FAS'TENER FORMING Aim DRIVING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 8, 1908. Serial No. 409,812.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. DUNI-IAM, of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastener Forming and Driving Machines, of which the following in a full, clear, and exact specificatiomsuch as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a mechanism for forming and driving fasteners or looks, particularly fasteners for joining two sections of wood to each other. i
It is especially useful in the manufacture of wooden articles requiring two or more sections of wood to be joined'together, for
- example, in the construction o-fboxes, packing cases, picture frames, etc.
It further relates especially to the construction of fasteners or locksfrom sections of sheet metal, which are automatically severed into the necessary length and simultaneously crimped at the ends so that the crimped or corrugated ends will, securely hold in the wood or other material into. which the fasteners are driven.
In its general organization, the apparatus embodies a plunger head which is periodically operated, manually or otherwise as desired, and which, by a peculiar gearing,im-
arts the necessary motion toa prime mover shaft which actuates successively devices for feeding the stock, preferably from a roll of metallic ribbon, a set of dies for corrugating the stock; a knife for cutting off thestock to the desired length; a plunger which drives the fastener or look thus formed and which is attached to, and moves with, the plunger head; and a set of holder jaws which receive the fastener as it is formed and hold it during the driving operation.
The apparatus may be constructed of any number of units, to form and drive one or more fasteners simultaneously. As here illustrated, it is shown with two units, although of course his may be varied indefinitely.
My invention involves various other fea tures of importance, all of which will be fully set forth hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate, as an example, one manner of practically embodying the principles of my invention, in which drawmgs,
Figure 1 is a'front elevation of the .machine with parts broken away; Fig. 2 is a 1 plan view from below the plunger head show- }ing particularly the stock rolls, the feeder devices and the prime mover side elevation of guide-wayin section; Fig. & is a fragmen- ,trating the feeder and the dies for corrugatging the stock; Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5+5 of'Fig. 3, particularly illusby which the fastener is 6 is a sectional plan on 5; Fig. 7 is a detail of the and the plunger ,driven home; Fig. the line 6-6 of Fig. Erace cam which operates iratchet motion by whichthe prime mover lshaft is driven from the plunger head; Fig. 9 .is a section of the same view illustrating the manner of driving the :fastener to join together two sections of detail section of the fastener, showing pariticularly the sharpened edge thereof.
The machine in practice is provided with a suitable base, which supports two columns 15. The base is not shown in the drawings.
a guide-way 19 and in the guide-way are ad toward and from each other so that they may be suited to the position of the fastener forming and holding devices and, moving with the plunger head, serve to drive home the fasteners after they are formed, all of which will be fully set forth hereinafter. 'justably mounted blocks 20, which carry the plungers 21. These plungers are adjustable hanging arm 18 of the plunger head is a rack 22. This'rack meshes with a pinion 23 loose o'n'the prime mover shaft 24, as shown best-in Figs.- 8 and 9. F astened to the pinv keyed to the prime mover shaft 24. The
' until "the plungers I is'i mparted to the shaft is mounted to rotate in boxes 28 secured to a frame 29 which projects horizon tally from the stanchions 15, and the arrangement of the pawls 26 and shouldered collar 2'1. issuchthat on thedownward motion of the plunger head, thepawls will run idly over the shouldered collar and upon theupward motion, the pawls move toward the shoulders on the collar, but do not contact therewith and drive the collar and shaft 2l clear the fastener forming-devices, atwhich time the pawls strike the shoulders on the collar and the collarand shaft 24 take up the rotationof the. pinion/23 and-disk 25, so that .inotion riine mover shaft, from which motion the astener' forming devices are operated. In this connection it will be seen that the shouldered collar27 is in the nature-of a ratchet, the ratchet having, however, two teeth and the parts being so dis posed that a suflicicnt lost motion occurs to allow the. plungers to clear the fastener forming devices on the uoward motion of the plunger head-before t e fastener forminodevices are set in operation, Secured to reachrod rotate with the prime mover shaft 24 is a race cam 30, inwhich operates the pin 31 (see .Fig. 7) of a yoke 32 secured to or formed integral with'a reach-rod 33. The
projects horizontally rearward (see Fig.12). andis joined to a cross-head bar 34. .This bar operates the feeder de vices.
The mechanism shown in the drawings is [adapted for forming two fastenerssimultaneously, and hence there are two feeder devices. Obviously, however, the cross-head bar could be extended .indefinitely and caused to operate any number of feeder devices, accor-din to the number of fasteners which the mac ine is'adapted to drive, in which case the mechanism is simply duplicated for each fastener. c t
, According to the structure shown in the drawings, each'end of the bar 34- carries a collar 35, and these collars have arms 36 projecting therefrom and pivoted to the feed dogs 37. These dogs are arranged in pairs and are themselves pivoted on a car'- rier' block 88, which is adapted to slide horizontally'in a guide 39 projecting from the frame 29. The stock is carried on reels 40, which are in number one for each fastener that the machine is adapted to form. The
stock in the form of steel ribbons wound jspirit' of my invention.
