DUTTING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14', 1914.
Application filed August 9,1913. Serial No. 783,937.
T'O'aZZ whom it may concern 1 Be it known that we, Gnoncn PARKIN- SON and RALPILS. TOMPKINS, both citizens of the United States, and residentsof Beacon City, in the county of Dutchess and State of New. York, have invented a new and ll'nproved Cuttingl-ittaclnnent for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new. and improved cutting attachment. for sewing machines, more especially designed for accurately cutting the welt on the brim of a felt hat during the time. the welt is stitched in place andwhilea stifiening wire may be inserted in the welt.
In order to accomplish the desired. result, use is madeof a cutter reciprocating with the needle bar of a sewing machine, thecutting edge of the cutter being spaced from the sewing needle and being arranged approximately parallel to the line of feeding the material: v 1
A practical. embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
1 Figure 1 iswa sectional front elevation of the sewing machine provided with two nee-- dlos and with the cutting attachment arranged for cutting off both the inner and outer edges of the welt; Fig. 2 is a side ele- ,vaticn of thesame Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same; Fig. i is a sectional front. ole vation. of a sewing machine provided with a single needle and with the cutting attachment arranged for cutting off the inner edge only of the welt Fig. is a=plan view of a portion of a .felt hat brim provided with a welt double-stitched and trimmed at both the outer and inner edges; Fig. 6 is a similar view of a portion of a felt hat brim provided with a single-stitched welt trimmed along the inner edge only; Fig. 7 is a sectional side ele vation of the briin material prior to turning over the'welt; Fig: 8 is a similar viewof the same with the material doubled up to form the welt; Fig. 9 isa similar view of the same with the welt doublerstitched and with the outer and inner edges trimmed; and Fig. 10 is a similar view showing the welt single-stitched with the inner edge only trimmed.
The sewing machine on which the improvement is. shown applied in Figsl, 2 and 3 is provided with the usual. reciprocating needle bar A which is secured a carrier or clamp B by the use of a: suitable set screw B or other fastening. device. On the carrier 13 are secured the spaced needles C, C by the useof set. screws C and on the said carrier B are adjustably secured cutters D, D
by the use of setscrews E. The cutters D,
D" are arranged on the opposite sides of the two needles G, C.. =.The cutters D, D are adapted to -pass through slots F, F arranged in a presser foot F of otherwise usual c mstruction'. A feedbar H is adapted to feed the brim. material in a transverse directionand a needle plate G is provided having the-usual openings for the passage of the needles C, C and the feed bar H, and also having a slot G inuvertical alinement with the slot F for the passage of the cutter D1. An adjustable gage l is arranged for guiding the material while forming the welt. The brim J is provided with a portion J doubled over and fastened in place by two rows of stitches J J while feeding the brim J transverselyunder the needles C, C by .theuse. of the feed bar H. V
It will benoticed that the cutters. D, D have theircutting edges arranged approximately parallel to the line of movement of the feed barl l, and the said cutting edges are on different levels thatwhen the needle bar A isin lowermost position-the cutting edge of the cutter D has passed through the portion J while the cutting edge of the other. cutter D has passed through both thicknesses atthe'outer edge of the brim, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1, 5 9.1 From the foregoing it will be seen that the doubled-up portion J fastened bytwo rows of .stitch'esJ J in place and thedoubled-up outer edge of the welt is accuratelytrimmed by the cutter D,
wh-iloonly the inner edge of the doubled-ii portion J of the welt is trimmed without dangerof cutting into the brim. J itself.
When it is desired to provide the brim J G with a welt J 7 fastened in place by a single row of stitches J and trimming the inner edge J of the welt J then'use is made of but one needle C and the cutter D, as shown ;in Fig. 4;- In this case the needle C- forms ,a single row of stitches J while feeding the material transversely by the feed bar H and at the same time the cutter D trims off the inner edge J of the welt J so as to give a fine finish to this inner edge of the welt.
In the construction disclosed in Fig. 4, the ordinary needle plate G can be used as the cutter D does not pass with its cutting edge lower down than the top surface of the brim J 6 at the time the needle bar A. reaches its lowermost position.
By reference to Fig. 2, it will be noticed that the cutting edge of the cutters D and D is of considerable length and preferably somewhat in excess of the throw of the feed bar H to insure a continuous cutting of the welt material, as above explained.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent:

The combination of a sewing machine and a cutting attachment, the sewing machine having a reciprocating needle bar carrying spaced sewing needles and a feed bar for feeding the doubled-up brim of a felt hat in a transverse direction, the said cutting attachment havlng two cutters reciprocating with the said needle bar, the
I different horizontal planes.
cutters havin cutting edges arranged in ting attachment having two cutters reciproeating with the said needle bar and arranged on opposlte sides of the said needles,
the cutters having cutting edges extending approximately parallel to the line of move ment ofthe said feed bar, the said cutting edges being arranged in different horizontal planes, and the cutting edge of one of the cutters cutting through the thickness of the upper doubled-up portion of the brim at'the time the needle bar is in its lowermost position. I
3. The combination of a sewing machine and a cuttingattachment, the sewing machine having a reciprocating needle bar carrying spaced needles, and a feed bar for feeding the doubled-up brim of a'felt hat in a transverse direction, the said cutting attachment having two cutters reciprocating with the said needle bar and arranged on opposite sides of the said needles, the cutters having cutting edges extending approximately parallel to the line of movement of the said feed bar, the said cutting edges being arranged in diflerent horizontal planes :the needle bar is in its lowermost position,
and the cutting edge of the other cutter cutting through the doubled-up brim, atflthe outer edge thereof and at a time the needle bar is in lowermost position. a 1
V 4. In a sewlng machlne, the combination of a reciprocating needlebar, a reciprocating cutter carried by the needle bar and arranged to one side of the sewing needle and spaced therefrom, a presser foot having a slot for the passage of the said cutter-,a
needle plate, and a'feed bar for feeding the doubled up brim of a felt hat, transversely of the needle plate, the length of the cut the throw of the feed banthe said cutting edge being spaced from the needle plate a distance equal to the thickness of the brim,
at the time the needle bar reaches its lower- 6. In a sewing machine, the combination,
ting edge of'said cutter being in excess of;
of a reciprocating needle bar, a cutter attached to the needle bar to one side of the sewing needle, a presserfoot having a slot for the passage of the said cutter, a needle plate, and a feed bar for feeding the ma terial, the cutting edge of said cutter e xtending approximately parallel to the line of feeding, said parts being so, arranged relative to each other that the'cutting edge of said cutter is spaced from the needle plate when the needle bar reaches its lower- 2 est position. H
7. In a sewing machine, the combination of a reciprocating needle barprovidedwith a pair of spaced needles, a feed bar, a presser foot having two slots, a needle plate having a slot in register with one of the said presser foot slots, a carrier attached to the said needle bar, and cutters secured to the said carrier and having their cutting edges at different levels, the said cutters being adapted to pass through the said presser foot slots andthe, said cutter havingits cutting edge lowermost being adapted to pass through the said needle plate slot' In testimony whereof we have signed our 'namesto this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
