WORK-SUPPORT FOB STAPLINGMACIIINES.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, HENRY VEBER and VILLIAM OsrERHonM, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in vWork-Supports for Stapling-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rl'rhis invention relates to improvements in work supports particularly adapted for use in box stapling machines of the type shown and described in the co-pending application of William Osterholm, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an im proved adjustablesupport for positioning the work with respect to the stapling mechanism.
A further object is to provide an improved gage for positioning the work upon the support and for permitting the work to be adjusted on the support with respect to the stapling mechanism to receive two or more staples at dierent points without removing the work from the support.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character which will be simple, durable and cheap in construction and effective and efficient in operation.
To the attainment of these ends and theaccomplishment of other new and useful objects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, illustrating an embodiment of the invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an im proved device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention, showing a portion of the stapling mechanism in dotted lines. The support 11 in this exemplification of the invention is pivotally connected with the support 10 by one extremity as at 15 and is adapted to be moved about its point of pivotal support to raise or lower the outer or free end of the arm with respect to the stapling mechanism 16, a portion of which is shown in dotted lines, so that when the support is raised or lowered, the work which rests upon the free extremity thereof will be moved toward or away from the stapling mechanism. Any suitable means may be provided for thus adjusting the work support. A simple and efficient means comprises a screw 17, which is adapted to pass through an ear or projection 18 on the work support or arm 11, which latter preferably depends from the lower face thereof below the pivot 15. 17 is adapted to rest against the support 10 and the other extremity is provided with an operating handle 19 by means of which latter the screw may be rotated to adjust the same with respect to the ear or projection 18 and thereby cause `the work support to be One extremity of the screw raised or lowered about its point of pivotal support according to the direction of rotation of the screw 17. Suitable stops 2O may be provided respectively on the handle 19 of the screw and the ear or projection 18, whichA are adapted to be brought into engagement to limit the-rotary movement of the screw in one direction to prevent the free extremity of the work support from being lowered below the horizontal position. One extremity 30 ofthe arm is adapted to project intoasuitable. aperture 31 in the member 26 and the other extremity 32 preferablyprojects into the support 10 and connected to this extremity is an operating member 33 to which motion may be imparted in any desired or-suitable manner from the operating mechanism of the stapler. VV ith this improved construction, it will be apparent that by providing the bifurcation 12 in the lower edge of the work supporting arm 11, the work support may be read-l ily adjusted and the operation of thearm 28 will not be interfered with. The extremity of the arm 28 isy preferably connected to the operating mechanism 33 by means of a pin and slot connection to permit the adjustment of the work support.
Mounted upon the work support 11 is a gage 34 which is preferablyv provided with `work support so as to projectrfor somedistance beyond the sides and below the bot'- tom thereof. This gage may be adjusted longitudinally upon the workA support 'and may be held in its adjusted position preferably by means of a screw 36, which passes through a laterally projecting portion 37 secured to the lgage and which preferably rests and moves upon one of the inclined faces, preferably. the face 14 of the work support. A supplemental gagev 38, which is of a size substantially equal to the free extremity of; the work support 11, is provided. with an arm 39 which is of considerable length and is adapted to move in suitablev guides 40 secured to the sideof the work support 11 so that the supplemental Igage 3S may be adjustedl toward or away ifromvthe gage 34 to permit the work to be adjusted withrespect to the stapling mech- Eanism 1G to receive two or more staples without/removing the work from thework support after it has once been placed there- 4on and before the completion of the stapling of the respective corner of the box.`
This supplemental gage 38 may be automatically adjusted in any suitable manner, preferably Aby means. of an elastic member .41, such .as a coil spring Vor the like, one- Iextremity of which is. preferably secured to ajpr'ojection 42-on the arm 39 and the other extremity has engagement with. a fastening device 43 on the projection 37 of the gage 34. The normal tendency of the elasticvmember 41 is to hold the gage 34 and the supplemental 'gagei'38 separated, andk lwhen the parts are assembled in the manner` shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, the normal position of the supplemental gage 38 will be beyond the free extremity of the work supportll, which is below the sta-l plingmechanism 16. The distance between the gages 34, 38, may be-Vvariedto meet the existing requirements and in the present exemplification and illustration of the invention, the supplemental gage 38 is of such a position that'. when a box lis placed upon the work supporty 11 to .staple