To all whom t may concern,
Be it known that l., ALnxaNnnn W. FIN- nwson, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have vinvented certain new and useful improveinentsl in lleaters; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the. invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this sl'iecication. l
This invention relates to heaters, especially designed for heating dwellings, and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out particularly in the claims. y
The object of the invention is, to provide a heater of the character described of siniple, compact and comparativelyinexpensive construction, wherein, in a hot water heater, directed over the lire before again entering the circulatory pipes, and wherein, in a steam generator, a circulation or' water between the upper water head and the hollow base is maintained.
The invention contei'nplates an arrangement for asseinbliiig the heating pipes in independent units, so disposed and having sucliconnection with the structure as to enable the removal of any section without disturbing the other sections oit the heater.
The above object is attained by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is a 'fragmentary viewr partly in vertical section of a heater embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section as on line QQ- of Fig. 1. Fig. 3y is an enlarged --fragmentary view in section, showing the manner of making the connection between the heads of one of the heating units through the medium of tapered connecting pipes which are drawn into 'beveled apertures in said heads by hollow tie-bolts, through which the hot gases 'romlthe conibustion chamber circulate. Fig. l is a fragmentary view in horizontal section through the base. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through the heater in a plane substantially at rightangles to Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is an enlarged `transverse section through the pipes of one of the heating units as on line G-G of Fig. Fig. 7 is a plan view oi' a hollow cast receptacle affording therein a, chamber :tor the separation oft the steam and water when the device is used as a steam heater. Fig. 8 is an enlarged fragmentary view of one or the heating units. Fig. 9 is an inverted .nlan of a hollow casting forming within. it a chamber which serves asa steam dome and through which is a central aperture for the passage ot the flue gases.`
Referring to the drawings by the characters of reference marked thereon, 1 desiglnates a quadrangular base cast hollow in two sections, said sections being connected through the medium of tapered nipples 2,
which are drawn into beveled apertures in the connected ends of said sections by means of transverse tie-bolts 3, which pass through the hollow sections of ythe base and through said' nipples, receiving on their ends the binding nuts 4i, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4l. lVithin the hollow base is fitted the grate, not shown, which, in conjunction with the surrounding walls yof the base, forms the rire-pot of the heater'.
Projecting vertically from two sides oit the base are the pipes 5 which have long threads (S upon their lower ends (see Fig. that screw through tapped apertures in said base. The upper end of each of the pipes 5 is threaded to screw intoa tapped apertlue in the bottoni of the lower head 8 oi each of the heating units, the long threads (5 on the lower ends of said pipes 5 enabling them to be screwed from the base into said heads without disconnecting them from the base. The heating units comprise the hollow lower head S, the hollow upper head 9 and the vertical pipes 10 extending between and connecting said heads. rlhese pipes 10, as will be seen by referring toFig. 3, are provided with tapered ends 11, which tlinto beveled apertures in the walls of said heads and into which they are drawn to effect a'tight joint by means of hollow connecting rods 12, which. pass through said heads and through said pipes, receiving on their projecting ends the nuts 13, which screw thereonto and bear .against copper' washersv 14C lying upon the culating passage for'the hot gases through' the yhollow connecting rods l2, thereby materially adding to the heating surface of the heater. Extending' centrally from each of the upper vheads 9 is'aconnecting pipe 15 which communicates with the receptacle 1G through the bottom thereof,y and which is provided with tapered ends that are drawn into bereled apertures in said connected parts by a hollowv connecting rod 17, which passes through the head 9, the pipe l5 and through the hollowreceptaclel and receives upon each of its threaded ends a nut 18, through the medium of which the hollow receptacle and head 9 are drawn together" to effecta tightjoint betweenthem and the tapered ends of the pipe 15. c
kThe hollow connecting rods 17 afford a passage for the pro-ducts of combustion through the upper heads 9, the pipes l5 and the hollow receptacle 16,'said gases .impinging upon the under side of the hollow steam dome 19, which is disposed above the hollow member 16. v
It will now be apparent that the heating sections comprise the lower and upper heads 8 and 9 connected by the vertical pipes 10, and that each section or unit is connected vwith. the hollow base through a. pipe 5, and
with the receptacle affording the separating chamber through a. pipe 15.
By this arrangement, the sections ory units are made independent of one another, enabling each heating unit to be disconnected and removed from the heater without disturbing the other sections or units. It will also be apparent from the arrangement shown and described that an extensive heating' surface is afforded by reasonof the exterior surface of the hollow heads and connectingpipes, and by the interior surfaces afforded by the hollow connecting rods 12 and 17.
To connect the steam dome 19 with the hollow member 16 atfordingthe separating chamber, there are `employed `a number of pipes 20 having tapered ends which are drawn into beveled apertures in the parts 16and 19 by means of the vertical tie-bolts 21, which pass through said chamber and dome and 'throng said pipes, receiving on their upper ends the nuts 22; Through the pipes'QO, the steam which separates from the water withinthe separating chamber passes into the steam dome 19. Through theing system connect with the hollow base asV shown at 26 in Fig. 2. Y l/Vherethe apparatus is used as a steam generator, a connection between the separating chamberl and the hollow base is ef-` fected by means of the vertical pipes 27 whose upper and lower ends are connected respectively with the separating chamber and the base through the medium of the tapered nipples 2S, as shown.y in Fig. 1, and the tie-bolts29 which pass through the elbows 30 of said pipes, through the nipples 28 and through the walls of the base and 0f the separating chamber, said bolts receiving on their ends the nuts 31.
The hollow casting 16 which affords the separating chamber is provided at opposite margins with the hollowprojcctions 32, as l'shown in Fig. 7. lt is through the wallof one of these hollow projections thatv` the bolts 29 pass to connect the upper-ends of l the pipes 27 with the separating chamber, as
l shown at the top of Fig. L1.
Wherethe apparatus is used as a hot water heater, the pipes 27 are dispensed with and the whole system is tilled'with water, as will be well understood.
To increase the heating area through thek separating chamber 16, openings 33 are loo formed therethrough (see Fig. 7) that allow the passage of the products of combustion.
' To distribute the products of combustion against the under side of the steam dome 19, baffle plates 34 are disposed betweenthe lower and upper faces respectively of the separating 'Chamberland the steam dome, which cause the products of combustion passing upwardly through the' openingsv 35 between the projections 32,01I the hollow member 16 to pass around the ends of the A baille pipe 24. y

In a heater, the combination of a hollow base, a receptacle above the base, heating units interposed between the base and receptacle, each unit Comprising upper and lower heads, pipe sections having tapered ends seated in beveled apertures in said heads to connect them, and hollow tie bolts passing through said heads and through said connecting pipes, a pipe detaohably oonneeting the upper head of each unit with the upper receptacle, and a pipe detaohably connecting the lower head of each unit with the hollow base.

In a heater, the combination of a hollow base,heating units comprising upper and lower heads connected by pipes, the lower heads of said units being Connected with said base, a hollow member above said heating units, a pipe connecting the upper head of each heating unit with said hollow member, and hollow rods engaging with the upper heads of the heating units and said hollow member passing therethrough and through said Connecting pipes to tie said parts together and afford a passage for the calorie current therethrough.

A heater unit comprising upper and lower hollow heads, a plurality of apertures extending through the walls of said heads, the walls of the apertures of the opposed heads having beveled edges, pipes having tapered ends seated in said beveled edge apertures, hollow tie rods passing through said pipes and heads and having exterior threaded ends, threaded nuts on the ends of said tie rods engaging the outer walls of said heads for drawing said parts together to effect an interior communication between said pipes and heads, and an exterior oominunioation with said heads through said tie rods.
