RAILWAY SIGNAL-TORPEDO.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented July 7, 1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK BUTCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Versailles, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Signal-Torpedoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in railway signal torpedoes, and the object of which is to make a torpedo having a case made from a fiber sheet which is folded around the explosive compound and passing the lead rail attaching strip through open ings in adjacent folded ends of the sheet and cementing the folded ends and the rail-engaging strip to the folded body-portion of the case, whereby an eflicient, durable and cheap fiber torpedo is produced.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a top plan view of my preferred form, shown attached to a railroad rail. Fig. 2 is an inverted perspective view of the completed torpedo. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the case, partially folded, the explosive container and the explosive, the parts being shown in separated relation. Fig. 6 is a-perspective view of a modified form of my improved torpedo, showing it attached to a railroad rail. Fig. 7 is an inverted perspective view of the modified form. Fig. 8 is a sectional view on the line 88 of Fig. 6. Fig. 9 is a sectional view on the line 99 of Fig. 8. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of the blank of the modified form shown in operative positionwith the explosive compound block in position ready to have the case folded around it.
Referring now to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the case of my preferred form is formed from a fiber sheet 1, which is overlapped at its center, as shown at 2, with the ends of the sheet projecting beyond the explosive which is contained within the case or tube 1, thus formed. Preferably the block of the explosive compound 3 is placed within a tubular fiber container 4, and around which the sheet is folded. By reference to Fig. 5 it will be noted that after the edges of the sheet have been overlapped, the edges of the projecting ends 5 are crimped, as shown at 6, to be folded in to form the end 7. The
. I blank sheet has perforations 8, which register when the ends are folded, as shown at 7. Suitable cement 9 is placed on the body of the case and thelead engaging strap 10 is passed through these openings, as shown in Fig. 2, the cement thus serving to unite the overlapping ends 7 and the strap 10 to the body of the case.
The modified form of torpedo is made from a blank, as shown in Fig. 10, in which the blank has the end flaps 11, which are provided with strap receiving openings and also the narrow end flaps 13. The blank also has the side flaps 14. These side flaps 14 are folded in on the explosive block 15, and the narrow end flaps 13 overlapping and extending along the ends of the explosive block 15, the end flaps 11 are then closed over the body of the torpedo and overlapped. The rail-engaging strip 16 is passed through the openings 12, as shown in Fig. 7, and the end flaps 11 are suitably cemented together and preferably the lead strip cemented at 17.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A railway signal torpedo, comprising an explosive compound and a case therefor consisting of a sheet having its sides and ends folded therearound and overlapping each other, the folded ends provided with alined openings having surrounding walls and a rail-engaging strip passing through said openings.
. 2. A railway signal torpedo, comprising an explosive compound, a case therefor consisting of a sheet having its sides and ends folded therearound and overlapping the folded endsof the sheet located outside of the folded sides, the overlapping ends provided with alined openings when folded and having surrounding walls and a rail-engagingstrip passing through said openings.
3. A railway signal torpedo comprising an explosive compound, an inclosing case therefor, consisting of a sheet folded over the compound with overlapping edges, the sides of the ends of the sheet folded inward, said ends of the sheet folded transverse the first-mentioned folds and over the body of the case and cemented thereto and having strip-receiving openings, and a rail-engaging strip passing through said openings.
4. A railway signal torpedo, comprising an explosive compound, an inclosing case therefor consisting ofa sheet folded over the compound with overlapping edges, the
sides of the ends of the sheet folded in-' sides of the ends of the sheet folded ini wardly, said folded ends restin body of the case and cemented t ereto, and a rail-engaging strap interlocking with the folded ends and securing the same together substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