the upper corner thereof, the supplemental gage will rest against the bottom of the box 44l (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1). When the staple has been insertedv in the uppermost corner of the box and it is desired to insert another staple in same corner at some distance from the first staple, the box 44 will be moved inwardly toward the gage 34 until the upper edge thereof engages the gage 34 when the box will then be in a position to receive the staple. As the box is moved inwardly from theiirst to the second position, the supplementalgage 38 will'also be moved toward the gage 34 and against the tension of the elastic means 41 so that after the second staple has been inserted and the box removed, the supplemental gage 38 will assume its normal position shownin full lines in Fig. 1 through the medium of the elastic member 41. The tension of the elastic member 41 may be adjusted to vary the dist-ance between the gages 34 and 38 in any desired or suitable manner and in the present exemplitication of the invention there is shown a stop 45 which is secured adjacent one of the inclined faces of the work support and within the path of movement of the projection 42 on the arm 39 toward the gage 34. This stop 45 is preferably held in position by means of a block 46, and is preferably provided with a shoulder adapted to enter a groove 47 in the face 14 of the worlr support and a screw or bolt 48 is adapted to pass through the stop and block 46 and engage the bot-tom of the groove 47 to bind the stop in its adjusted position. rllhe groove 47 may be provided with an enlargement 49 adjacent one end by means of which the stop may be readily removed from the groove. Vlith this improved construction it will be apparent that in adjusting the gages, the gage 34 is first adjusted with respect to the free extremity of the work support or the stapling mechanism 16 and after it has been secured in its adjusted position by the screw 36, the gage 3S may be adjusted with respect to the gage 34 by moving the gage 38 toward or from the gage 34 and when the required adjustment has been secured, the stop 45 may be adjusted and secured in position so that the projection 42 will normally rest against the stop under the influence of elasticmember 41.
1n the exemplification of the invention shown in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings, the work support 11 may be bodily adjusted toward and from `the stapling mechanism 16 and to accomplish this end one extremity of the work support is provided with a slot 50 and this extremity is adapted to be inserted between spaced years or projections 51 on the support 10 and a fastening device 52, such as a bolt or the like, which latter is provided with a head 53, is adapted to pass through the ears or projections 51 and the slot 50 and may be held against displacement by means of a nut 54. With this construction it will be apparent that the work support 11 may be bodily adjusted toward or away from the stapler 16, the slot 50 permitting such bodily adjustment. Any suitable means may be provided for accomplishing this purpose, such as a lever 55, which is pivotally` supported intermediate its ends as at 56, preferably upon the support 10. One extremity of this lever is provided with a cam shaped slot 57 into which projects a lateral extension 58 on a member 59 which is sevabout its point of pivotal support, and when so moved, it will be apparent that the cam shaped slot 57 cooperating with the lateral projection 58 on the work support 11 will cause the latter to be raised or lowered according to the direction of movement of the handle 60.
In order that the invention might be fully understood, the details of the foregoing` embodiment have been thus specifically described, but

l. In a machine of lthe character described, the combination of a main support, a laterally projecting work supporting arm adjustably supported at one extremity by the main support, means for adjusting the arm and for holding the arm in any of its adjusted positions, and against movement, a clencher member supported by the arm and movable independently with respect to the arm, positive means also supported by the arm for operating the clencher member, and meansifor operating the last said means.
2. 1n a machine of the character described, the combination of an adjustably supported arm, said arm being provided with work supporting faces arranged at an angle to each other, means for adjusting the arm and holding it in any of its adjusted positionsI and against movement, said arm y being provided with a slot opening through one face and extending longitudinally of the arm, a Clencher member supported by the free end of the arm, an operating lever supported and housed within the slot and having engagement with the clencher member, and means independent of the adjusting means for operating said lever.
3. 1n a machine of the class described, the combination of an arm provided with a work supporting face, a work gage adjustably supported by the arm and projecting laterally beyond the face thereof, means for securing the gage against adjustment, a supplemental gage cooperating with and freely adjustable with respect to the first said gage and longitudinally with respect to the arm, and means tending normally to separate the gages.
4. 1n a machine of ythe character described, the combination of a work support, a gage adjustably supported thereby, means for holding the gage against adjustment, a supplemental gage cooperating with and freely adjustable with respect to the first said gage, elastic means for normally separating the gages, said supplemental gage being arranged to be adjusted by the work against the tension of the said elastic means,
