citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo,I in the county of Erie and State of New York, havey invented new and useful Improvements in ,Drying-Machines, of which .the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a vacuum drier of that type'in which the material to be dried is deposited on the periphery of an internally heated drum which isA arranged ina shell or casing from which the vapors are exhausted to produce a vacuum in the same.
1t is the object of this invention to so construct and mount the drum vand inclosi'ng casing so that they may be separated easily and conveniently to permit of thoroughly cleaning the working' surfaces of the drum and casing and renderinff the same perfectly vsanitary so that the product thereof `is pure and wholesome. y

1 represents the bed or base of the machine which may be of any suitable construction to support the working' parts ofr 4 the machine but which preferably has an elevated front partlQ and a depressed rear part Between the elevated and depressed parts of the base the same is provided with a standard 4 the upper part of which is constructed to form the rear lixed head 5 of the casing or shell forming the vacuum or drying chamber 6 and this standard is also provided with a horizontal rearbearin'g' 7 which is arranged axially' relatively to the rear head of the casing. The body 8 of the shell is detachably secured at its rear end to the rear head by bolts 9 or otherwise and -providcdat its front end with an integral head 10 containing a horizontal front bearingll which is arranged horizontally in line with the rear bearing T. The upper part of the body of the casing is of snbstantially scmi-r'ylindrical forni while the lower part thereof is cinistructed to form a catch basin l2 and an outlet passage 1S which are arranged lengthwise side by side. lfhe body Specification of Letters Patent.

By this means the body and front head of the casing when free may be easily moved-toward and from the rear head.D l/Vhile the machine is in use sol the rear end of the movable part of the. casing is secured to the rear head4 by the bolts 9 and at this time the front part is also securely held against displacement by a front fastening device which preferably comprises a clamping bolt 15 which is pivoted at its lower end to the elevated part of the base so as to swing vertically whilegt-he screw nut 16 at its upperend bears'againt a bifurcated lug 17 on the lower front 'part of the movable sectionof said casing. tightening the nut 16 the supporting wheels 131 are drawn firmly against the trac-ks 14 and thel casing is held reliably in place while upon detaching,` the bolt 15 from the casing the movable part of the latter is free to be shifted horizontally relatively to the fixed part thereof.
A partial vacuum is created within the chamber of the casing by means of an exhausting device of any suitable construction which is connected with a vapor outlet 1S formed preferably in the upper part of the fixed rear head of the casing.

while its front head 22 is provided with a trunnion 23 which is journaled in the front bearing'll of the casing, the last mentioned bearing being closed at its outer endso as to avoid leakagevfrom the outer atmosphere into the vacuum chamber at. this place.
Upon ,somewhat larger than the diameter 'of the steam supply pipe, and a stationary coupling sleeve 26 surrounding-the outer part of the steam pipe and connected at its outer end therewith while its inner lend passes through a stufing box 27 at the outer end of the hollow driving'shaft. The water of condensation is picked up from the interior of the drying drum by 'a scoop 28 secured lengthwise tothe bore thereof, and a curved outlet pipe 29- which conducts the water from the scoop to the inner end of the hollow driving shaft 21, from :which latter the water is withdrawn by the coupling sleeve or tube 26 having an outlet opening 30.
Theliquid or wet material to be dried is presented to the underside of the drum by a pan or tray 31 which holds the liquid so that the' periphery of the drumdips into the .same and picks up a thin film of the liquid.l As the drum rotates this film` of liquid is carried .over the top of the same and is dried during this time .owing tol the heat in the drum and whileE the dried film passes the discharge passage the film is scraped from the, periphery of the drum into the discharge passage b'y a blade or knife 'S2/which is arranged between this passage and the .catch basin, -thereby clearing the drum vpreparatory to receiving another coat of material to be dried.
The. delivery pan is mounted .at its rear end on the rear head of the casing, as shown at 253, but is disconnected from the movable parts oit' the latter. The supply of liquid is carried in the catch t. sin and is delivered from rthe same to the pan by a pump 34l mounted on the depressed rear part of the base and having its inlet connected with the lower part of the catch basin by a pipe 35 containing a coupling or union 36 while its outlet is connected with the rear end of the delivery pan by a pipe 37 containing a coupling or union 38.' Thispump is so operated thatit delivers more liquid'to the pan than the y'drum is capable of picking up whereby the liquid ,iows constantly in the form of a stream. across said pan and the excess liquid overflows from the pan and drops back again into the catch basin ready to beagain pumped into the pan, thereby y keeping' the undried liquid constantly in circulation and agitated so that thc solid matter in the Same remains 1n suspension and sembled with the drum and pan an ideamaV will not precipitate before reaching the drum.
The dried material scraped from the drum into the discharge passage is delivered by the latter into a lreceiver or box 39 which is mounted on the movable part of the casing so as to travel therewith and which is provided with an inlet valve or cover 40 and an outlet valve o r covei` 41. When it is de sired to empty the receiver its inlet valve 4.() is first closed so as to cut the same od from the vacuum chamber "and then thel outlet cwover'41 may be opened for removing the dried materialy from the receiver;
When it is desired to clean the machine the bolts 9 and 15 are disconnected andthe unions 36, 3S are uncoupled. The body and front head of the casing and also the receiver carried by the casing are now moved forwardly on the tracks 14 from the position shown by full lines in Fig. l to the position shown by dotted lines in the same figure, in which last mentioned position` the body of the casing is-entirely separated and clear from the drum. llparts of lthe in- 'terior of the casing, the exterior of the drum, the deliveryA pan and connecting parts are easily and conveniently accessible so that they may be thoroughly cleaned, inspected and repaired or adjusted. This is particularly desirable when drying. materials which are liable to ferment or become sour or putrid if not taken care of such as milk. After cleaning, adjusting and repairing the casing may be again quickly and easiv asthe connections betweenthe pump and the pan and catch basin restored for resuming 'the normal. operation of the machine.
I claim as my invention: l. A drying machine comprising a drying drum adapted to receive the material to be dried on its outer surface, and a casing dried cn its outer'surface, and a casing inclosing said drum, said casing having a body which is movable lengthwise of the drum for rendering the interior of the machine accessible.

