 2 which is secured in position upon the tub by means of locks 3. The center of the cover is provided with a circular openin 4 which is surrounded by a metallic bushing 5 through which is passed a vertical agitator shaft 6, the lower portion of which is square in cross section as at 7 and having four arched arms 8 at right an- Speccation of Letters Patent.

gles to each other and between end of said arms and the square portion 7 are supported the improved rollers 9. These arms 8 are made integral with and extend from the square portion 7 of shaft 2 and then curved outwardly as at 11 and downwardly as at 12 and on the inner face adjacent the lower end of the portion 12 is formed a recess 13. Formed in the faces of the said squared portion adjacent the lower ends thereof are longitudinal recesses 14. The-se recesses are closed at their lower ends by means of a plate 15 which is secured to the shaft 6 by means of a screw 17 the ai rangement of the recesses 14 and the plate 15 permit the ready assembling of the device or the disassembling thereof. Mounted upon the ends of the rollers 9 are gudgeons 18 which are mounted in the said recesses 13 and 14. These rollers may be easily removed and new ones replaced in case they become broken by removing the plate l5 on the end of the shaft 6. K
The upper end of the shaft 6 is supported in a bearing 2O of a standard 19 formed on the cover 2. 22 represents asmall pinion fast upon the shaft and rotating therewith and mounted upon the cover 2 is a large gear 23 meshing with gear 22 and having a handle 24 for operating the same.'
Having described our invention and what we desire to obtain by Letters Patent is:
In a washing machine the combination with a tub of a rotatable shaft having an angular lower end disposed in spaced relation to the `bottom wall of the tub and centrally of the side walls of the tub, the lower end of said shaft having its faces provided with longitudinal recesses open at their lower` ends, a plurality of arms extending laterally from the respective faces of the angular end of said shaft andformed integral therewith, the extremities of the arms and the lower end of the shaft being disposed in a common plane, said extremities each formed with a bearing, cylindrical rollers provided with suction cups longitudinally thereof, trunnions projecting from the ends of said rollers and respectively disposed in the bearings and recesses, said cylindrical rollers be- In @estimony whereof We affix our signa ing normally disposed in a horizontal plane tures 1n presence of two wltnesses. with relation tothe shaft, and a rectangular JACOB M. TWEIT.
plate removably secured to the lower end JEREMIAH O. WISE. 5 of the shaft for closing allv of the recesses Vllitnesses:
forming a bearing for the trunnions of the THos. J. DQLAN, rollers. L.
