Description

W. C SELDEN. VALVE PoR ENGINES.
No. 110,294. Patentedec. 20, 1870.
ithtitr hm tutti @that 'WILLIAM o: SELDEN, on BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AssIeNOn To ADAM GARR, 'on PAfrnesON,` N EWJERSEY.
Leens Patent No. 110,294, amamantar 2o, 1870.11
i The Schedule refegre'd to in these Lettera 'Patent and making part of the sante.
`To all whom `it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILpIAM C. SELDN, of, Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of Newv Yorin-have invented and made an Improvement in Valves for Engines, and the following is declared to be a correct description of the said invention.
This invention is an'improvement upon and modication of the valve Vfor engines, for which Letters Patent were allowed to me, Januar'ylf), 1870'. In my present improvement the parts are made so as to be more" easily constructed and `kept in repair thanin my aforesaid valve. In the drawing- Figure 1 is a vertical section, longitulinaly, of the cylinder;
Figure 2 is a plan of the valves andvalve-sea'ts Figure 3 is an inverted plan of the main valve; Figure P4 is a detached view of the top; and ,Figure 5 is asimilar view of 'the bottom of the sec- .ondary valve; and 4 Figure 6 is a cross section of the same,` at the line x x.
oamd, to act upon the lever f and therod @are substantially .similar'to tlios'e in the aforesaid invention and patent.
The secondary valve n, is operatedxby atoe, l, up-
the pistons 1 and move them and the valve 7n, and, as
the valve m moves, it cutso' the steam that acts in the `cylinders q q', in such a 4manner as'to cushion the" steam, andprevent concussion or. thumping, so that the valve is nearly noiseless. f
l" The vports v2 2, at one end 'oi-the steam-cylinder, and 3 3, at' thejother end of the iiylinder, are of usual 'characterfexcept that at the `'i'falve-seat thereare tivo the faces of the main valve m. ,A
The exhaust port ois adapted to convey away the separate openings at each end, so as to be in line with steam passing from. either of the` ports 2 or' 3, through the ports 4 of the' valve m.
The secondary valve n is beneath or within the valve m, and operates with the, ports 6 and 7, to admit steam to either cylinder g q', the ports 6 and i leading along beneath `the vaveeseat and passing .by the openings 16 and 1T, intothe respective' cylinpiston is moving to the right, the ports 2 being open and steam acting through j? and 17 inthe cylinder` q to hold the pistons p and'valve'm, in the position: showin` As the stroke is finished, the boss @,glever fan( rod yt, change the position of the valve "gn, -s'otha` steam is admitted by the ports 6 and 16 intothe cylinder q, to move the pistons pand'valve m. As thc valve' s moved, the port `7 is closed, and ther opened to the exhaust through 10,11,'13,.and 14 but Aso soon as the valvem moves, theportion 16f slides over and covers'the holes 11 and 1.4,cutting oi the further exhaust, and confining in q sueiep steam tocushiouthe pistonp and prevent eoncusI sion, thus causing the valve to be noisless, or nearh so The .reverse movement-stake place atfthe extre'mi irl-ward movement of the piston and frod,jthe admit 4ting andv cutting olf of th steam being' as before de scribed,
I claim as my invention- The secondary'valve n, and passagefways througl it, substantiallyas described, in combination with the steam-valve'm, pistons p, cylinders 'q q', and stean and exhaust port-s, arranged "-'substantially'as and foi the purposes set forth.
WlVLQSELDEN.
