Il im I En A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON B. CREIGI-ITON, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
VALVE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NnLsoN B. Clinici-HON,
av citizen of the United States, and a resident.
of the city of New York, Maspeth, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have inventeda new and Improved Valve, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved valve for use` in pipe lines conveying gas, liquids, or other fluids from one place to another, and arranged to normally hold the valve in open position for the passage of the fluid and to allow of releasing` the valve from a distant point whenever it is desired to close the valve and to permit the valve to close automatically in case of fire and to hold it locked in closed position.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a spring pressed lever which is normally held in raised position by the kholding means above mentioned, and an automatic locking device for locking the lever in lowered position after its release from the said holding` means and after the valve has been closed.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicatek corresponding parts in all the views.
' Figure 1 is a sectional -'side elevation of the valve'in open position; Fig. Q is a similar view of the same in closed position; Fig. 3 is an end View of the valve in open position; Fig. 4t is a cross section of the same in closed position; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the actuating lever for thevalve.
The valve body A is provided with an inlet B, an outlet C, a valve seat D intermediate the said inlet `B and the outlet C, and a separate chamber E closed by a cap F having a removable screw plug G in the top. kOn the valve seatv D is adapted to be seated a valve H, the seat D and the valve H being shown in the form of agate and gatel valve, but I do not limit myself to this particular form of a valve. The valve H is mounted yto slide up and down on suitable guideways H arranged on the inside of the body A and eX- tending within the separate chamber E so that when the valve H is in its normal open position it extends up in'to the separate chamber E, as plainly indicated in Fig. l. The valve H is provided on top. with a stem H2 pivotally connected with the free end of Specification ofLette'rs Patent.
Application filed April 16, 1912.

Serial No. 691,114.
a lever I arranged within the chamber E and fulcrumed at I in the said chamber.
lThe lever I is provided with a spring seat I2,
on `which is seated the lower end of a coil spring J extending up inthe cap F and abutting against the under side of the plug Gr.
i When the lever I and with it the valve H are of, as plainly indicated in Fig. l. One outer end of the rock shaft L is provided'with an annular shoulder L and a collar L2 and on the shoulder L ts the apertured end N of an arm N adapted to be secured to the said shoulder and the collar L2 by a solder of a low fusing point. The free end of the arm N rests against an abutment O in the form of a linlr pivoted at O on the cap F, and the arm N is connected with a rod P leading to a distant point to permit an operator to impart a swinging motion to the arm N for rocking the shaft L so as to move the lug K out from under the abutment I3 thus releasing the lever I and allowing the spring J to swing the lever downward -to move the valve H to its seat. In case of a fire the heat melts the fusible solder connecting the arm N with the rock shaft L so that the latter is released and is free to turn to permit the lever I to swing downward into closed position by the action of the spring J thus seating the valve H. The locking bolt Q is mounted to slide in a bolt chamber Rformed on the outside of the chamber E and closed at its outer end by a screw cap S (see Fig. 4l). A spring T is arranged within the chamber R and presses the bolt Q inward so that when the lever I swings downward it engages the beveled end thereof and forces the bolt outward against the tension of the spring T. When the lever I has passed the inner beveled end of the bolt Q then the tainaccess to the bolt Q, the-outer end Q of which projects beyond the chamber R and is Aprovided with an. opening for engagement by a tool to permit of drafvving the bolt outward Whenever itis desired to swing the lever l upward into normal position for reengageinent by the lug K to hold the lever in the raised position. f Y The rock shaft L is provided with a conical collar L3 seated on a seat E formed on a screw plug E2 forming part oit' the sepa'- ratechamber E (see Fig. ll), and the shaft' L is pressed on by a: spring U to hold the coller L3 iirmly to its seat E to .preventv leal;- age of fluid through the plug E2, The detail construction ofthe rock shaft and arms N andl link O is practically 4the same asthe similar devices disclosed in the Letters Paty ent of the United States, granted to myself andl Samuel Block" on June 4,1912, andnum' ber'ea 1,028,681-and 1,028,682;
Having thus described my invention, `l claim asv new and desire to secureby Letters Patent l. A device of the lclass described, comyprising afvalve, a spring-pressed-lever for actuating the valve,supporting means forr normally holding: the lever raised, and an automatic lockingk device for locking the lever in place after being released from the said supporting means and: after the valve has moved into closed position, consisting of a boltk arranged in the path of movement of the'lever.` i