in a roll on the reels 40, and the feed dogs 37 work at opposite sides ofthe stock,pinohing the stock'between their points and feeding it forward with each forward motion of As the cross-head bar moves backward, it will be seen that the feed dogs will be turned on their pivots to move away from the stock and then the carrier block 38 will move backward in the slide-way 39. verse motionof the cross-head bar 34, how- .ever, the feed dogs will be returned to their rengagement with the stock, and then they ,3 will move forward with the carrier. block 38, the stock being gripped between the feed 5f dogs and being drawn forward by the same. jThe stock being V passed into the devices for stamping or core irugating'and cutting the fastener. As will 'jplicated for each fastener which the ma- ,fchine is adapted to form, In aduplex machine such as shown in the drawings, there Zing or die devices, and to avoid confusion. jonly' one willbeI specifically described, the
gother. I r i p As shown best in Fig. 4, the jaws of the die are two in number and are designated ;41 and 41", of which'the jaw 41 is stations gary, and 41 is themovable member. The istationary member is adjustably held in a part of the frame29 by'means of set screws 42, and the movable member 41 is adapted ito slide: in said frame toward and from the fstationary member. iblade for cutting ofi the stock, and this .fworks in the frame 29'against a ledger blade 544. These blades are placed immediately gahead of the jaws 41 and 41, so thatas the istock is fed by the dogs 37, it is projected gbetween and is corrugated by the jaws of the fdie, (the shear blade being withdrawn as gshown in Fig. 4) and immediately thereafter ithe shear blade advances, strokes over the tledger blade, and severs the stock into the gdesired length, as Fig. 4 illustrates. Itwill be apparent, however, that this order of first be reversed, without departing from the The movable member 41 of the die is actuated by a leverc45 isuitably fulcrumed on the frame at 45 and is driven by the cam 46 secured to the shaft i24, while the shear blade 43 is driven through alever 47, fulcrumed as at 47, and is actuated by a shaft 24, said lever 45 and die member 41" iand said lever 47 and shear blade 43 being returned to their normal or inoperative positions by the cams 48 and 48 respectively, although it is obvious that these return 'movements may be effected by means of the'cross-head bar 34 and its connections.
tbereadily understood, these devices are du;
iare two duplicate sets of cutting andstamp gcorruga'ting and then severing the stock may cam 48 on the prime mover Upon re gdescrlption ofone applying equally tothe V In this manner the stock is fed, and severed into lengths by a successive operations;
Referring now to Fig. 5, which shows suitable dies in vertical-sections, it will be seen that above these dies is a guide-way 49, forming part of the frame 29, and through this guide-way the before described plungers 21 are adapted to operate. Below the dies 41 and 41 are arranged the holder jaws 50 and 51, of which the jaw 50 is stationary and the jaw 51 is movable and held yieldingly in active position by means of the spring 52, the tension of which may be adjusted by the set screw 53. As shown in Fig. 6, the movable holder jaw 51 is suitably mounted in the frame 29 and guided by rods 54 although this is a detail of construction which is in no sense material. Below these holder jaws 50 and 51 is a work table 55. This is supported on the column 15 and may be adjusted by means of set screws 56 to adapt it to the position of the work. The work is indicated in Fig. 5 by the broken lines 57 WVhen the fastener is formed by the devices shown in Fig. 4, the plunger head should thereupon descend, either automatically in the event that the machine is of an automatic character, or by hand or foot power, in the event that the machine is adapted to be manuallyfdriven. Upon the descent of the plunger head, the plunger or plungers 21 move through the guide or guides 49, pass between the dies 41 and 41, engage the fastener and drive the same downwardpasses between the spring holder jaws 50 and 51, which yield to allow the motion of the fastener but which, nevertheless, press against the same with s'uflicient firmness to hold it true during the driving operation. The continuing motion of the plunger or plungers carries the fastener through the holder jaws 50 and 51, the jaw 51 yielding springs. corrugated series of rapidly to allow the plunger also to pass between the holder jaws and thereupon the fastener is driven into the work, which is indicated at 57 in Fig. 5.
Fig. 10 shows an example of the work, whichis theresupposed to consist of two sections of wood to be united by the fastener driven into them. Obviously the machine may operate on a great many different kinds of work, that illustrated in the figure being offered merely as an example.
The organized operation of the machine may therefore be traced as follows: The stock having been placed upon the reels 40 and the ends of the stock projected between the feed dogs 37 and the table 55 adjusted to the nature of the work which is placed thereon, upon the first downward motion of the plunger head-assuming no previous operation of the machinethe plungers will descend idly, and upon the return of the At this time the fastener plunger head, brought about by a spring or otherwise, the shaft 24 picks up the rotation of the pinion 23 through the medium ofthe pawl and ratchet devices heretofore described, and the first result of this motion is a backward motion of the feeding dogs, which is immediately followed by a forward motion of the feeding dogs, with the stock firmly held thereby, resulting in projecting the ends of the stock between the shear and ledger blades 43 and 44 and between the die jaws 41 and 41, whereupon the movable jaw 41 advances against the stationary jaw 41, corrugating the stock and immediately thereafter the shear blade strokes over the ledger blade, severing the stock as shown in I Fig. 4 and completing the fastener. 1 time the operation of the mechanism brought about by the upward motion of the plunger At this head ceases and the fasteners thus formed are ready to be driven home. The operator then brings about a descent of the plunger head, which drives the plungers first through the guides 49 thence between the dies 41 and 41, which by this time will have returned to their open position, the
plungers then engaging the fasteners and forcing them downward through the jaws 50 and 51 into the work. This completes a single operation of the mechanism, and the plunger head, with its plungers, thereupon returns to its elevated position, resulting inthe formation of a second fastener as above described.
