To all whom it may concern f Be it known that I, HELMERULLENSAKER,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hatton, in the countyr of Traill and State .z of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprocket-v W'heels, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in sprocket wheels and has relation more particularly to a deviceofthis general character especially designed and adaptedl for use in connection with motor vehicles and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this general character having means of a novel and improved character whereby the driving chain adapted to pass around the wheel is relieved of all jerking influences.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully dened in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, T. will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a sprocket wheel constructed in accordance with my invention, the axle to which it is shown applied being indicated in section; Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken through Fig. 1 with the supporting axle being shown in yfragment and in elevation; and Fig. 3 is an `enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating certain details of the invention, as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the axle or bearing for my improved wheel and, as herein illustrated, such wheel comprises aplurality of sections adapted to be superimposed one upon the other, the intermediate section 2 being of greater diameter than the outer sections 3 and being provided on its periphery with conventional teeth 4: with which the usual sprocket chain is adapted to coact. preferably diametri- The sections 2 and 3 `are provided, when ',assembled, withalining openings, thel open- .ing-of one of the outer sections being provided with the inwardly directed sleeve or barrel 10 adapted to project through the openings of the remaining sections the free end portion of such section being adapted to be engaged by a suitable clamping member, indicated at 11, for holding the sections in operative relation, such clamping -means 11 being herein sho-wn as a nut or bur in threaded engagement with the free extremity of the sleeve or barrel 10.
The axle or bearing 1 is adapted to project through the sleeve or barrel 10 and such sleeve is suitably keyed thereto in any ordinary or preferred manner. As this particular arrangement forms no part of my invention in its details, it is believed to be unnecessary that detail thereof be recited.
The intermediate section 2 is adapted to have movement about the sleeve l1() independently of the outer sections 3 but the tension of the helical springs 7 is such as to cause the intermediate section 2 to rotate normally in synchronism with the outer sections 3, but should there be any undue strain or jerk imposed upon the intermediate section it will be readily perceived that such excessive strain will be compensated for by the independent movement of such intermediate section 2 which will be permitted by the springs 7 as is thought to be clearly obvious. While it may be omitted, I find it of advantage to provide the periphery of the intermediate section with the oppositely directed flanges 12 for the chain to rest upon when passing therearound.
From the. foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a sprocket wheel constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature andis particularly ion Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility With which it may be applied and by reason of the cushioning qualities possessed thereby and it Will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising three sections, the intermediate section being of greater diameter than the outer sections and having its periphery provided with chain engaging teeth and provided with lateral projecting flanges, the outer sections being connected one to the other and the intermediate section being capable of rotation independently of the outer sections, the outer sections being provided with inwardly directed annular ianges having their inner faces grooved and adapted to contact with the adjacent face of the intermediate section, the intermediate section having a projection on each face thereof adapted to extend Within the groove of the adjacent outer section, such projec tions being diametrically opposed, and an expansible member positioned Within the groove ofeach of the outer sections, the eX tremities of such member being in contact With the projection of the intermediate sec tion disposed in such groove.
