Patented July 1%, 191 1.
Application filed June 20, 1918. Serial no. 774,929.
To all whom it may concern 'Be it known that I, GILBERT W. G001 RIDGE, a citizen of the United States of America, and residing at Bridgeport, 1n the county of Fairfield and State of Connectiout, have invented a certain new and useful- Chain Attachments,
is a specification. My invention relates to chain attachments and particularly to an attachment forfac1l1- Improvement in tating'the adjustment of the length of the pull chains commonly used in connection with the pull switches of electric lamp sockets and the like, the object of my invention being to provide a simple. device of this character which is economically manufac+ tured and eflicient in operation.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of an exemplary embodiment of my invention arranged in a switch chain and partly detached, Fig. 2 is an end view thereof of the attachment alone, drawn to a chain in the chain rail.
larger scale; Fig. 3 is a perspective of the attachment showing a chain end in process of adjustment; Fig. 4 is a. plan of the blank for the attachment shown in Fig. 1.
It is frequently desirable to add to the length of the pull chains of standard make which are attached to sockets as sent out by the manufacturer, since the standard length adopted may not bring the chain end within convenient reach where the socket is installed at a considerable height from the floor. It is often desirable furthermore to shorten the chain, especially for desk lamps where the standard length chain brings the chain end below a point at which it is dethe socket. At present the customary manner of altering the length of the chain necessitates the opening of the socket and the removal of the chain from the switch mechanism and a shorter or longer For the inexperienced this is an inconvenient and even dangerous operation.
The present invention provides an attachment by means of which the chain may be the adjustment of either readily adjusted in length by the inexperi urchaser, as well as by the skilled without opening the socket.
enced electrician,
' The cylindrical body,
' lnthe form shown, the present attachment, I
comprisesa cylindrical body 10 formed of thin spring metal apertur'ed at 11- to receive the end of a chain ball and longitudin'ally slotted at 12 to permit the travel of the usual chain link 13 therethrough to the end bearing aperture 14: of the attachment. 10, is formed from a blank of springsheet metal of substantially rectangular shape with rounding ends, as shown in Fig. 4, the opposite ends of the blank having bays, a, cut out on the axial line and the opposite sides ofv said blank being recessed on the transverse axis whereby when the said sides and ends are rolled to form the completed article, the end bays form .theend apertures, cesses form the central opening 11, and the transverse sides of the blank codperate to form the restricted slot, 12, leading from the end to the central aperture. The aperture 14 of the body 10 is of less diameter than that of the standard chain ball 15 and the rounded end of the cylindrical body 10 the ball 15. In normal condition the slot 12 is practically closed and 2. During the adjustment of the chain end however, the movement of the link 13 through the slot 12 spreads the metal until the link reaches the end perforation 14, whereupon the slot automatically closes through'the spring action of the metal and the ball is thus prevented from accidental escape from the attachment. The entry of the link-into the slot forming the entry aperture 11 with a guideway 16 which leads from the aperture to the slot 12.
,Various modifications of this attachment will readily suggest themselves and the constructions shown may be regarded merely as exem lary embodiments of my invention.
I c aim as my invention 14., and the side reas shown in Figs. 1
may be facilitated by.
