To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. KOEHLER,
a citizen of the United. States, residing-at Louisville, in the county-of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Print ng- Presses; and I- do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description I of the invention, such as will enable'others skilled in the art to: which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to printing presses, and it relates more particularly to an improved rotary printing press.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved rotary printing press for printing on burlap, and especially on burlap bags for quickly relieving the pressure between the printing roller and the pressure roller.

The printing roller 21 is mounted on a main shaft or printing roller shaft 22, the latter being journaled in bearings 23, which are fixed to the members 15 and 16.
A pressure roller 24 is carried by a shaft 25 which is mounted in bearings 26, said bearings being slidably seated in the recessed walls of the members 15 and 16, and being guidedfor vertical movement between the vertical guide elements 27. The bearing 26 is seated upon a resilient cushion 28, of rubber or the like, said cushion being carried by a flanged lifter plate 29.
Theframe members 15 and '16 are do pressed at 30 for the accommodation of a lifter cam 31 mounted on a lifter shaft 32, said shaft being seated in apertures through the depressed portions 30 of the frame. The top of the pressure roller is normally in the same horizontal plane with the top of the table 20, the rear end of said table extend ing into close proximity to saidpressure roller. In front of the table 20 a feed roller 33 is n ounted on the shaft 34, said shaft being joui'naled in bearings 35, said bearing being adjustably secured to the frame members 15 and 16, as shown at 36, a set screw 37 being provided for the adjustment of the bearing relative to the frame. A feed belt 38 passes around the rollers 24 and 33, and shoulders 39 are provided on the roller 24 for guiding the belt 38. It is obvious that the belt 38 extends approximately throughout the length of the roller 24, or in other words, the. width of the belt 38 is as great or greater than the width of'the bag or other article to' be printed, so that said article will not be dragged over a fixed surface,
which might cause the same to be'i'etarded,
while being fed; and wrinkling or puckering of the article is thereby avoided. The delivery mechanism may be either in the 'form of an attachment, or it may bemade fixed and permanent with the print ing press. In order to'operate the delivery mechanism position thereon, the actuating means for the delivery mechanism must be properly timed with relation to-the time when the printing operation has been completed. It is obvious that, by providing the ratchet 70 with more teeth and adjusting the position of the crank pin 7 0, the degree of rotation is secured on the shaft 22 and coacts there-- with for rotating the printing drum and for raising the feed disks 40, through the medium of the arms 42 and 46, the roller 47 and the cam a9. The gear wheels 86, 87 and 88 constitute a train of gears which coact with another gear wheel 89, secured on the shaft 25, for actuating the pressure roller 24. It will be seen that the ratio of the pitch dianitersof the gears 88, and 89 is approximately" equal to the ratio of the diameters of the printing roller and pressure roller respectively; so that the circumferential speed of the faces ofthe printing plates, on the printing roller, is equal t9 the circumferential speed of the pressure roller. Therefore, when abag or the-like is carried between the printing roller and pressure roller, blurring of the printed matter is avoided.
It may some times occur that a bag will be started into the press, between the feed roller and feed disks, and after the disks have descended upon the bag, it may be discovered that the bag has been improperly placed, or that the ba is wrinkled, or for some other reason it is undesirable for the bag to pass between the printing roller and pressure roller. In such an event, the operator should grasp the rod 41 and lift the disk 40,
so that the bag could be easily withdrawn. This may be quickly and easily accomplished because of the free movement of the arms .1.2 and rollers 47, said rollers not being '11 en gagement with the cams 49, but mei ely in contact therewith. However, it ma occur that a bag or the like has been fed into the machine and has started between the pressure roller and printing roller, whereupon it may be discovered that the bag contains or is connected with something which would be detrimental to the printing roller or pressure roller if allowed to pass therebetween; and in such an event it would be necessary to a increase the space between the rollers 21 and 52a, so that pressure would be relieved and tile detriment thereby avoided. In order to accomplish this result, I have journaled the shaft 25 in the vertically movable bearings 26, and have provided the lifter 31, as described in the foregoing. The shaft 32 extends approximately the entire length of the machine and through both of the depressed -portions 30, and carries one of the cams 31 on each of its ends, so that when one of the lifters or cams 31 is actuated, the other is also actuated through the medium of the shaft These lifter cams are actuated by means of a hand lever 90 and a link 91 positioned at one side of the machine, said link being pivoted at 92 to the cam 31, and at 93 to the lever 90*; a latch 94: and a toothed segment 95 being provided for regulating the adjustment of the lever 90 and the cam 31, and at the opposite side of the machine the link 91 has one of its ends pivoted to the cam 31 at 92 and the other end pivoted at 93- to the swinging link 94; so that the pres sure between the printin roller and the pressure roller may be regtilated or annulled, at the will of the operator. The teeth of the gear wheels 88 and 89 are made relatively long, so that said gear wheels are always in mesh, even when the pressure roller is at its lowest position.
Asa means for securing the type or printing plates on the roller or drum 21, I have provided the same with under-cut peripheral channels 21 and have provided oppositely disposed notches 21 in the sides of the channels 21. I have also provided retaming strips or plates 21 which are provided with flared or downwardly converging lugs which are adapted to be inserted into the notches 21. and thence into the slots 21" between the notches. The sides of the strips 21 are rabhetecl, so as to form overhung flanges. In practice, the printing plates (not shown), are provided with flanges on their opposite edges, which are adapted to extend under the flanges of the strips 21", and the number of retaining strips 21 is approximately in proportion to the number of printing lates secured on the printing roller or drum; one more retaining strip being required than the number of printing plates secured thereby.
. It will be seen that l have provided a' machine of this character which is fully capable of attaining the foregoingobjects, and in a thoroughly practical and eiiicient manner.
I do not limit my invention to the exact details of construction, combination, andar rangement of parts, as illustrated and described, but my invention may only be limited by a reasonable interpretation of the claims.