A; drying machine comprising a drying drum adapted to'receive the material to y be dried on its outer surface, and a casing inclosing said drum and comprising a jraedy head, a movable bddy detachably connected a standard rising from the base and provided With avxed bearing and With a fixed head, a longitudinally movable tubular body l detachably secured at one end to said fixed head and provided at its other end with a movable head, said body and heads forming an inclosing casing, and a drum rotatable in said casing and adapted to receive the material to be dried on its periphery.

A. drying machine comprising a base, a standard rising from the base and provided with a fixed bearing and with a fixed head, a longitudinally movable tubular body detachably secured at one end to said fixed head and provided at its other end with a movable head, said body and heads forming an inclosing casing, a drum rotatable in said casing and adapted to receive the material to be dried on its periphery and providedwith a shaft ournaled in said bearing.

A drying machine comprising a base, a standard rising .from the base and provided With a fixed bearing and With a fixed head, acylindrical body detachably secured at one end to `said fixed head and provided at its other end with a movable head hav. ing a movable bearing, said body and heads forming an inclosing casing, and a rotatable drum. arranged in saidcasmg and provided at one end with a shaft journaled in'said fixed bearing and at its other end With a trunnion journaled in said movable bearing.

A drying machine comprising a base, a standard rising from the base and pro vided with a fixed bearingand with a fixed head, a longitudinally movable tubular body detachably secured at one end to said fixed head and provided at its other end Withva movable head, said body and heads forming an inlosing casing, a drum rotatable in said casing and adapted toreceive the material to be dried lon its periphery, atrack arranged on said base, and Wheels arranged on .said movable part of the casing and runn ning on said track.
9. A drying machine comprising a base, a standard rising from the base and provided with a fixed bearing and with a fixed head,

10. A drying machine comprising a base,
a standard rising from the base and provided With a fixed bearing and with a fixed head, a cylindrical bod detachably secured at one end to said fixe head and provided at its 'other end With a movable head, said body and heads forming an inclosing casing, a drum rotatable in sald casing, a track ar ranged on said base, v vheels arranged on said movable part of' the casing and running on said track and means for clamping said movable part of the casing on said base comprising a bolt pivoted on said base and having its nut engaging with a shoulder on said movable part of the casing.

A drying machine comprising a base, a standard rising from the base and provided With a-xed bearing and With a fixed head, a longitudinally movable tubular body detachably secured at one end to said fixedv head and provided at its other end with a movable head, and at its side with a discharge passage, said body and heads forming an inclosing casing and adapted to receive the material to be dried on its periphA ery, a drum rotatable in said casing and a receiver connected with the movable part of said casing and communicating with said passage.
