Application led september 14, 1911. Serial No. 649,245.
'To all whom z'z may concern:
Be it known that l, ALFRED H. WILLE'IIT, acitizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Arch- Brick, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved form ofarch brick for use; in're boxes and particularly where the brick is to be placed between a water tube or other `equivalent support and a side wall. or sheet as is commony with a portion of the bricks used ininost locomotive arches. v
The object;1 otmy invention is the provision of animprovedvconstruction of brick of this ycharacter which will fit securely between the supporting tube or equivalent member and the side sheet, even although the tube may be curved or. bent or irregular in shape and therefore has a relation-to the side sheet which may vary considerably under different conditions of service.
ln order'v'that my invention may be better understood', I will now proceed to describe the same in connection with the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated my improvement in various gures, of which Figure l is a top view of my improvement, Fig. 2 is an inverted or bottom plan view;
yFig. 8 is a side elevation and Fig. 4L an end View, while Fig. 'ilistrates a view in perspective showing my improved brick as ap plied in position between a water tube and a side sheet.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 5, it will be seen that i have thierein indicated a `short piece of bent tubing 6, the curvature f which is exaggerated in order to more clearly illustrate the improvement. Upon this tubing rests the brick 7 in inclined position, leaning at its outer edge against the side sheet S in the manner shown and bearing at the side sheet against the middle point 9 opposite the tube support. |The support is by means of the two projecting corners or lug ends 10 which are arranged at or adjacent the edges of the brick so as to place them as far apart as possible and between the two projecting corners or supporting lugs 10 there is provided a material clearance or cut away portion 11 to accommodate the curvature of the tube or to lowing adapt the brick to rest securely upon its three points of support even under irregular condltions.
Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use,.what claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is the fol- 1'. An arch brick havin at one end adjacent the center of the bric a projecting one point bearing for engaging a side sheet, and having at the other end a corner bearing at each side of the brick for engagingv a tube with the portion intermediate the corner bearings cut away to clear the tube between such bearings. f
2. vAn arch brick having on one side a onepoint support adapted to rest against the side sheet and havingits opposite side re* cessed to provide two spaced points of support adapted to rest upon an arch tubo, so that the tubesupported side is .adaptedto fit tubes of varying curvature?substantialiy as described.
3. An arch brick constructed to be sup-v ported between atube and side sheet and having at one end two points of support adjacent the side edges oi? the brick with a clearance space between whereby the brick is out of contact with the tube between the sido edges of the brick and having atthe other end a single point of support intermediate the side edges for engaging the side sheet.
4. Nn arch brick constructed to be sup-- ported between a tube and side sheetl and having the lower corner of the brick at one end cut away intermediate the side edges tcclear the tube andpermit the brick to engage the tube adjacent the corners of the brick., and having at the other end a singie point of' support intermediate its side edges 'for engaging the side sheet. v
5. A. locomotive furnace arch brick ,haw ing a single-bearing side-sheetengaging 'side and a two-bearing arch-tube-engaging side opposite said single-bearing side, said two bearings being located adjacent the ends of the brick, substantially as described..
in testimonyI whereof I have hereunto signed my name' in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
